So I first bought a Soyo AWPC3101 who th4e desktop PCI version of their notebook wireless S-Card which works great in my moms old Dell laptop. Its so right advertyised G.

But getting it working in my desktop is a different story. I just coudnt get it to work . what appears to be doing is turning itself on and off every second or so.

This is built on a home computer with XP Home SP2 with an Abit Mobo Raid KR7a Plaomino and a 1700 OCed to 1900 + which runs rock stable. In the Device Manager is listed as IEEE 802.11 wireless adapter. From what I can tell uses a Prism chip, I googled and a guy said that his Linux box recognized it as a prism GT / Prism Duetto.

When I use a Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter WMP54G, I like to see The three networks Soyos “12 or so, and the signal is so weaker.

It not meaningful unless the Soyo is somehow the sight of a bunch of” a “networks that we do not know if there is something wrong with Linksys.

This is driving me crazy now, and I try to make my mind to see if I should return the Linksys (with Soyos gone now too late) and try one.

The third way I guess it shows on and off using either NetStumbler or wireless configuration tool that come with the adapter, its like you see a cycyle networks, and the signal disappears the next, and then back.

You can not connect to one of signals ever 0.

Thanks for your help.

PS (Edit): I tried the card in Soyo two other machines, one Win 98 is running and the other is running Win2k, with similar or worse Im sure I results.

P.PS = the most up to date driver . Soyos website, very little info about this little dealie.

The box is already running XP bro, but I will try locking the bus.

Again, I have tried in two non-OCed machines with the same results, but it's worth a try.

I think I will try this evening on a Win2k box my cousin gave me, a 733 PIII the he upgraded to win2k. The reason why is that WIndows update detected the built-in video and the Ethernet NIC and gave me the option to install the drivers, which worked (well teh nic already worked, but the video was really crappy (only 16 colors available) until I installed this driver.

Maybe Windows update will have something for this card, though it is obscure. however it uses a prism chipset, which is apparently pretty common.
My system seems quite stable until 1.47G (slightly more than that and it will not boot, or will be re-started), but so far 3DMark and UT, both through haflway crash had prior to this they were working fine. This is a decent setup, I think thats the OS for some reason does not work, so I: Do certain OS better in overclocking?

Best Answer: Your motherboard and CPU are socket 939. You really shouldn't bother upgrading the CPU in your situation without upgrading the motherboard as well. The spec. sheet that I'm looking at ( http://www.support.acer.com/acerpanam/de… ) also shows that your motherboard uses DDR, which is pretty slow. You do, however have a PCI-e graphics card, which is good. You won't have to upgrade that (though I suspect that is your bottleneck, and not the CPU).
Here's what I would do first:
Check your capacitors on your motherboard > http://www.badcaps.net
If they all look good, then I would suggest overclocking your CPU slightly. I have my socket 939 Athlon 64 X2 3800+ OCed from 200×10 to 220×10 (2.0 GHz to 2.2 GHz) with 100% stability and no temperature issues.
Run the game in a Window and use the task manager to watch your CPU usage. I wouldn't be so sure that your CPU is the limiting factor in your machine. Actually, it looks pretty balanced overall.

What CPU are you looking at upgrading to?

I would suggest this setup ($240 upgrade using your existing case GPU, PSU, HDDs, etc.):
MotherBoard – MSI 870A-G54 AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…
Processor – AMD Athlon II X4 620 Propus 2.6GHz
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…
RAM – 2 GB single stick DDR3 1333 Cas latency 7 (upgrade with a second stick of *SAME*, later)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…

I would suggest that you upgrade your PSU as well:
PSU – Thermaltake 430 Watt ($40 and free shipping…)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…

That setup would be seriously limited by your video card. Upgraded to 4 GB of RAM and a capable video card, it could play any game out there right now on high settings at a good frame rate…

Edit:
The trick for you if you're intent on keeping the rest of your set up will be in finding a socket 939 processor. newegg, for instance, no longer carries them. I did a quick search and couldn't find anything better than a 3800+… If you have a source lined up and for a decent price, then i don't see any reason not to go for it.
On a bit more looking, I did see a couple of 4600+, but they were priced higher than the entire setup that I mentioned above for just the old obsolete processor…

The Ultimate Starcraft 2 Guide
Re:well, it isn't the heatsink that is loud (it is just a hunk of metal) YOU get to decide the cooling vs. loudness equation because you pick the fan (purchased seperately)

the nice thing is that this Heatsink is so effective, that even a panaflow L1a (which is VERY quiet will keep you pretty cool) It takes quite a fan (like a Delta) at 80mm to get very noisy. for the most part, you don't really need that much fan unless you are shooting for extremes.

I compromised between the two (noise:cooling) extremes with a Sunon 40cfm and am very happy with my temps. and noise levels.

Another factor (obviously) is how well your case is ventilated. I have Antec cases so they stay aired out very nicely and make the job of the HSF just that much easier
(KG7-Raid mobo) The screw mounting worried me because I had not done it before, but if you follow the directions, it is very simple and I love it now (not so worried about giggling my system when I move it.. fall over it… ect. )

edit: note that any HSF with a 7Krpm fan makes a "tone" that will drive you up a tree unless you have the patience of a lamb (or are deaf). That is what
prompted me to get the alpha… 80mm fan is not too loud

Re:then your best choice is probably an ati radeon 9600 pro
you should be able to find them for around $150

Re:I dont want to spend more then 175 if I can help it.

Re:your right, a video card would help more then just increasing to from your current xp1900+

if you want an nvidia card you should check out the brand new 5700ultra (its around $200) and much faster then the 5600ultra… and is the only nvidia card i would even look at right now

if you want ATI you should be looking at anything between the 9600 pro and higher

when you match the ati cards with the comparable nvidia cards (meaning the cards in the same price range) the ati cards dominate the nvidia cards with the exection of the midrange (ie sub $200 cards) there its very close between the 5700ultra and the 9600xt

check the review on the anandtech main page

Re:maybe a 5600 ultra would show more of an improvement then adding a faster cpu?

Re:i have an xp1800+ @ 1900+ now
i dont know if a 2600+ will be much of a difference with my geforce TI200 and 512 meg o'ram

Re:but your board should work fine with an xp2600+ (266) if you can find one
most of the xp2600+ cpu's are the 333fsb chips, but the 266fsb chips can be found

Re:actually that board supports both 200mhz fsb and 266mhz fsb

but no it doesnt support the 333mhz fsb and it probably wont be able to run at that speed even if overclocked

im 90% sure that board doesnt have a 1/5th pci divider so if you did manage to overclock the fsb to 166mhz (333mhz ddr) your pci and agp bus would be way out of spec and could kill pci/agp devices, not to mention lack of stability

also im pretty sure it doesnt even support the barton voltage requirements (meaning even if you were willing to run the barton underclocked on a 133mhz fsb it still might not work)
