Send a good internal ATA controller card? [promise ultra100 tx2] [ultra100 tx2]

Q: I Promise currently checking my hard drives which gives me a lot of problems. It blocks when the CD drives (on the mobos IDE channels) are accessible when the hard disks are very busy. Update the latest drivers cause my system to slow, which probably is Promise hack around the lock-up problems.

Who else makes good ATA cards? RAID is not necessary or even desirable.

Best Answer: If i was you and your power supply can support a 6pin video card i would go with an *800 series and up that be 7800 8800 9800 or 7900 8900 or 9900

Promise UltraTX2 working fine in my PC, booting all of my OSes (Windows x 4, FreeBSD, Linux) without any problems.

Are you sure that the Promise card is the problem? Have you tried the same problematic procedures just using the onboard IDE controller(s)?
I really think it is the Promise card because I had the same problem on my old motherboard and different drives. I really don't know what else it could be.

It works find 99% of the time, but when the hard disks are grinding away (like during Speedisk) and the CD gets accessed the system hard locks.

Re:guy! What's up?

I updated the BIOS to 2.20.0.15 yesterday and hoping that will solve some of the lockup issues. I swapped to to control my optical drives at one point and the performance was horrible. I was getting many buffer underuns when burning at 16x.

I guess I will hold off on getting a new controller and try to iron out the issues with this one.

Re:never had a problem with the promise cards. i have a 100 tx2 in the xp box, no problems. of course i am not booting off of the promise card.
highpoint is a POS. imo.

HEY DWELL SUP DOOD!

Re:nice, didn't know it supports optical drives… :D that is good to have around if you want to add an extra ide device (*dvd burner* )

Re:That's the one I got. There is a BIOS update available guyom siimage and you may as well grab the latest drivers too. This and a 'Cuda IV breathed new life into my mum's PC. I almost made the mistake of getting a Promise card knowing that they did not control CD drives until I stumbled upon this puppy -it's nice to have that option especially in the case of an "ATA16" onboard controller but even for more versatility in the future.

Re:Do you mean this card? I just ordered it, I hope it's good.

ATA card with raid for 20$ (http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=SD-SIL680-RAID)

Re:Welp, this is prolly the third time I have said this but I recently got a Silicon Image guyom compgeeks for less than $20 that works great and also controls CD drives etc, unlike the Promise and HighPoint stuff. It does RAID too but I did not need it for that.

Re:There are some firmware updates for the Promise Ultra controllers… Have you tried them? Promise contorllers might not be the fastest but for me they were always trouble guyee. Don't give up just yet couse it could be something else causing issues…

Yep….I have both a Promise TX100 and TX133. Never had a single problem with either one.

Same here, all I use are Promise cards

Re:I'm using a Promise card with 3 hard drives attached to it. My AGP video card shares the same IRQ. It works perfectly fine.

Re:I have had nothing but problems with the Highpoint stuff in the last three years. Bad drivers, hardrive compatibility problems ect. It sounds like your Promise Ultra controller is having resource issue problems. Have you tried moving it to another pci slot where the Ultra does not share resources with another device ?

Re:I have the Promise Ultra 133 TX2, not just for the speed, but it seems less problematic than earlier cards I've used. I've had this card through about 4 motherboard changes…still working great!

Re:Cool. This one look pretty good. Anyone have any opinions?
