Re:Originally posted by: guy
Give the guy a break. Would you please tell us why you would like to cascade two Routers through the WAN?
I am giving him a break. i/expressions/rolleye.gif What he's trying to accomplish would go a long ways toward understanding the issues and recommending a course of action. Since on the face of it, the request sounds somewhat silly, I wanted to clarify what was expected of the lashup. I don't think the request was unreasonable…

Re:u probably have dhcp enabled on both and they are getting confused. Manually assign the ips on b and its clients.

Re:I wanted to do something similar. I wanted to conect my cable modem to my new wireless router, then connect my old router to the new router and use the old router as a switch. But then (last weekend), I grabbed this free-after-rebate 8-port switch from NewEgg and won't have to bother with it!

Gigafast 8-port switch (http://www.newegg.com/app/Viewproduct.asp?DEPA=1&submit=manufactory&catalog=30&manufactory=1605&description=&srchFor=gigafast)

Re:Originally posted by: guy
Give the guy a break. Would you please tell us why you would like to cascade two Routers through the WAN?

I think of several reasons why it would be usefull, but I guess it does help in answering the question. Not sure why it works half the time, but I do know some routers are not capable of NATing from a private IP to a private IP. What two routers are you using?

Re:Give the guy a break.

Would you please tell us why you would like to cascade two Routers through the WAN?

Re:No reason for u to be using 2 routers. Plug LAN port of A into LAN port of b so u can use the switch feature of router B. No need for it to route or double NAT, especially since u don't know how, or need to do it.

Re:Why don't you start with the reason for trying to connect two routers in the first place?

Q: Hi all,

Right now Im on a direct cable modem to NIC connection.

Im wondering if I have a router with a firewall between the modem and the NIC will do anything to get rid of the pop-up ads by marketers via the Internet? (By pop-up ads, I mean the windows shopping ads u003cuseru003e u003cmessageu003e style ie without sending)

Thanks for any info!

Re:Originally posted by: guy
I thought NAT was just something that lets an entire LAN use one registered IP (from the router itself) to communicate to the global Internet address's. I would not consider that a firewall.Concerning Home, and SOHO Network Users.

The word Firewall is a generic term like the word Car.

Anything from a Yugo to an El-Ninio can be called a Car.

When you use few computers to share one Internet connection, the information that comes from the Internet needs to know to which computer it belongs. The main function of Cable/DSL Router is to Route the Internet signal to the requesting computer. This function is called Network Address Translation (NAT).

As result information that comes from the Internet and was not requested by a computer on your LAN does not know where to go, and it is blocked, hence NAT Firewall.

However any communication initiated from any of your LAN?s computers will go out to the Internet, and will be answered. As a result programs calling home, spywares, ?zombies? etc. can communicate freely in lieu of the NAT Firewall. You will not be aware of these activities unless you monitor the communication locally.

[b]When you are connected to a Website or downloading files, a lot of junk can get to your Hard Drive. Since you requested the pages for the site the NAT Firewall will not block what comes in from this page. If the ?Site Keeper? loaded the page with ?Junk? it will get to your computer.

Most decent software Firewalls will alert you to existence of this communication, and will allow controlling it in various ways.

In addition using programs like Ad-ware, and Trojan Blocker, will further secure the Network.

If you just want to block WindowsXP uncontrolled Internet interaction this program is an excellent tool. Link: XP-Antispy. (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2062)

So, for small Home Network the NAT Firewall is the first step to build secured system.

P.S. I just saw a Cable/DSL Router with ?NAT FIREWALL? for $7.99 after rebate.

Re:I thought NAT was just something that lets an entire LAN use one registered IP (from the router itself) to communicate to the global Internet address's. I would not consider that a firewall.

Re:I just saw this in the DC forum…. give it a go and see if it helps….

Section #16 (http://www.monroeworld.com/pchelp/xptweaks.php#5)

–guy

Re:no….it was apparent. but that still doesn's make NAT a firewall. Most entry level routers from a couple years back didnt have firewalls. They were only used for sharing a connection between a bunch of PC's. a software firewall was still needed in most cases. Most newer entry level routers nowdays have SPI firewalls.

NAT only rewrites the packets to allow for inbound/outbound trafffic between a private and public network, it does not inspect them to ensure they are valid.

However, I'm sure you already know all this and we are arguing over semantics….

Re:I guess that putting the statement "Entry Level Cable/DSL Routers" is not apparent, so how about this.

The NAT function of all the :Q Entry Level Cable/DSl Routers is the center of the Firewall.:wine:

Re:The NAT function of all the Entry Level Cable/DSl Routers is the center of the Firewall.

NAT is not firewalling

Re:Originally posted by: guy
Quote: "not all routers have firewalls"

Nah, not So.

The NAT function of all the Entry Level Cable/DSl Routers is the center of the Firewall.

No NAT No Firewall.

No Firewall No NAT.

This is true, but VERY loosely. The generic term "Firewall" is simply a border security device for your network to restrict access based on a pre-set list of rules. If you're using "firewall" in this sense, then yes. A SOHO router is a firewall. A Cisco 2501 running NAT only would also be a firewall, however.

To most people in "the industry", a firewall is far more – Stateful packet inspection, deeper protocol diving to look for potential attack signatures, application proxies, etc. This isn't usually provided by the SOHO routers.

It's important to understand that there *is* a difference between something like a Cisco PIX 501 and a Linksys gateway. You get what you pay for!

No Firewall No NAT.

Re:Originally posted by: guy
but in short, routers aren't generally made to do that, and if you can get one to block certain types of scripts, it'd prolly be really hard to get it to just block pop-ups.

no, but a decent firewall should….a router does nothing more than route trafffic. not all routers have firewalls, and not all firewalls are routers.
a more appropriate title might have been "Will a firewall get rid of pop-up ads?" … but that's being nit picky since we all knew what he meant

Re:Heh. If I were you, I'd just use Netscape/Mozilla (open source rulez….), and use ad-aware to make sure you have no adware on your system. Gettin a lil off topic, but in short, routers aren't generally made to do that, and if you can get one to block certain types of scripts, it'd prolly be really hard to get it to just block pop-ups.

What? There are firewalls that have the ability to block activex and java/javascript….they will be able to block popupsYeah NIS blocks all of it.

Actually AT-Guard, one of the first Software Firewalls (3-4 years ago), blocks all of it.

Symantec bought AT Gaurd added 40Mb/sec. of who knows what code and sells it as Norton Internet Security.

Re:A router will not block windows/ie ads. And what 22admub said about disabling windows messaging…I am almost positive this does not work as I have tried it. So what do you do? Download Pop-Up Stopper or any other third party software that blocks ads. I highly recommend Pop-Up Stopper, its free, does an excellent job, and takes up very few resources. I have Norton Security 2003, and it seems to work well on the windows ads as well. I mainly use it for security issues though. Hope it helped.

Re:Originally posted by: guy
firewalls that can block activex and java/javascript can

What?

Re:Originally posted by: guy
you can just disble that. control panal->admin tools->services. Then disable the "messenger" service. I'm pretty sure that disabling that has no effect on anything else

I think that is more what Com was looking for.

Re:Since the Router Firewall is a one way Firewall, you probably will need additional Software firewall.

Get a suit like Norton Internet Security that filters Ads, and other "Junk".

Newegg the Linksys WRT54G on sale today. Im thinking about getting the faster version and the WRT54GS is not going to do something for me.

Re:Double Post.

It's all D-Links fault.

Re:Still, assume 16Mbps, or 2MB/s, it would still be within reason, but at 25ft vertically and trhough 3 stories, I get about 3Mb/s……Basically as fast as my cable line….

Hell, those are the speeds I used to get with my 802.11b AP that I have stashed away in a closet

I gave up on D-Link and their Xtreme-G just a couple days ago. I have my system and my wifes laptop here in the computer room, the wireless router just on the other side of the far wall in the bedroom, and my secondary machine two rooms down all on the same floor. Transferring files between my two systems I was topping out at 6.5Mbps. Bleh.

Re:Speedbooster is different than SuperG and XtremeG.

Speedbooster does not use multiple channels for transmission like SuperG and XtremeG do. Believe it or not, this is a good thing. It still achieves some improvement without using multiple channels, which could reak havoc on any nearby wireless networks.

Also check out U.S. Robotics products (if you can find any ) I know that they have 120Mbps over one channel.

Basically, the point of all of this concerns the fact that signal quality degrades over distance and through obstacles. The better the signal and the farther the reach, the better the chances for achieving the highest thoroughput anywhere in the device's range.

Keep in mind, it may say 54Mbps o nthe box, but there is [practially] no way you'll achieve that [theoretical] speed.

Best Answer: hi friend
i prefer NETGEAR ,bcoz i worked as a tech support executive in both linksys and netgear -just like call center …
as a tech -i prefer netgear and it work great with all latest technology and the wireless speed and gaming speed is really good …i hav made more customers to smile with netgear product…..if prefer to buy netgear model number wgr614v9 or wnr854t …..if u get these model product even i can make u to smile ….thank u

Re:Any of you using netgear 314 doing any netmeeting through it? I would like to know how you configured it if you can netmeet and use the video cam and microphone through the router.

I have a netgear RO318 I want to set up to do net meeting and replace my linux server with its firewall, just so I can do thisnetmeetting stuff. It is important I do it right. I have a bed ridden relative that I want to set up vidcam so his children can see and visit with him through the net from across the web.

Re:My Linksys has been kicking for a year without problems.

Re:well this is going to sound stupid but what is this printer server thing as my self am looking as getting a router for sharning my cable modem

Re:Are there any significant problems with the Linksys? I was thinking about picking one up for $70 at Best Buy at that before noon sale tomorrow. Is the Linksys secure? Can I turn cetain ports off? tia

Re:SMC. It's nice being able to turn on my computer from work, so when I get home my comp is already on.

Re:Linksys seems to have a freindlier interface than does the SMC – however the SMC does offer the print server option. As for possibly having a server on your network – i found it simpler to use the linksys for "port forwarding" since SMC has changed their interface a couple times and don't seem to update their manuals. I was helping a newbie try to set his up (over the phone with him sending screen shots) even with the latest firmware upgrade their online pdf manual still didn't match. Horse a piece. both offer similar things.

Re:Netgear RT314!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!

Re:If u have a laptop consider wireless router SMC 7004AWBR , I have it , I love it. Freedom of roaming in the house without wires is so good;)

Re:Yeah, I like the print server option too. Too bad I have the linksys. Actually, I'm very happy with my linksys.

Re:I have the SMC Barricade router, and very happy with it…

I guess there's not much difference between the 3 routers, but with SMC you do get the Print Server which is nice…

Re:I have used and set up several brands. Go with the SMC Barricade 7004ABR. You get a print server and reliability. Had a problem with one SMC I set up for a client. Tech support was awesome, helped me update the firmware … bingo, ready to roll in 15 minutes. Go with SMC!

Re:I have a Netgear RT314, and I love it. After the initial configuration, it's run without any trouble since the beginning of July.

Re:don't forget there is Netgear RP114 too.

Re:There are no significant differences between most of the Entry level Cable/DSL Routers.

Conventional Wisdom claims: The Routing Trinity.

1. Netgear RT314
2. Barricade 7004ABR
3. Linksys BEFSR41

Some Routers have an additional Printer Server, and DialUp Modem input for backup.

I would choose the one that has the features that fit the way you use the
Internet (and may be it is on sale).

This is a direct connection to a cable modem, router, so its no problem. I can connect to sites from another machine without a problem when connected to the same modem (after a reset), so it seems a Windows issue.

Best Answer: try resetting internet explorer
1.-

start internet explorer then click on
tools > internet options > advance > reset

select all the options and apply
2.-
then click on the general tab > delete

then delete all the browsing history
3.-
click on connections > lan settings

and make sure that you are not using a proxy server just untick the option and apply

4. download this 2 programs

drweb cureit

http://www.freedrweb.com/

malwarebytes

http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-An…

reboot the computer in safe mode and run them there make sure to select full scan and remove everything thatit is found

good luck

Re:I had a similar issue as well, it turns out that the dsl modem needed to be reset:o
I wasted about 8 hours that day:|

Re:i had the same problem once. i could connect to most sites, but not walmart, avon, newegg and a few others.

i had to clear my cache and reset my modem. the modem support told me that some times … well, i dont remember what he told me, but he said something about settings getting stuck in the modem.

after i reset the modem, it was fine.

hope it works for you.

Re:hope it is not too late, but I would check your Internet Security settings. There is a setting to only allow ssl traffic or trusted sites… etc… I would check those out first.

Q: I have a wireless router from Linksys. Wireless-B. There are some days when it thinks it just works great. And other days, my cable modem to work at once, but then stop working. I unplug the router and cable just through my normal computer without a wireless router and it works fine. Other problems are when I plug in the router, cable modem stops working and is unable to access the Internet. Works fine, but when connected to the router stops working.

Can anyone help?

Best Answer: There are a lot of things that can affect your wireless signal so I'm only going to be able to give a couple suggestions that are at least something to try before spending more money on something else.

First, your 802.11 signal is fine. Your new wireless g router is compatible with 802.11a/b/g so the only thing it wouldn't work with is the new wireless N signals, but in that case it just wouldn't work at all.

Second, if your router has antennas which I think it does try repositioning them several times and see if it has any effect. It probably won't but this is the easiest thing to test first.

Lastly, log in to your router by typing http://192.168.1.1/ into your browser. If you have setup a user and password, enter that. If not the default user is nothing and default password is admin. Once in, look around the wireless settings and see if it allows you to change the "channel" of the signal. Sometimes by changing the channel you will avoid interference from other wireless signals in the area and your problems will magically disappear. I can't remember if my linksys g router had this option or not.

Other than that you may be forced to doing lots of research online, I have had to do it in the past and these things worked for me.

Cable Descramblers Plans Get Free Cable.
Re:Originally posted by: guy
How would I know if I cloned the MAC correctly? If you do not know you proably didinot do it.

Many Internet Cable Providers use the MAC number of your computer's NIC (Network Card) as a mean of authentication (Password).

Since a Router comes with his own MAC number you ISP thinks that someone is Stealing Signal and disconnect. However, all current Cable/DSL Routers provides a menu entry that will allow you to Clone the MAC number of the Registered NIC. Thus the MAC number of the main computer's NIC becomes the MAC number of the Router.

Q: What MAC number I should Use?

Re: The one of the computer that works well when it is connected directly to the Cable Modem.

Q: I heard about MAC trucks, but do not know how to find Network Card MAC?

Re: Download this free Proggie, unzip and Run (nothing to install). Wait a little and it will tell you these little things that are important to Local Network (including the MAC number).

Re: How to Clone the MAC number to my Router.

Q: Unfortunately I do not have the manual of all Routers that are out there. You will have to read your Router?s manual.

For her house the problem was a pcmcia card that had simply worn out from being put in and out and bent here and there. My problem lays with two things, a low signal strength and the weather. On hot sunny days it seems to hurt my signal … I theorize.

Yes, but ours is a network faxing software. In essence we are charging $95/person and ours works better than any other Mac software on the market hands down. We are also OS 10.2 (Jaguar) compatible.

Q: Do not ask do not tell why this is set in this way. Im cleaning up some old junk people – and the need to work around this problem before I go to the site and put them in the right way.

Office location has two ends – front and back end.

Front end encloses the server, a switch and patch panel – a dozen workstations – all internal IP addresses assigned statically, with the server to communicate fine – NIC NIC 1-2 switch with the WAN (cable modem) – 2nd nic left wide open end

Back the “owners” workstations – 4 workstations – a single switch – and an uplink on the switch to another cable modem – all work – obviously because there are no wet or level 3 device – have hired their own external public IP from the ISP.

One of owners should be in the RDP server and print a number of reports (3rd party program)

I need to know how I could possibly lead to the local printer plug gate through its terminal session – that would be already working – I just need a temporary solution for now .

I will bring physical and a physical connection between the back-end and the patch panel with a level 3 device to route traffic for the whole office area – so The more secure.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
If the printer is on the terminal server you will need to share it. Well, thats all that's neccessary in MS Terminal Server 2000/2003 at least. Did you check your event logs to see if any of the computers listed print install errors?
Then just install the correct printer driver on the server using the "add driver" feature. RDP will do the rest for you. If it still doesn't work it should show errors in the servers event log.

Q: I have a gateway server with 3 NICs. Connectes a NIC to the cable modem, NIC B connectes to a client computer.

Recently, I added C NIC that connects to another client computer but I can not seem to get on the computer is connected to an IP available. NIC B uses 192.168 IP range and I told NIC IP range 10.0 C to use.

Before, my computer name used to be AIUR [192.168.0.1] and now says Aiur [10.0.0.1] and I want to know if this is still ok? I want the computers connected to NIC B and C have Internet access.

in the DHCP settings for the 10.0 and 192.168 range, I put the router and DNS server IP 10.0.0.1 and 192.168.0.1. These are the IP addresses I assigned manually to the network and a DNS service running on the computer.

If you more info, just reply.

The reason I try to do is add more bandwidth between the gateway server and each client PC. HPNA is the only way to get here so no CAT5.

Best Answer: Seriously? You're just posting your test questions without even making an effort to disguise it?

TAKE YOUR OWN TEST!

Cable Descramblers Plans Get Free Cable.
Re:You need to setup your "server" as a router to route between the 2 subnets. You can do that with routing and remote access in the control panel.

Once you get that working the computers *should* be able to see eachother.

Local Client Cash Machine
Re:<< ok, I redid 2 scopes. 10.0 and 192.168. I then multiscoped them as 1 scope. They still can't see each other in network neighborhood [scope 1 can't see computers in scope2 and vice versa] but they can access the internet >>

That is because they aren't in the same subnet…. Since you have the pieces of your network phyiscally seperated the only solution that I can think of would probably be a WINS server. I'm not sure how to set one up, so don't ask me… Maybe someone else will know.
I couldn't get both networks to display in network neighborhood so I deleted scope 2 and set the IPs of the NICs on the gateway machine to 192.168 and excluded their IPs from the DHCP. DHCP wouldn't let me create a scope using the same subnet of another.

Getting More Customers/Clients
Re:I don't know if what I'm trying to do is bonding. I thought bonding is when you take multiple incoming connections to act as 1 connection. I'm not trying to do that here

Essentially, this is what I want to happen in the long run.
Gateway has 4 NICS [A B C D].
NIC A – connects to cabe modem.
NIC B – connects to client machine B.
NIC C – connects to client machine C and D.
NIC D – connects to client machine E.

I can get it to work, not exactly the way I wanted it to work though =(

Here are the problem.
computers connected to B C and D can access the internet but
- DHCP isn't assigning IPs to computers connected to NIC C and D
- I have to manually enter in an IP on computers connected to NICs C and D to get them to work
- They're all using the same subnet. I named NIC B 192.168.0.1, NIC C = 192.168.0.10 NIC D = 192.168.0.20
- I'm not sure what I should as the IP address for the routers, DNS and gateway for NIC B,C and D. Do I use 192.168.0.1 for all? Do I enter the IP address of the NIC [ex.: enter NIC B's IP for as the gateway and DNS server for NIC B, enter NIC C's IP as the gateway and DNS server for NIC C, etc.]
- computers connected to NIC B can't see computers connected to NIC C and D and vice versa for NIC C and D.

How To Build A Gaming Computer For Under $1000
Re:I don't know HomePNA very well, but I was under the impression that you got a total amount of bandwidth across the wire – No matter how many NIC's you add to it, you're still going to hit that bandwidth cap.

"bonding" two NIC's together to get more bandwidth is fairly difficult and very hardware dependent, even using Ethernet. It's not as simple as adding two NIC's to the machines and it will magically work.

Im not the only problem. A friend says he has the same problem. This reminds me that a kind of reset sent packing by Roadrunner to cut down on bittorrent traffic, but its really beside the point. Im just looking for a way to correct the problem or a way around it.

Does anyone know if there is a sort of home routers auto-reconnect, or restart when they feel they have a modem reset, or heard of this problem and knows how to fix it do?

Thanks.

Best Answer: check settings for that router

Typically (and mine) is http://192.168.0.1

Sure, but I still have to be at home to reset it. If I'm running bittorrent while I'm at work all day it takes that much longer to get files b/c the connection is dead until I get home to reset it. I'm looking for a router that will reset automatically.

If you call and complain they'll probably send a technician out. They'd likely find nothing wrong with your setup and be agreeable to replacing your modem. I'm on RR and don't have such issues.

Yeah, been there and done that. I'm on my 3rd modem, but I think they just keep replacing the modem b/c they don't want to piss me off by making me wait all day for them to show up to say "everything looks fine" . One tech did tell me my "upstream power level" was a little high at 51 dBmV, but he said that's really not that far out of line with the average.

It only happens when upload a lot of data. I can download all day with no interruption, which makes me think this is some traffic-control scheme by RR. Again, that's a debatable conspiracy theory on my part, and my real question is about a self-rebooting router.

Thanks for the replies.
