Q: I have a Linksys router and remote access enabled on my PC. How do I get there. I have a static IP address, but that goes to my router. How do I get on my PC?

Best Answer: Go to Start > Run, type \\computername. This will allow you to access shared files on the other computer. Or, if you're asking how to take control of the other computer…Go to Start > Run, type mstsc, hit enter. Type the name of the computer you want to control, hit enter. Now login to that computer, and you have control of it.

Re:I will get back with my cousin and set up the persistent port forwarding. I will also set him up with a strong password. He is about an hour and a half away, and needs some help with file and printer sharing, and I get tired of trying to talk people through that stuff.;)

how could they do it? sniff my password on port 5900?There are other ways around it without a password. VNC has essentially no security (by design). It's your computer; if you feel safe that's all that matters. I, however, would never recommend anyone running a VNC server wide open to the internet. It's easy enough to run it through a SSH tunnel, then it is plenty secure.
guy – I don't know about routing protocols and such, it's pretty safe to just leave port 3389 open and forwarded on the router. Just be sure you are using robust passwords and if you're extra paranoid only allow unpriveledged users to log on via remote access. You should do that anyway

I was trying to do remote assistance last night with a friend. I have been able to do it with computers that have a WAN IP, no problem. My cousin is behind a router, and we first tried using trigger port forwarding. No joy. Will I have to set up persistent port forwarding on his router (Microsoft 500) for this to work?
I was 0 for 2 last night, another friend, another router. This one I have remote administration on, a netgear mr814.
Will it work with RIP 1 protocol, or should I change it to RIP 2 or RIP 2A?
It is hard to get the folks on the other end to turn off firewalls and such consistently, but I think we had that part right. The error message I got was "Remote Assistance connection could not be established because the remote host name could not be resolved. Please try again."
Since I can remotely connect to my aunt's machine no problem, I do not think I have a problem with my router, a freebsd box with IPFW and 3389 forwarded through to my machine.

Re:You have to forward port 3389 (that's the default port number for WinXP remote access) from your router to the IP address assigned to the PC you want to access.
