rpm package manager for better Rh8? [rpm manager] [urpmi]

Q: Anyone know of a better package manager for Rh8? Something like or apt-rpm (I do not think it works but Rh8). I am not surprised that RedHat has a decent /wrapper/whatever.yet.

Sure, would I do debian (or better yet gentoo: P) But Im actually pretty happy with my dual-boot Rh8 lappy now. I also do not have the space available for downloading and compiling everything.

RedHat's package manager is a great deal more intuitive and in depth than you are giving it credit for.

I agree – what's the problem with 8.0 package manager? It follows dependencies automatically for all the packages in the distribution. And anything extra you download really shoudn't have more than one or two dependencies to worry about. The package manager UI isn't perfect, but it's definitely usable.

First: I got Apt-rpm installed and working….I love it! thx people!

Anyway, I'll use a DVD-enabled version of Xine, as an example. Not only does the RH8 package manager NOT have xine in it, but there's a million dependencies. there's libdvdcss, libdvdread, libdvdnav, xine-libs, and, of course, xine (Have I left anything out?). Albeit there's no freshrpms package for libdvdnav….yet….all I would have to do with all these is apt-get install xine-dvd (for example…if someone make a dvd-enabled package of xine for apt). Boom, dependencies resolved and installed. With redhat I would otherwise have to find each rpm on my own and install them in the correct order. What a PITA!

Secondly, you can't arbitrarily upgrade your out-of-date packages with up2date unless redhat decides to list them on the RHN.

Yes RH's package manager is great…if you want to install packages that came with the install. One thing I found, however, I could not find wine in RH's package manager which was vexing. Apt took care of that for me rather easily.

Re:You ever tried compiling openoffice from source? (albeit I know gentoo has a binary of it just for that reason) It took over a gig (which I found odd since it's only about 85megs) last I tried (downloaded source, compiled source, installed files = 3+ times normal size).

Guess I'm jst out of touch since my smallest system has a 40GB drive in it… my main system has 160GB, I just dont care about a few hundred meg being wasted.. actually I can waste 10gb and not really notice.

Sure, I'd do debian (or better yet gentoo :P ) But I'm actually quite happy with my RH8 dual-boot lappy right now. Also, I just don't have the diskspace available for the downloading and compiling of everything.

I dont quite get this, if you can handle an install of RH8, you should be able to handle he disk space for compiling things… it doesn't take that much and remember you dont have all that other crap installed that RH puts on there… U can always delete the downloaded sources after compiling. Plus if you lappy is "cpu challenged", gentoo might fell alittle snappier for ya, especially if you were to use fluxbox, waimea, or similar WM.

I personally cant deal with rpm's any more, they only succeed in pissing me off.

Re:yeah, i honestly dont understand why or apt-rpm have not been integrated into redhat yet. makes no sense.

The only thing you need to do with Debian, is make /var a bit bigger than other distro's because that's where your .deb's go, unless of course you delete them as after using them.
I really do recommend looking into Debian.
