Sil680 Raid + Debian + Dual Boot misery . [gig drives] [intents and purposes]

Q: Hi,

I want to get into linux. Ive decided to debian, because if I go to learn linux I really want to learn. I tried Redhat, but for all purposes windows (gui, how did click, etc.)

Unforunately, I was able to learn some redhat by nuking my windows install centuries ago. I had my Windows XP installed on a koutech controller card (Raid Sil 680 chip set) (0 robberies in February 1940 together) and Linux on a 80 gig connected through regular IDE.

After installing Linux I could not boot into Windows such as Windows was not one of the options on the lilo (grub, maybe?) screen. I posted this problem long ago, but was never able to it.

So bottom line .

2 40 Gig IBM Deathstars solve RAID 0 (Sil 680)
1 120 gig WD HD

I want Windows XP installed on the raid 0. I want debian on the 120 gig, only using about 40 gigs, the rest o the hard drive can be viewed by Windows. I would also like the rest o that HD can be viewed by Linux. Is using Debian. I love apt-get.

Any flames or advice appreciated. Especially the man who always has a “Debian.”. For each message.

Install Debian.
Agreed. :)

Use the FAQ/Doc on booting Linux using the Windows boot manager thingy.
You're talking about this (http://www.{$MySite}/guides/viewfaq.html?i=58). But I think, though I can't find evidence for it right now, that that method only works when Windows and Linux are on the same physical disk. If I'm wrong, then that is definitely the easiest method of getting a dual-boot besides XOSL.

I ll prolly just kill the raid.

Make 1 40 gig a debian drive.
Make 1 40 gig the windows drive.
Parition the hell out of the 120 gig and use for data / programs for both drives.

Correct me if I m wrong, but linux can read and write to NTFS? Are there any performance hits or issues I should be aware of?

Read: Yes
Write: Dunno, but last time I looked into it: no.

Re:Could you be persuaded not to run RAID 0? It's going to be a pretty large PITA if you don't what you're doing.

That being said, the first thing I'd try is to see if XOSL (http://www.ranish.com/part/xosl.htm) will install properly on a stripe set. If it does, that would save a huge amount of frustration over device recognition and boot loader geometry. If that doesn't work, you might be still be able to work up a solution, but it's going to be considerably harder and very easy to screw up if you don't understand the process. The AT FAQ here (http://www.{$MySite}/guides/viewfaq.html?i=138) might be adaptable to your situation.
