Q: I have set up a samba server running Redhat 9.0 which will be part of mixed-mode outside of the ad domain. I would like to know when installing Samba, I need to set up a WINS server, because I do not have now. I know samaba principle as an NT 4 PDC or BDC. So I wonder whether they need wins to correct name resolution.
Best Answer: It's not an "upgrade" or "downgrade." They are simply different editions. Having the server version is not necessary for Samba (or anything else, really). You should be able to install Samba easily from your package manager. The difference between the two is that the Server does not have a GUI by default.
