Stop errors in Windows to install [hard boot]

Q: My friend (who knows nothing about computers) were terrible problems with Win98SE imprison every time did something on the computer. So I told him to get WinXP Pro, in which case he did. He took over, so I was able to NTFS format and then install WinXP Pro. Everytime I have the layout phase of the installation I was done around 2% and then I got a “Stop” error. This requires a to restart and you really should start. Me just once that his hard drive bad sectors or anything so we went and got a new hard drive and it was completely format the Maxtor 60 GB 7200 RPM hard drive was, but it was copying files then a Stop error got everything. I do not understand what it could be. I swapped the memory was not. Any ideas? It is an older AMD K6-2 450Mhz with a VIA chipset probly. Im just trying to help my friend, the computer was purchased off of the Home Shopping Network, so you know they know nothing about computers. Let me know if you have some ideas, thanks.

Best Answer: We need to know the exact stop error.

Re:I have had problems with the ram also (got bluescreens though), I have also have had problems with CD roms try a new one or different one!

Re:A couple of things to try.

1) Fdisk and Format the Hard drive with a Windows boot disk instead of XP – Just to see if, during the format, there are any problems… i.e. lockups, bad sectors. Windows XP hides these things :)

2) Make sure that the hard drive is properly setup in BIOS.

3) Open the case, after it's been on for a while, and see if it's really hot inside. (overheating CPU?)

4) You say you tried different memory… was it new memory or did you swap it with old memory? Do you know for sure that the memory you swapped is good and the correct type?

Re:got $$$ on the ram. i've had the problem. friends too. seems that XP install is very hard on memory.
good luck

Re:Microsoft annouced that some versions of their XP was dort of 'defective'. I am not sure were i read it but i don't think there is a fix for it yet.

Humm, link?

Re:Hell yes I stop them..

POWER TO THE WINDOWS INSTALL! STOP THE ERRORS!!

Re:Hya, i had the same problem too. But i would try installing it about 3 times and it would complete it. Even during use, i get alot of 'registery error'. Microsoft annouced that some versions of their XP was dort of 'defective'. I am not sure were i read it but i don't think there is a fix for it yet.

Re:Check the ram. I had a lot of problems I thought were hard drive related and it turned out to be ram. Test the hard drive with the manufacturer's utuility and try memtest 86 for the ram. Available for download here (http://www.mushkin.com/cgi-bin/Mushkin.storefront/3d30b6da14218230273fc0a801020644/Catalog), just click on memory test info. Good luck, of course it could be a lot of other things, too. But this was my most recent fix.
