Simple networks: * arg = infinite me [software connection] [win98se]

Q: I have a fresh install of with an old network. Do you have drivers on the hard disk installed fine. Principal, NIC, and protocol are all installed what appears to be correct. I can not get a to the router. I get a 169.254.xx address instead of 192.168.1.x as I should. The light on the router and I have sinc port2 lit by the lights on the back of the NIC.

: confused:

Ive again the NIC in the Device Mangler
Ive again the NIC in the network stack
I it again for Client MS networks and TCP / IP-network stack

I static IP / subnet / gateway and it still just does not get connect

I: confused:

Re:Those 3Com cards can be touchy sometimes. Especially when using a cross-over cable between machines, they don't like to operate properly without a link-status pulse on the line, which is normally generated by a switch. In that case, I would set the media type and data rate manually in the driver, and hope for the best.

Re:Good. Hope everything you encounter is as easy as this. :)

I had a similiar problem with a RealTek NIC, or rather the chipset was RealTek. The problem was that includes a corrupt driver for the RealTek chipset and you can not upgrade. Had to resort to an old HP "LEGACY" NIC, had to use HPLANSET to change the settings. Pain in the rear…

The card was a 905-TX revision B. I grabbed another NIC out of another server I have an it happened to be a 905-TX revision A. I installed drivers for the revision B, but threw the revision A in anyway and it worked on first boot. Now I'm running windows updates. :)

Re:Try a different network cable, and plug it into a different router port. I'd still probably swap out the NIC, just to be sure. And try using Everest to get the hardware name of the NIC you're using, to be sure you're really using the right drivers.

Re:Even though the screw's not in it, the card is seated properly, nice and tight. The plug plugs in without the card moving. However, I just screwed it in just in case it's got some sort of weird seating problem. Would that cause anything like this?

Re:3Com 3C905b-TX and it was running in my buddy's box a few days ago. He dropped off a whole load of computer parts here and this was one of them that he was using just a few days before yesterday. However, I haven't tried different PCI slots yet. :) I'll do that and report back.

Re:does the nic work
what kind is it. try a diff pci slot.

Re:I already tried static settings. That's in the OP. Ditching is not an option; it's an old AMD K6. The client can't afford a new PC -or even updated hardware, for that matter. I'm doing this pro-bono.

Re:ditch :)

try staticly assigning the ip address. It is what i did when all else failed
