Q: Hi, this 160 GB HD will not format during Windows XP setup .
At first I had trouble windows to see, even they, and after fiddling with the 3rd party drivers for a few hours I got it to recognize. But now it just will not format when that step.
What could be wrong? Next Thread

Best Answer: It is ram issue. DDR ram will not be compatible with that board. You NEED DDR2 and I would have suggested DDR2 1066mhz with that processor but the 800mhz will be all good. Be sure and unplug the power cord before uninstalling the old ram and inserting new ones.
Re:If that is the equivalent of setting it to 1.5 instead of 3.0 I already did that.
thanks
Re:If this is a SATA II drive, try using the jumper settings to set it for SATA I operation.
Re:Yes I was able to install the 3rd party drivers…
Windows sees the drive but when I get to the format screen it will not format it just stays stuck at 0%.
I am going to try another sata cable, and see if I can get another HD to test it out as well.
If you have any other suggestions that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Re:Hey guy,
I had this problem too. However, I think that my drive is just bad. After my build, I had this strange "clunk, clunk, clunk" sound. Then it would go "boing" and start over again with the clunking. It was pretty regular. I finally pulled the power plug to the drive (during other troubleshooting, I just pulled the data cable out). Now, I don't hear those sounds. So, if your hear weird noises that you cant quite locate….
Re:Did you use the F6 key, to install the SATA driver during the setup.
