Q: Friend is a room to rent, there is no phone in, and the owner does not want him to install a telephone. He tries to figure out how to get DSL. Ive seen the equipment into an outlet into a phone line, but I have my doubts about how well they work or not with DSL. “Im guessing hardly exsistant options, but if any of you have a suggestion, I could pass him, that would be great. If the only difference, he is in the basement, which is not very close to a room with a jack.
Best Answer: i assume you've your DSL modem connected to computer using ethernet cable- then buy a longer ethernet cable so your modem remains near the phone socket and cable goes to your computer. (this would be cheaper than buying the power strip)

here is what i would do. get a wireless AP and connect it to your pc and disable DHCP if it is enabled. Then connect it to your dsl modem. as long as your workstation connects to the ap you should be able to configure your dsl modem with out being connecting directly to it.
ha nah, it's not blazing, but I think it's 768/128k. It's 20 something if you call and order it, for some reason ordering online makes it mucho cheaper.
It's actually 1.5Meg down. Not sure on the up. It's also $14.99/mo but you get $2/mo off if you order online… I only know this because we're trying to get my wife's parents to ditch dial-up and go with this right now.

Re:There is nothing to configure on the DSL Modem itself.
He should get a Wireless Router with a Wireless card, and Configure it his Room. The Wireless part is LAN so you do not need the DSL for the initial configuration.

When the Wireless works locally put the Router on the Modem and continue from there.

Does he need DSL? What about cable? If he doesn't have a cable jack either, then there might be a broadband-over-power service in his area he could look into. DSL is just one broadband solution.
doesn't need DSL, just the cheapest solution around here. $12.99 a month for AT&T as opposed to Charter Cable which is ummm 49 or something sick. Also he has no cable jack, so that's back to square one ![]()

thought about that, but I dunno how he's going to configure the modem/router if he doesn't hook them to his pc to do it. Maybe he could move the PC upstairs long enough to configure them and put it back downstairs.
Or just configure them on the PC downstairs then take them upstairs and plug them into the phone jack.
Honestly though, it should be possible to convince the landlord, just tell him it would increase the value of the house.
