Re:On a LAN with only one or two users, you probably won't see any difference in performance for HUBs or Switches. OTOH, if you have a loaded network, there's a large difference, especially if it's a peer network with no centeral server to be a bottleneck. Of course, if you do a scan at www.pricewatch.com (http://www.pricewatch.com) you'll find that switches and hubs are basically the same price. A 5 port hub or switch seems to come in at the same price, a whopping $14 including shipping!

I agree, but heck, for 5 computers, how much can a hub really effect performance. I haven't looked at prices recently, but I'm sure they are still cheaper than switches, even though switches are very affordable now.

My network has 2 switches and 2 hubs. One hub is rarely used, but the other usually has a couple computers. I can get 7 megabyte a second between a pc on the hub to a pc on a switch just fine.

Re:Originally posted by: pwddesign
Buy a hub or a switch. They are very cheap, and then you can support even more computers.

Hmm.. I never thought about that. Might give it a try. so going from [ cable modem > 4 port router > hub > 2 computers ] is a combo that will work properly? Would there be any significant performance issues?

Re:Buy a hub or a switch. They are very cheap, and then you can support even more computers.

Re:Originally posted by: guy
OK, I have to ask. Why in the world is connecting the old computer directly to the router not an option? It's the obvious way to solve the problem!

haha, I knew this would come up. My roommates are using up the other ports on the router, so thats why I can't hook it up directly

Re:Yes, you need a crossover cable for computer to computer communication. Why can't you plug directly into the router?

By doing it through your first PC, you will probably need to use some sort of software to pass the internet on through. A proxy server would definately work. Not sure if you can use windows internet connection sharing in this situation.

but its a shame that netgear does not make a double 108 PCI card so i can actually use it. otherwise i have to buy a PCI cardbus reader.. just the TOC up quite a bit.

Boy do I miss my netgear RT314, all this is what i get for trying to get updated.

i think for TOC, this will be hard to beat http://www.netgear.com/products/details/CG814M.php
But I'm giving up 802.11a/g, and probably getting a crappy cable modem (docsis 1.1 only).

BUT
it will work, where linksys has failed me.

i always thought they were supposed to be some kind of uber company (compared to netgear/dlink).. then Cisco bought them and it appeared like a safe bet.

Re:Hardware suggestions? What are you guys running?
Whats the best cable modem and router? (combined or seperate, I dont really care)

ive been looking into that this http://www.netgear.com/products/details/CG814M.php
only 802.11b, which is a shame.. becasue G would be much nicer if i ever did backups from one computer to another (but then I guess those "speed doubling" setups would be more useful).

if i go seperate and dont get that 802.11b unit, i might as well get all "speed doubling" equipment for that reason. i looked into dlinks "gaming router".. meh. not my cup of tea, to much hype. just give me 802.11b/g or at most, speed boosted G, and thats enough martitechure.

Re:ive been doign some research and according to what i've found, this issue affects many linksys routers.

its a real shame for this unit, because i thought i'd found something really cool (docsis 2.0 ready modem, 802.11g, 4port rj45).. but looks like linksys has to update their firmware to fix this issue. but there has never been an update for this issue, and those who have called their tech support have been treated like dirt.

i've used a cheap $40 netgear 4 port router/switch for YEARS and never had this problem. This serves me right.
NEVER turn on a company who designed something good for you in the past, until you buy a product that forces you to go somewhere else.

Linksys blows. I blew $200 some odd dollars on their wireless cards ect.

and now its all going on ebay, and its time to update my old netgear stuffs with NEW netgear hardware.. like i shoulve done in the first place.

yet another poor effected individual: http://www.linksysinfo.com/mod…s&file=viewtopic&t=861 (http://www.linksysinfo.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=861)

and read Mr. Rucku's story and beyond. Very interesting.
http://forums.ac.turbinegames….read.php?t=4007&page=4 (http://forums.ac.turbinegames.com/showthread.php?t=4007&page=4)

This POS has taken way too many hours of my life away.

Buy Netgear, been good to me for years.. then i stumbled upon this Indian Tech supported piece of crap.
Absolutely useless.

Netgear or Dlink for cheap home stuff for me please.

Anyone feel free to recommend alternative products. Prerably Netgear as their hardware has been excellent for me.
Doesnt need to be a router/switch/modem combo necessarily, but it is nice. I'm considering Netgear's 802.11B cable modem.. I dont really care about the additional speed of 802.11g.. it just feels cool.
I dont use it as a network, just for internet.

Re:nevermind.. still going down.

but did seem better.. but didnt solve it.

Re:seems to be going strong.. 30min uptime on the AIM.. and my Friends network within steam seems to actually work now.

could someone explain to me plz why myself and that other guy that I linked to had to do this to get a good connection?

when i have never had to, to my knowledge for the last 5 years using cable internet?

i never tried port forwarding like he did.. but i ddint know what ports to open anyway for AIM/steam/everythint else that would be effected.

what exactly is wrong here, that never was before that this is required?

I'm going to go ahead and install my Norton AV'05, norton utils.

i did lose my connection twice so far, but that was because of low wireless ability, not the same problem i specified.. i can tell the difference.

but now the wired machine should work better with AIM as well too.

someone plz inform me what just happened, whats going on… i think this is kinda wierd.

Re:I read all those, there are no firmware updates for my model.

I dont know if there are alot of these out there, because its fairly new.

We'll see how this DMZ server thing goes.. I'm goign to do some gaming in CSS and see how it goes. I usually get dropped from there every 4-8 hours (ya, long time of gaming.. but it used to work like that)

Re:Try these threads, one may have the resolution you need

Re:Ok its enabled.. have no idea what I just did.. but it was a setting under Apps and Gaming.. in Linksys WCG200 router config.
Heres the hardware page http://www.linksys.com/product…id=33&scid=35&prid=579 (http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=33&scid=35&prid=579)

Hope this works.. I love that little thing.

Re:This guy's problem looks eerily similar: http://{$MySite}/me…ght_key=y&keyword1=AIM (http://{$MySite}/messageview.aspx?catid=36&threadid=1499236&highlight_key=y&keyword1=AIM)

But no one answered his question. Now I need to know what a DMZ server is, and why this fixed it for him…

goign to dig in my router settings to see if i can enable this.

Re:The PC I'm on now is a fresh format, and I havent put norton utilities 2005/NAV '05 on yet.

I'll do some searches about norton to see whats going on.. I'd hate to start spending $150 for a netgear router just to try that.

Besides what you just brought up, I've tried about everything that doesnt cost $

I'm on a fresh XP SP2 install with nothing else on but AIM.. it did it with only SP1 as well. No windows firewall is turned on (relying on the routers firewall.. which I have also enabled/disabled).

Re:There have been issues reported about Norton Utilities. You may need to get the latest bits from them. If I remember anything else that might be causing this, I'll reply again. Also, do some keyword searches in the forum, I'm pretty sure this situation has come up before

Q: I try a friend of mine up and running on its new Comcast Cable Internet. He has a Motorola Surfboard cable modem (SB5100) and a Netgear router (RP614NA) Working directly with the incoming cable termination site in his basement, I can not a browser to connect. I tried hooking the PC (W2K SP3) directly to the modem and through the router without success. Ive run the installation wizard with the modem and the Netgear setup software. I get a port number, which tells me that the PC is recognized by the router. Ive reset the router to factory settings. The router detects even dynamci IP address. The farthest I got was the return of the modems MAC address.

Forgive my stupidity, but Im stuck. Where to begin?

Any good tutorials on set-up and troubleshooting?

Thanks!

Best Answer: Road Runner is not the best, but if like most of us, you don't have much choice and have to take what you can get. You can call their tech support and they may be able to help you fix it while on the telephone with them. Give it a try.

Re:I use Insight and both times I have hooked up a new cable account, I have had to call the cable company. The first time they had the wrong MAC number off the modem. The second time they could not tell me what was wrong other than it was something on their end …

Always worked after I called though

Give the cable company a ring.

Re:Thank you very much!!:D

I feel like I have a fighting chance to get this working now!

Re:Make sure that the Cables are all Functional.

Many Internet Cable providers use the MAC number of the computer that was first connected to the Cable system as a form of authentication (Password).

So first connect the computer Directly to the modem and make sure that it is working. If it is not working directly for sure it will not work with the Router.

If the computer alone connected to the modem does not get Internet, check the Network Setting, and call the ISP.

Could be that there is a MAC number confusion.

Once you make it work with single computer connected the system through the Router and Clone the MAC number of the computer?s NIC to the Router.

Since a Router comes with his own MAC number you ISP thinks that someone is Stealing Signal and disconnect. However, all current Cable/DSL Routers provides a menu entry that will allow you to Clone the MAC number of the Registered NIC. Thus the MAC number of the main computer's NIC becomes the MAC number of the Router.

Q: What MAC number I should Use?

Re: The one of the computer that works well when it is connected directly to the Cable Modem.

Q: I heard about MAC trucks, but do not know how to find Network Card MAC?

Link to: How Do I Find my IP and MAC Numbers? (http://ip_mac.html)

Link to: Using IPCONFIG Command Line Utility, and or Winipcfg (Wntipcfg) GUI Utility to find Local Network Info (IP, MAC). (http://www.ezlan.net/ipcfg.html)

Q: How to Clone the MAC number to my Router?

Re: Unfortunately I do not have the manual of all Routers that are out there. You will have to read your Router?s manual.

:sun:

Re:Yep, incoming cable into the modem, then a patch cable into the router, then to the PC.

I cannot reach any website. I didn't think to open a command prompt window and try to ping a website or do a tracert.

What I meant with the port number is that when the PC is connect to the router, the router displays a port number (lights up) whereas when the PC is not connected, no port is displayed.

Quote: "What is the IP your getting on the pc, is it a private IP?"

Not sure what you mean here.:o

Re:Ahh, I misread your post. What is the IP your getting on the pc, is it a private IP? You shouldn't need to install the software from the cable company. Can you ping www.yahoo.com from a command prompt? I'm not sure what you mean when you say you are getting a port number.

Re:You have the pc plugged into the router, then the router into the modem, right? I just want to make sure, for your description sounds like you have the router coming after the modem.
