Stick with FreeBSD or enter SuSE 9 [faculty staff members] [budget proposals]

Q: Its that time of year again and I have the for what I need to buy next year to submit. It is a small private school with 400 + students. Please note only about half of them along with 70 faculty / staff use e-mail. Currently we run FreeBSD 4.9 with Postfix and UW IMAP is squirrelmail.

The server is working normally since September so its a long time with no downtime, well, I accidentally system was started again, so I lost my awesome uptime ! Anyways, Ive been playing with Suse 9 on my desktop at home. Very very nice. I used a guy RH, but they put me off since they stopped supporting IT and run it in Fedora. Do not get me wrong, I like Fedora, SuSEs Yast, but it is great.

Anyways, someone has a mail server installed on Suse? I tried to quotas and Courier implement so we do not have a large file for e-mail from each user, but I couldnt figure it out. I think its all about to converse with Suse and hopefully there will be a number of tools that automatically detects and postfix courier.

Of course, if it is not broke dont fix, but I feel like playing with a new toy. We must also upgrade the server, so I figure a new OS would not hurt. FreeBSD is awesome, but I love new toys: D

Best Answer: If you try without cache it may work. For traceroute to work from machines inside the network your routing should be OK. You can set it from RedHat_Configure_Network and should also check that the basic dns caching server is running.

Re:Eh. If it ain't broke don't fix it. But then again, I don't like fixing broke stuff (let alone breaking fixed stuff, or fixing non-broke stuff), and some people do. Search for the answer within. :P

Re:Just since this is sorta along these lines I'd like to point out this article (http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/nnlsmag/features/trenches/tr_linux_with_windows_nls.html)

It's from Novell and it's about using Suse to run windows applications.

for instance this little quote:

Try Codeweaver CrossoverOffice (http://=http://www.codeweavers.com/) as previously mentioned; the current version runs well with IE6, Office 2000, Quicktime, Quicken and a few others.

So if you have some die-hards MS Office fans may otherwise run Linux there is some good ways to find middle ground.

Also check out their other articles from Novell (http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/nnlsmag/collector/articles_bydate.html)

I think they are written in a way and buy big enough big-wig corporation that most PHBs can understand..

edit:

Also just so you know you get a liscence for CrossoverOffice for every retail version of Suse you get.

Re:Debian.

Or at the very least ditch UW-IMAPd and switch to something good like Cyrus-IMAPd or Courier, Debian has packages for both that make installation really simple.

Re:waiting for 5.x to become stable.

I really wanted to "upgrade" the box because as it stands now all mail goes to one file /var/mail/username

I'm trying to setup courier and use "maidir"

Re:Don?t fix it if it aint broken.
Is YAST2 that much better than FreeBSD 5.x to make it worth while for the move?
Is there any hardware or software that you are using or going to use isn?t support by FreeBSD?

Put the time into something more productive instead, because this is your production box. Try setting up your computer at home or a spare box as second email server if you have the urge to have a SUSE box as a server, or want to standardize your backend.

Pretty off topic, sorry, but what client do they use for email at the school?

teachers/students use squirrelmail. those in administration who have their own computers use outlook GRRRR…

they love outlook so we couldnt force them off. I cant tell the president to use something else because she grew fond of it. a lot of ppl love squirrelmail so i cant complain there.

the library needs a few new computers to do basic word processing and searching the library's catalog. I'm happy to announce that we're converting our junkpile consisting of old celerons and pentium IIs to run Suse 9.

You can always keep the FreeBSD server around as a hot/cold spare.

SIGH … We might have to take that server and put Windows IIS on it. Our gradebook's GUI runs off of IIS. :disgust:

LALALA I can't hear you! LALALA

LOL … isolating that thing will be a blessing as we were running low on our budget and had to put IIS on one of our citrix server!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Damn thing kept freezing

Did you say summer? I must have missed it. :P

Then I guess the answer is no, no one will get pissed. :P

:D

I forgot to mention ppl wont be here for the summer. Actually, about 5-6 ppl do work besides us two IT guys, but I'll get the server up and make sure it works and then make the switch while ppl are away on the weekends. No one will never know unless of course I really fvck it up.
