Q: I use this USR 802.11g USB device. It seems to work great, my computer goes in and out of sleep mode and network connection works fine. I have a strong signal the whole time and never lose connection. But when I play WoW my ping goes to hell and then I get disconnected. I check my connection and says it is trying to obtain an IP from the router to get. I turn the Wi-Fi off, reboot, reboot the router . All it takes sometimes 10 + minutes to get my IP back.
Is there any reason a game would make me turn the router? I can not explain it . I even saw this last night, I was trying to get an IP then I opened Opera with no luck and I immediately had an IP and was connected. Coincidence?
Re:I switched to channel 1 and I had a good 3 hours of WoW without one minute of high ping. Thanks for the idea!
Re:Thanks, I'll give it a try. I also saw this via google:
Now, even more important, go to the computer whose connection is being
lost.. go to your network connections, right-click on the wireless
connection and view its properties. Under the 'authentication' tab, you
should see a check-box option for "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for
this network" – UNCHECK IT!!
Re:well the game is a stream of two way traffic, lots of packets. It's very different than downloading a file.
But generally most wireless weirdness can be attributed to interferrence and changing channels works well.
Re:It's on 11 now, wouldn't a large file being DLed do it too? I DL 300+MB files all the time and never lose connection.
Could it be something with the port settings? I should try another online game like BF2 or something…
Re:The heavier traffic stream of the game makes the interferrance more pronounced and the AP kicks you off for having too many errors.
Change the channel on your AP to 1, 6 or 11.
