Q: It is better to pull the cable and connect the scanner down every time I finish it, or is it better to run all day.
I will not often use. Anyone has experience with that? It may damage the scanner or shorten the lifespan?

Best Answer: It's safe to leave your computer on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as long as you don't mind the energy consumption and extra wear and tear. Naturally, you want to make sure it stays cool enough, and that you're using the power supply instead of the battery. There are lots of people who rarely turn off their computers (like me).

Re:Most decent ones should have a powersave or "sleep" button. Mine wakes up when I reboot or open the software.

Re:Fluorescent tubes last about 5,000-20,000 hours, and there are over 8700 hours in a year. But as tubes wear they develop dark bands at the ends, and these can affect picture quality. Another factor to consider is that the high voltage power supply that drives the tube can wear out.

Re:I have an old hp scanjet 4p (scsi), used for about 4 years. Have left if on constantly. No problems. As soon as I need it, the lamp just powers up and away we go.

Re:So long as the lamp is turned off, the scanner is effectively turned off. My Umax has a green "ac power detected" LED on the front which is always on if the unit is plugged into the wall outlet. But like guy the lamp itself shuts down automatically after a period of time and that's all you really need to worry about. Still, I unplug my Astra when I know I won't be scanning for a while. I'd hate to burn out that LED.

Re:Most scanners, at least in my experience, shut themselves off during periods of inactivity. I've got a Umax and a friend has a Mustek, and they both power down after about 15 minutes. They fire up when you open up the scanning software.
