Q: I recently upgraded my computer to 2 sticks of 1 GB of RAM and a 3800 + X2 Manchester 939.
Everything socket worked fine until a week later, when my OCZ 520W Power Stream not me. I ordered a OCZ 600W SilentXStream and installed, and everything seemed fine. I started to notice my computer was slow in some applications that should not be slow in. So I opened Task Manager and the max CPU utilization of one of my programs had only 50% 0.
I tried Orthos run but can t due to the fact that the second CPU is not immediate. Can anyone offer some advice in what I could try? Can not a core on a chip costs, and not the entire chip? I must return this chip as we speak? Or is it due to any question of power difference between the OCZ 520W vs. OCZ Power Stream 600W SilentXStream?
Thanks for any ideas.
Best Answer: It all depends on the motherboard. Do you know what model number the motherboard is? How about contacting me? A lot easier to explain.
Not true, Man. Some components like the processor and video card he mentions, will have to start with motherboard.

Re:So are you seeing both cores in the task manager?
Are you seeing anything in your event veiwer under system or application?

Whoa whoa whoa, I doubt anything is wrong with one of your cores. Unless you're testing it with a multithreaded app, the most that will ever register with a single app is 50% usage.
How do you know it's a CPU failure that's keeping Orthos from running, and do you have this thing overclocked?
Orthos ran fine before; it's only after I replaced my PSU and noticed that only 50% CPU strength was being utilized total by my machine.
EDIT: when I run orthos, the torture test begins fine on CPU 0, and then when it's initiating the torture test for CPU 1, orthos immediately aborts.

Re:Well, my main problem right now is I don't know the exact cause of the failure at the moment. My setup right now is overclocked slightly, on stock voltage.
I figured if one of the cores were actually 'destroyed', then the chip would be unusable altogether? I don't know..
When my 520W OCZ failed, it didnt burn out while the computer was on. What actually happened was that I turned my computer off, and then tried to turn it back on after 5 hours or so. The computer would just not turn on, and I eventually figured out my power supply had died.
Since the PSU simply did not provide electricity after being powered down, I didn't think the PSU managed to kill one of the cores in my chip.
Any other thoughts/comments?

From what I understand ORTHOS is a multithreaded program…
But you do bring up a good point as to how you know it's the cpu that's causing the failure.

Re:It's not a common thing to have happen but it seems most likely your PSU destroyed one of your two cores. I don't know what other diagnosis one could give based on what you're telling us. You're going to have to RMA it.
