Q: Wondering if there is a good way to get my laptop safe for use on a public wireless network without using 3rd party firewall software.

If you can use remote desktop it should work well. I dunno if RDP is inherently secure though. Otherwise there's always SSH tunneling.
Meh… Remote Desktop won't really accomplish what I want to do. I want to be able to work on my laptop while using internet resources. Remote Desktop would be more for doing work on my home desktop while I'm at school, which isn't what I want to do. Plus I'll still be connected to the wireless network at the school. I'm not as concerned about how secure the wireless network is in terms of keeping internet traffic out of the network… moreso about other computers on the wireless network.

Do Not use the connection for online banking, and similar private activities.
