Q: I have a new wireless router that supports 802.11g. It must support WPA. I tend to Linksys routers. What can you advise me? Try to spend under $ 100.
How secure the modified firmware for the routers?
Best Answer: Virgin do their own. Depending what package you have got they supply them free.

Security and other aspects that are mentioned above have nothing to do with Open source Linksys or any other Brands.
Almost all of the Brand names Wireless Hardware that is released into the market in the last year have the security features mentioned above.
In addition most of the features that the hacking provides to the WRT54 can be found by default in other hardware.
The most unique feature of the hacking is the capacity to increase the Wireless signal output. (Provided that it does not Fry your Router).

I have seen in the sveasoft forums that the xmit power setting should really be set no higher than 48-50 to avoid frying your wrt54g/s. And, it does have WPA-TKIP and, even better, WPA-AES.

Re:Thanks for your help. I downloaded the Saturi-4.0 v2.07.1.7sv firmware. I wonder what is a safe Xmit Power setting? I currently have it at the default 28mw setting, but it can go up to 84mw. I have a Linksys WRT54G version 1.1. I don't want to use any fans on my router. Thanks again.

Linksys WRT54G with modded firmware
You need a good adapter as well.
I have a cisco G pci adapter which cost more than a wrt54g. However it has 100 mw at default.
Thanks for the tips. I have a wireless nic built into my dell PDA and laptop. Im just going to be in an apartment so it's not a problem
The big thing is that the WRT54G MUST have WPA. I'm not familiar with this model. Does it have WPA encryption?

As is (No hacking) the Buffalo Wireless hardware is similar in price to "as is" Linksys, and provides more flexible (it is a real WDS), and stable Network.
