[RESOLVED!] Funny / frustrating problem with the home network [hook up] [lan]

Q: I am completely baffled. We have a network at home behind a router. From this router, we have two computers on top of a wired network. With one of the computers, we are off to a win2k box. One gets turned out is a 98 machine. No se. Heres the problem:

for some reason I can machine 98 set to an internal ip of 192.168.1.105 and it will be able to access the Internet. np there. but when I unplug the box and hook win2k box to replace nada. I do not have access to the Linksys router in IE, I cannot find the network for other computers, nothing. the only computer on the network sees itself.

Im sure it isnt a bad ethernet cable and I am sure that isnt the NIC on the win2k box. I lugged the thing down and hooked it up just fine and dandy. Both machines were set to the ip 192.168.1.105. I manually assigned the DNS entries on both well.: confused:

Never Give-Up Again
Re:problem solved! I called linksys tech support and they came through.

the problem was a bad signal from either the cheap cabling or some place else (the cat5 is being wired about 80 feet from the router). so with this cable, i could only get around 10baseT signals. that is why the 98 box worked fine. it had an old NIC in it vs the win2k box with its newer almighty 10/100 NIC. so, the tech support person walked me through configuring the NIC to accept only a 10baseT connection (like santa said) and it worked like a charm.

thanks for the help though guys.:)

Re:soz didnt read that it worked downstairs :(

if it works on one wall jack and not another you would be lead to think it was either the socket or the cabling but you say that a win98 box works on that socket very odd.

does the 98 box still work form the upstairs socket you may have loosed the cable in the wall box when you connected disconnected the cabling.

If the box works fine from downstairs then the only link in the chain left is the cabling. try the 98 box up stairs again and see if it works unless you have done this already of course? :)

when you connect the 2k machine upstairs do you get a link light on the router / switch if you dont then you defianltely have a cable issue or a dead port on the router / switch

ah well theres some more stuff to keep ya tinkering for a while :)

on the 2k box type ipconfig /all at a dos prompt when you have set it to obtain auto what ip address does it pick up up? if it is 169.*.*.* then your not getting an ip address also if you do get a 169 ip then type ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew if it returns the error of DHCP server cannot be found then you have a NIC or TCP stack error try the card out of the working 98 box in the 2k box. looks like this is likely to be the problem espically if you cant get anywhere when you manually configure the ip. also is there a firewall on the 2k box? let us know how you get on

actually you are on to something. i do get some weird 169.x.x.x IP when i do an auto get ip. and i also do get an error trying to release/renew cuz it will say something about a server not being found or what not.

as for the firewall issue…..im just behind a router. there is no software firewall if that is what you are asking.

lemme ask you though….how can it be a NIC problem if the box works downstairs but not upstairs? at any rate, you might be onto something. thanks

Try manually setting the DNS servers of your ISP into the network properties on the W2k box. Then add the IP of your router to the gateway input in the network properties.

hmm, well i already tried this. that is the odd thing. you would think that be it. i have DHCP turned on in the router, but i still assign ips for certain machines in the house (im slowly switching them over to manual IPs though). but at any rate, going to "obtain IP automatically" did nothing for me.

as for what santa suggested, im not sure how you would go about doing that. :P
but at any rate, i cant figure out why it is so difficult to just install win2k on a network vs 98. we have win2k and XP OSes on the network already. so getting 2k should be a breeze.

well….more ideas would be much appreciated.

Re:duplex mismatch?

Check and make sure you are getting the autonegotiated values you are thinking or just force it to 10/100 Full duplex.
