Q: Hiya.
Ok. The disk in question is a Plextor PlexWriter (RW) 8×4x32a (IDE) 0.
is recognized as such in Device Manager. It has the most up-to-date, correct drivers CD-Burning COM installed.
The IMAPI service is not disabled.
XP will not recognize the burning capabilites of the station. There is no Recording tab in the Properties window. There is no possibility to send files to the burner on the Send To menu.
Any ideas?
Best Answer: You have a cd rom,It will read but not write.
What you need is a cd burner.

Re:Score one for Bacillus.
I looked into the registry and indeed, the value was set to 3, which means CD RW disabled.
When I originally built this computer, it had a DVD drive in it, not a burner. Later, I switced the DVD to another computer that performed better with DVD movies. That's when I added in the Burner in its stead.
XP immediately detected the drive correctly, and installed the proper drivers. Everything looked fine. Guess it didnt change the registry entry though. It was still set as if the DVD drive was installed.
Thanks to everyone for the help. I was losing sleep over this, usually hardware problems don't give me such a headache!

Re:there is a registry key for CD burning drive types.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives
- All CD drives show up in same key
- "Drive Type" value determines whether the drive is capable of writing and rewriting
01=CD-R Drive
02=CD-RW Drive
03=Write Disabled
change your value to 02 & the rec tab should reappear! ![]()

Re:Ahh yes, the mobo came with one of those, but I used it on my HD, assuming it was necessary to get the full ATA100 spec. I just used an older IDE ribbion on the Burner, which is on the second IDE channle by itself.
I will look in the hardware store for an 80 pin cable. I hope that is what the problem is. I just cannot figure out what else it might be!
Thanks for the help Dave.

Re:The socket is still a 40 pin, on both ends, but the cable is called an "80 pin cable", but it doesn't have 80 pins, just 80 wires, and 40 pins.
Your ASUS board should have come with the new 80 wire cable.
Plus, (and this is very important), the Blue connector MUST plug in the motherboard, with the grey and black connectors for your drives.
I don't know for sure that this is the problem, but I've seen it work for others.

Re:Dave could you elaborate for me please? My motherboard is an Asus P4T-e (i850 chipset). I am using the same IDE ribbon that I used with the drive in an older computer. Are you saying I need to find an 80 pin ribbon? And if so, how will it fit onto my IDE channle that appears to take only 40pin cable?
I'm not much of a cable guy.:)
