Q: I have two computers both connected to a router. From “My Network Places,” I click on the link “Create a home network or small office.” I choose the option “This computer connects to the Internet through a or through another computer on my netework.

I run this wizard on both computers. Both computers are also part of the same workgroup “WORKGROUP” 0.

whatsoever, after all, when I click “view workgroup computers” on one of my computers, there is a long pause, followed by this error:

Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permssions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available.

Im the manager of both computers.

Anyone know whats going on?

Thanks,

Best Answer: Hi

Make sure your ethernet adapter is not set up as DHCP client.
And setup the IPs by yourself with both computer on the same network.
pc1 : IP – 192.168.0.1 Subnet Mask – 255.255.255.0
pc2 : IP – 192.168.0.2 Subnet Mask – 255.255.255.0
To do this:
Right click My Network Places – Properties
Right click on your network adapter – Properties
Mark "Internet Protocol or TCP/IP" and click Properties

Good luck!

Re:Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP under advanced settings in TCP/IP properties. I had the same issue until I did this.

Re:It is very nice that are the Administrator. However the computer does not recognize people and their title.

You have to log as an Administrator to the Administrator account, and set the sharing.

Log to this page it has a lot of links to instructions to Windows Network Settings, and Sharing.

Re:anyone else know anything about this?

thanks…

Re:\\myrig\sharename

This doesn't work. "Window cannot find…."

\\IP\share name where IP is the IP of the remote computer. 192.16.x.x etc..

This DOES WORK. However, I have to turn off my firewall (ZoneAlarm Pro) off ore else the connections are blocked. Is there a way to get this working without completely disabling the firewall? What is needed is a way to selectively allow sharing with authorzed compters.

Thanks,

Re:Yeah, you ran the wizard. The only wizard you should use, IMO anyway, is the one that enables file and printer sharing. Which I believe you have to do. Been so long since I've played around with a workgroup network on XP I don't know if that is home only or pro and home. But once F&P is enabled then you don't need any wizards and based on my BBS reading they cause more trouble than they are worth. I know I never use them and I have virtually no problems with windows networking.

Having said that, NEtwork Places is basically a broken tool without DNS and/or WINS to resolve names and always has been. Try using the UNC path instead, either with name or IP.

example:

\\myrig\sharename
or
\\IP\share name where IP is the IP of the remote computer. 192.16.x.x etc..

Or you can just use the remote computer without the share name to see what is shared. so \\myrig where myrig is the remote computer from the run box.

CLick start, then run and type the path and hit enter. what happens. For the record, googling windows xp file sharing tutorial was probably something you should have done first if you haven't.
