S3 Metal is the best API for UT? [d3d] [ogl]

Q: I think the quality goes in this order:
S3 Metal, Glide, ,

But . I could not really tell the difference between and . I hear thats better than Glide and , and S3 Metal seems to be even better, but a little slower.

I m not talking about a system, by the way . :)

But anyway, what do you think? Would you agree that the S3 is the best for some games, or that it is worth the performance hit and we all have to buy Geforce 2 Ultra and all our games at 120fps at 1600×1200, although the details are not so beautiful ?

Re:Metal and / using the compressed textures are certainly the best eyecandy, but IMO Glide is still the best for consistant performance. Metal in UT is the only thing that my former Viper2(still have it in another system) is missed for.

Re:for what i know, geforces run equally if not better with the vogel renderer. but the performance freaks could care less i assume :) i only run 1024*768*32 maybe thats where the difference comes from. but everything looks fantastic and runs smooth so far.

Re:I know what you mean, I usually play at a lower resolution and turn off settings when I play first person shooter games 'seriously'.

Playing Unreal at 1600×1200 with all settings looked DAMN good and was still pretty playable with 16 bots.. Averaged around 35fps in Deck16.. I am the usually the only person who has a Radeon at my local lan parties (Rest have Geforces and 3dfx) They all were amazed at the quality :D

Re:I said I will give it a try. But under my definintion, better looking doesn't mean squat to the gameplay and it doesnt improve my frag rates. But I will give you my honest opinion on the new renderer. But as it stands now, Glide vs /(w/o extra renderer), I have to say Glide looks better.

Re:Everybody has a different definition for "playable", agree? My playable for UT would be in the 70-80fps range, I use 1024×768x16 with medium to high detail. When Im blasting people its not time to look for those pretty lamps and detail floors and stuff like that. And my V5 does a damn good job of what I run, especially with Glide in town. Of course your definition is different from mine and obviously you like the pretty graphics, in that case Radeon or GF2 will better suit you, but under my requirements I highly doubt that a Radeon/GF2 will be as good as the V5.

Re:once i was a UT fanatic and spent lotsa time playing UT DM online. now i am comparing UT running on my radeon 32ddr paired up with duron 8×110 and my roomies v3 2k@190 and pee3 900. my roomate, who has just discovered UT agrees the former looks noticably better and at the same time very playable (altho the 'playable' part wouldnt be too credible would it, coming from a newbie :) ). just a thought.

Re:I'll give it a go, but I doubt these awesome graphix you claim can be obtained with such a minimal loss. And UT is not just OK visual, the game itself looks awesome on its own.

Re:guy, from monitor war(?) days i know you are a very intelligent and scrupulous computer geek :) dont be so uptight and give it a try! i was convinced that glide was the best in the days of loki GL. i didnt check the exact framerate numbers, but i did get a much smoother feel overall, playing online and with 8 bots alike. aint that what matters? you know it is useless to go with 90fps and ok visuals over awesome grafix and 80fps? obviously, these are arbitrarily made up numbers, but you get the point. make sure you install detailed textures off the second CD and ask oldfart or taz about exact settings. oh, and another thing, they are only known to work well with geforce or radeon series of cards, SOL for voodoos and kyros.

DONT say! …till you try the new renderes out. they could be donwloaded from the UT official website. i have seen UT running in glide/V5 in all its glory so i know my radeon looks way better and runs just fine…

Re:guy, try the newer vogel renderer (not the old loki ones, altho they are both by the same programmer). the difference is like day and nite. glide runs smooth and all but its not that pleasing to eyes.

Re:The MeTal drivers work really well when they are used under Win9x. They do not work very well in Win2k. But aside from that, I like getting 100+ FPS at 1024×768x16 on my Duron 650. It is not consistent but It has peaked that high before and sustained it for a noticable time period. The only artifacts that I have noticed it on the Death Match when you are on the big wooden boat. The floor has waves in it like water.

Re:i did play UT with my friends S3 card and it was pretty dang nice, MUCH improvement over v3 3k he used to have. yet i admit my radeon rivals if not surpasses it :)
