Q: I heard that isopropyl rubbing alcohol use for the thermal stuff that came on the floor of my heatsink removal. I will be applying Arctic Silver 5, but before I do I would like to know how much I have to clean the heatsink? I have removed nearly all traces of the heat things, but if I keep at certain angles, I see the outlines of where the thermal pad was. means that there are traces of thermal stuff left and I have to clean?
if not how much tolerance there is for the old thermal stuff left behind?

Maybe he just meant it was odd that I took a picture of AS5 on my processor? If so… I did it for reasons such as this… to show someone who doesn't know how much should be applied. I also photograph all my hardware before installing it so I don't have to pull my PC apart to get serial numbers and model numbers and build numbers and manufacture dates and revision numbers and… you get the point.
thats not a bad idea .. i think i'll use my camera phone for taking a pic of my next proc's steppings

Re:Get some brake cleaner from Autozone that doesn't leave a residue. That's always the best stuff for removing anything that is sticky/oily from metal surfaces.
Re:if you remove the heatsink you'll have to reapply the thermal paste because you may get air bubbles trapped between the heatsink and the cpu core.
Re:also when im applying the arctic silver 5, can i remove the heatsink after it's been on for like 10 minutes? just to see if the ac5 spread enough? or will i then have to reapply the ac5?
Re:It'll never hurt to clean it up some more, if you go over it numerous times and the state of the surface doesn't change visibly then you're probably good.
That's an amateur opinion and what i'd do, may want to get a second opinion.
