Share files between computers [share files] [new computer]

Q: I recently built a and Im tring to get some information between my old machine and my new transfer. My house is a network and the network functional. My new machine can access the Internet, but can not between it and my old machine. I do not know why. I have tried the machines ping each other, but to no avail. I have sharing folders setup and my old machine can ping and with other computers on the network but not my new one. My old machine has Windows XP, and have the new XP Service Pack 2. Any ideas on what to do?

Best Answer: Firstly all computers need to be on the same workgroup. Right click on My Computer > Properties. Open the Computer Name tab. Click on the Change Button. Decide on a workgroup name – must be the same for all computers. Click Apply.

Right click on any folder you wish to share with others and select sharing and security. Tick the box that says share this folder.

Re:Generally speaking, windows firewall does not need to be touched to allow sharing. Enabling windows sharing and sharing particular directories automatically gives those directories access through the firewall.

It's far more like that he has a different workgroup name, and that doesn't allow him to view the other computers. Or that he's running third party firewall software like zonealarm. We need far more information. What firewalls, what is the network setup, etc etc.

Re:what help do you need? Jack does an excellent job with giving direction. did you have a problem understanding the steps that the sites he linked up are talking about? have you done all of that already?

if you have the premissions correct on the new pc, and old machine (the user account name that is on the new pc, you added to the old pc, given the share's access to either "everyone" or added that user that was on the new pc to it). you permissions are probably good.

you cant ping the new machine though. make sure the new pc's xp sp2 firewall is turned off. control panel->Windows Firewall (if looking in classic view you will see exactly that)->select the "off" then ok it. this should get pinging to work, and seeing the old pc from the new pc when in network places viewing the entire network. another thing you can do in from the start->run type in \\ipAddressOfOldPC to go right to it, you should see the share, and be able to access it. copy over the data to the new pc that way.

are you getting errors in any of the steps? if so, what is the wording? google it, or report it back here.

Re:Successful Sharing involves some general consideration in Network settings, http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html

As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what is allowed to be shared.
