Spontaneous reboot . Help! [boot screen] [dual boot]

Q: Hey everybody. I have a Win2k/98se and can not boot into Win2K. I can boot into 98 with no prob. 2 partitions on the main drive: Win2k (NTFS) and Win98. The second disk is a partition with only data.

I get the startup screen in Win2k and just before the screen asking for ID / pwd reboot the system. The last time I did just before this happened was to install WinDVD and change the option for the standard DVD disc into my DVD drive. I unplugged everything except the vid card, network card and the main hard drive. Can not boot into safe mode or anything.

System. Generic PIII600E
512mb ram
Main hd – hd Maxtor
Second 10GB – 30GB Western Digital
Hercules 4500 64MB KyroII card
Intel BX motherboard

This vid is a Dell system and I would call Dell, but they will not support it because Win2k was installed 98SE.

Best Answer: ya there r possibilities to have a bad capacitor, bad ram, glitched OS, or bad power supply. u have to check each .

Re:Okay, I've decided to agree and reload. I installed a second copy of win2k on my second drive so I could access the ntfs partition that the first install is on. All my data is on the second drive as well so I'm not worried about that.

Question: This is the first time I've used win2k so what settings should I back up from the original install to make it easier when I reload?

Re:If your blue screening in both safe mode and normal, then I don't see that you really have any options unless you have some form of backup. I think your simply going to have to reload. And before you load that WinDVD again, make sure it is a Win2000 progie.

Re:i KNOW THERE IS AN OPTION TO CHECK THIS FEATURE OFF…I am not sure if it is in the bios or in windows iotself…If in the later that obviously poses a major problem for you

May have to do a fresh install and format…See if anyone more knowledgeable on this matter can help you first.

Re:Okay, I just found that it is a blue screen that's making it reboot. Is there anyway to keep it from rebooting on a blue screen without being able to get into the OS?

Re:Have you tried resetting the bios or pulling the cmos battery to go back to defaults?

Do you have option checked that instead of giving BSOD it restarts automatically? This could be telling you there is a hardware conflict or something…Is there on log file that tells you what has happened?

This is all stuff I have had the luxury of never needing to try so sorry if it doesn't sound clear or necessary correct. I think the jist of it is correct.

I've tried booting into 2k with every possible option there is, the damn thing just doesn't want to go for me.

Re:P.S. If you unplug your DVD player or other CDROM device (or both), does it run?

Nope. I unplugged every cd-dvd-harddrive that I didn't need to boot and it didn't help. Is there any way to see an NTFS partition from win98 so I can at least try deleting the software? I had already enabled DMA on the DVD previously so I don't think that did it.

I just installed 2k about a month ago and I'd rather not have to go through it again if possible.

Re:Can't really see how a DVD codec or progy would cause reboots at that screen, but if the progy enable DMA mode for the DVD and it isn't happy running in DMA mode you could see problems.

Hope you find your solution.

P.S. If you unplug your DVD player or other CDROM device (or both), does it run?
