Q: A few days ago I upgraded from a MSI K7T266 Pro MSI KT3 Ultra 2 for one-ARU. Everything went smoothly . almost everything. When I try to close it my system shuts down, turns off and then immediately restart. My OS is WinXP Pro and none of my other settings are changed. Interestingly enough, when I click the turn off during POST the system turns off and remains off. The problem only occurs when I try to close and shut down WinXP. I think I have everything set in the BIOS and Windows, but that is not carved in stone. Any advice or suggestions?

Re:Eureka!
After a clean install of WinXP the system shut down the way it us supposed to. When I used the "Settings & File Transfer Wizard" to restore my old settings the problem returned. I used "System Restore" to return to the pre-Wizard settings and the system shuts off normally again.
Fortunately, that's not too radical a solution for me since I partition my hard drive. All my documents, spreadsheets, MP3's, etc. are safe on other partitions. After I reload some programs I'll be good to go.

Re:I gotcha bro (I think) in your bios there is a setting for enable ACPI or something to that effect, you will need to enable this for it to fully shutdown.
/edit re-read your post, this is normally for when computers won't shut off after you say shutdown through windows, you might give it a whirl anyways, but other than that I dunno.

Re:Thanks for the replies. Yes, automatic restart is disabled. And yet, the system still restarts when I shut down from WinXP.
Oddly enough, the wife's system doesn't have this problem, even though I upgraded it as well; we now have virtually the same components. (See "Rigs" in my signature for details.)

Re:Have you two disabled the Automatic Restart?
Right click on 'My Computer'
Select 'Properties'
'Advanced' tab
'Startup and Recovery'
uncheck 'Automaticly Restart'
It will give you some info on what's making it restart.

Re:I have the exact same problem with 2 computers that I have built. Both had the KT266A chipset, although made by different companies. They both had GeForce 2 MX200, but again, made by different companies. Both are running Windows XP Pro and have Crucial PC2100 RAM. No overclock, so that isn't an issue. Everytime I go and try something to fix it, it will shut down fine and then a day later, same old sh*t. Any ideas? We can't be the only people in the world that have had this problem.
