Q: First I give you my setup:
PIII 450
324M RAM
win2k
This computer connect to the Internet, with one NIC and the NIC that has half the internet is to share the second computer:
Celeron II 700
128M RAM
win98 SE
The internet on win98 box it runs perfectly, but on the win2k machine, everything is slow (~ 1.5-3KB / s) according to the guide gives me Opera (IE is slow too) . I can ping a site and the ping times are fine. So I am connected to the internet fine, but my gateway box is really slow access, while the 1998 box running perfectly.
I am using ICS to share net.
What other info you need to diagnose this problem? I thought it was a problem @ end homes, but it seems to me that a problem with my win2k box for some reason.
I have reinstalled TCP / IP, I re-installed the NICs . One thing I noticed with my connection on my win98 box is that the photos of the headliners at AnandTech items not show up .
thanks in advance!

Re:<< I do have the FSB at 177MHZ and the PCI bus at 1/3FSB could that corrupt it on a WD Expert 9.1G? I can set it to 1/4 and underclock the PCI bus >>
Am I reading that right? You're actually at 177Mhz and 1/3? That puts your PCI bus at 58.41Mhz, which is 75% over spec. Hell yes, you can get file corruption from that.
Even dropping the divider back to 1/4, you're still 33% over spec.

Re:Strange… My install of win2k is over a 1.5 years old and it still runs like day one… I am guessing it must be with the settings, or a bad script… it's weird how my new user account doesn't do it though.

Re:in my experience it corrupts from bad OS install, bad IE install (if using ie), bad site (like someplace with some really bad scripting or cookies), or improper settings in IE/Windows (can't help you much with 2k, don't work with it much.)
Also, it could be an ICS thing, although I've never worked with it so I can't be sure.

Re:Hmm… ok, you are not quite finished… It got corrupted again, but I went to my new account and deleted the folders again and it is working again… how can I stop corruption? I do have the FSB at 117MHZ and the PCI bus at 1/3FSB could that corrupt it on a WD Expert 9.1G? I can set it to 1/4 and underclock the PCI bus… the HD is 2 years old.

Under the new username I made, which was given admin priveledges, I was allowed to delete those folders because they weren't being in use anymore…

Re:Hi all,
I couldn't seem to get rid of the ..\temporary internet files folder, but I did creat a new administrative account which created a new folder and it is working now! I can't use the login of administrator to use the internet until I get rid of the directory and have windows re-install it… anyone know how to do that??? I tried running in win2k safemode / command prompt but it still wouldn't let me get rid of the directory…

Re:Muchman,
If you are actually getting throughput but just slow, I'd say it has to do with your routing tables (or your target sites). If you are getting hardware problems, you'd see lots of failed pages, not slow pages.
Re:Thanks guy, that makes sense now… It seems that www.chalktv.com acting slow and the image server going down have just happened at the right time to make this problem very confusing
Re:<< I got the same problems on that as I do on the win98 box (pictures not loading from anandtech). >>
This may not be on your end. AnandTech's image server was down. There's a thread about it over in Forum Issues.

Re:guy – Thanks! I haven't been home all day, but that will be the first thing I will check out when I get home. I think I was fiddling with those files a little while ago and that may be the problem… I will let know know ASAP if it works!
guy – Yeah, I made sure I didn't do that… my intranet NIC just has the IP and SUBNET specified. That's correct right?
thanks for the help… I can't wait to try it out!
Re:One last tip.. Make sure you don't have a default gateway setup in the TCP/IP settings of the inside NIC on your Win2K box. You should ONLY have a default gateway on the outside NIC.

Re:…oops, read too quickly. Thought the 98se was the gateway.
Re:Actually yes…what gave it away to me was the 'typing slowly in the internet browser' line. I think your temp internet files are corrupted. Clearing them may help, but it may also be a corrupted index.dat (which usually causes the slow typing thing). The entire folder may, in fact, be corrupted. Whenever I encounter this I restart in safe mode dos and delete entire folder, then windows rebuilds it, but that of course won't work with 2k…lemme know if this does it for you.
BTW, not sure about the pics not showing up on the second computer…but I'm not sure how ICS handles cookies and such either so it may be the same problem.
Re:It's hard to point the finger at the NIC's because the net has to go through 3 NICS to get to the computer I am using now. It's not working like it was a few days ago, but I just can't do anything on my win2k box… I even tried removing my win2k box and just hooking up my linux box to the net (no LAN)… I got the same problems on that as I do on the win98 box (pictures not loading from anandtech).
Do you have any more ideas??? Could this be a problem with a patch cable from the cable modem to the NIC's?
ok, I guess that site is having problems then… I won't use it anymore to test my connection right now… albeit I can ping it just fine and I get an average ping time of 60ms
Re:and FYI the url www.chalktv.com is very slow loading for me also
Re:try changing the lan cards or looking for another hardware problem?
might be a system issue, not a ICS or network issue
Re:It has been working just fine for over a year and now ICS decides to quit? Besides, the net is working on the shared internet connections but not on my main/gateway box (still is slow, but at least the pages are loading).
Can anyone who sees this let me know if they can access www.chalktv.com please…
That page won't load properly on either computers, but I can only seem to get {$MySite} on the win98 box.
Oh, and another thing I forgot to mention is that when I type a URL into the browser on the win2k box, the characters come with a delay and it seems to have happened at the same time this internet problem.
