Q: Upgrade from Athlon AthlonXP to C, not sure if the OS (WinXP SP1) is the correct recognition of SSE. Ran latest version of WCPUID and clicked tweaks, SSE Control, it shows my system with SSE detection disabled. By enabling button, the computer immediately crashes.
Surely there a simple way to work this out without a whippin from the old XP “repair” drive?! Im thinking maybe adding some. Dll file to Windows System folder?
Maybe I am far off base. All answers are greatly appreciated.

Re:Doing a repair off the XP CD just replaces some system files on your HDD w/ ones on the CD in case they were missing or courpt, it will not add SSE support if it was not already present. sorry
Re:Thanks!
Will doing a "repair" off of the XP CD do the trick?
Hope so; there shall be no formatting for me.

Re:I am not sure if you have to re-install w/ XP to get SSE(I think you do but not positive), but w/ NT and 2K you are required to reinstall the OS to get SSE to work, SSE and similar instruction sets, eg SSE2, 3dnow!, ect.. all are bulit into certian services that automaticly load when NT/2k/XP load, and unless SSE was supported by the CPU when the OS was installed then despite the fact that the new CPU supports the instruction set, the OS will not make use of it w/out the proper services loading on startup, and to be sure you get SSE support you need to Re-load just to rule out the chance that it may not be supported. Hope this helps…
Re:I really appreciate the advice.
I re-installed XP by uninstalling SP1, then slappin' in the XP CD and doing a "repair" of Windows.
It didn't take it very long to finish. Re-installing XP and then adding SP1 took all of about 20 minutes. My question still remains: Does XP see SSE, or do I have to format my hard-drive, re-install XP and start from scratch? (surely not, as this seems almost ludicrous)
Is there a program that will tell me if XP is detecting SSE? (not WCPUID, Sandra 2002, etc, as they all see my CPU and recognize SSE, but I want to make sure Windows sees it)
Again, any replies to my almost redundant emails are greatly appreciated.
Thanks again,
Matt
Re:I asked this same question a couple of weeks back
Answer was "It will be OK, you don't need to reinstall Windows"
It didn't detect SSE, and when i reinstalled on Sunday it picked it up and everything is much faster (the previous install had almost nothing either, so can compare directly)
It would probably be best to do a reinstall of Windows, to enable SSE and to also just generally speed it all up

Re:Generally, you'd want to do a fresh install of the OS after you add crucial hardware, such as a CPU or motherboard. I wouldn't even consider changing the CPU and not reinstalling Windows.
Just my $.02…
Re:Anyone? I'm really hoping to avoid a reinstall of XP.
