SMC 7004BR or DI-704P Print Server or JetDirect or Netport Express? [smc 7004br] [netport express]

Re:The reason the SMC/printer combo is 'hanging' is because the print server on the SMC7004BR is not bi-directional. I have the same SMC barricade router and I have the same problem.

I've been looking at the Netgear FM114P router as a replacement. It has a bi-directional print server port included (which will solve your problem) and it is also WAP to boot!

Netgear does have a "mini print server" the PS 101 (http://www.netgear.com/products/details/PS101.asp?view=hm). The beauty of it is that it connects directly to your printer's parallel connector and then all you have to do is connect (its power cable) and an ethernet cable back to your router. I have an SMC 7004ABR and the laser printer connected to it often hangs when I send a print job to it as well.

I stopped using the print server on the same SMC router, I didn't have hangs, but it's bloody SLOW! I have an Intel Netport/Express Pro100 that's many years old, and it handles three printers faster than the SMC router was able to handle one! :D

Re:My experience with the HP 2591A's has been positive, they have done the trick with every parallel port printer I have thrown at it. I had as many as 5 of them, but now I am down to two. I think the ones imbedded in routers are inherently buggy, and all require a special driver or software to connect to. There is only one IP for the router, the gateway IP. That has to function as the printer IP also.

Re:Bump for the Sunday morning crowd – doesn't anyone run any of these print servers???

Re:Bump back to the first page – maybe someone in the "evening crowd" has an answer / opinion…
