Sound In Windows 2000 Professional [vortex 2] [turtle beach]

Q: Hey everybody. I had an extra hard drive sitting around so I decided to install Win2k to the times when stability is essental. an issue. I have a sound card plus Montrego II. I know that TB does not have drivers so I have the drivers from www.windrivers.com refrence. I installed them and there is something strange going on with the system. When I boot into Win2k for the first time in one day, the startup sound is almost done, and then stops abruptly. From that moment I can not hear sound from the system until the next day or until I start in 98SE. I know the sound card and speakers must allow, I also know that there is something wrong with the installation of Windows 2000.
Has experenced anyone else this problem? Does anyone know what I could do to fix it?

The other strange thing that Win2k has done is that I can not see the other people connected to my network. Obviously my network card works because all you can read this, so it must be something else . My network is all dynamically assigned IP addresses from a DHCP server box / cable modem sharing box.
thanks again

Re:I had the same problems. I tried the drivers at www.vortexofsound.com but they didn't work for me. You can hope creative will release win2k drivers since they bought the technology, but I just got tired of waiting and bought one of creative's sound blaster live cards.

Re:I've got my MX300 running fine in Win2K; A3D works fine too.

But my motherboard is an Abit BE6-2 with a BX chipset.

The MX300 has problems with the VIA based boards in Win2K. Generally, people complain that the sound cuts out for them after a while. No known fix exists unless Creative wants to perform an act of charity and release improved drivers for the AU8830 chip (they own the tech now), and that's not likely to happen. They'd rather have you buy a Soundblaster.

See this Link (http://{$MySite}/messageview.cfm?catid=27&threadid=334138&highlight _key=y&keyword1=aureal&keyword2=drivers) for a discussion on installing the latest drivers, and a link to the last beta (59) released.
Here's a link to the 59 Drivers in Russia (http://ftp://file2.mydrivers.com/sound/wdm5_12_01_2559.exe), just in case the link in the Anand thread doesn't work. A google search for "wdm5_12_01_2559.exe" should turn them up on other sites.

Also, if you do a google.com search for "wdm5_10_2500_49.zip" you will be able to find the earlier (49) set of betas that is more complete (35mb file) on a few sites outside the US. Here they are in Russia (http://ftp://ftp.3dnews.ru/pub/www.3dnews.ru/drivers/sound/aureal/WDM5_10_2500_49.zip), for one.

My recommendation is to get the 49 betas, unzip them into a directory, then unzip the 59 betas over them, replacing the older files. I found that the 59 betas were missing the ADM8830.SYS file which was required during the reinstall.

Complete install instructions are at Vortex Of Sound (http://www.vortexofsound.com/drivers/drv_v2wdm.htm)

Good luck.

Re:hey all. thanks for responding. I since got win2k to work on the network, but i still cant get the sound working. does anyone have a copy of the upgrade version of the aureal refrence drivers for win2k? I think that they may be able to help instead of the full driver set.

thanks in advance.

Re:I also had the same problem with my mx300 (diamond) when I installed
Windows 2000 Professional. The sound started up ok, then cut out.
Tried everything. Drivers, switching IRQs, etc.
Apparently win2k doesn't like many soundcards, especially the ones that use
vortex drivers.
I switched back to win98 and everything worked fine.

Let me know if you figure out a way to get the sound working in Win2k
because the os was MUCH more stable (unfort. no sound ;()

Re:The sound problem is probably just a driver problem. Windows 2000 doesn't seem to like soundcards (any, at all).

Try installing one of the networking clients (like "client for microsoft networking"). Windows 2000 did not install them when I installed it at home where we have a similar network. I am not exactly sure what the client/service/whatever is called, but it is on the networking properties page.
