I Network Setup Wizard and the network assigned IP address of 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3

What is the problem? Also can I go to both computers and share them, but the only things I can share the files and folders in the shared documents, even after I sharing and security settings changed.

Best Answer: If running XP or 2K, use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on the wifi machine

are you confusing mbits with MByte/s?

even 100base t is kinda slow.
Also did you extend the cable by more then one (ie the computers are quite a ways apart from eachother)? Other then that, I blame either shoddy cable, or bad card.

Obviously everyone's advice about using a 192.168.x.x network will also work, but FYI microsoft already thought of just this case and the OS has a built in provision for it. You will need to enable file sharing or whatever, but you should be able to see one computer from the other via the network.
In the control panel / network connections menu, select "new connection wizzard".
2) Follow the wizzard steps, one at a time.
3) If both are Win XP, do the same to the next computer, if not have the first computer create a disk to do the work for you (on the last screen of the "new connection wizzard").
4) Shut off both computers.
5) Turn one on, then the other (if the sharing doesn't work you need to turn them off, and then boot them up one at a time in the opposite order). Sorry but things don't work smoothly yet and this is an annoying step I haven't been able to get around.
6) Click on "My Network"
7) Share away.

That last post gives way to much info but at the same times offers no fix for the problem? From the question I am assuming he already has NIC?s installed because he said he used a crossover cable before.

FYI guy, the color of the cable has no real meaning as to whether it is a patch cable or crossover. Are you trying to use the same cable? If it is a different one, compare the ends and see of the colored wires are in the same order or different order. Look carefully because there will only be two wires different. If you are using the same one as before then it should work. It could have a crimp or break that would disrupt the communication. Look where the cable plugs into the NIC?s (Network Interface Card) and see if you little lights. If yes that?s a good sign. If no, then you need a new cable.

What OS are you running? Be sure that both computers have TCP/IP installed. If you have 98SE or above then leave it set to Obtain an IP address automatically. They will assign themselves an IP address. Be sure that you have both of them configured with the same workgroup name also.

Still doesn?t work. There are lots of other thinks to check? Post back and let me know how it goes?

Teach Your Cat to Walk on a Leash
Re:Connecting two computers for File, and Printer Sharing.

This is a primer of the topic. The goal is to provide basic knowledge, and point in the right direction. Further reading of textbooks and similar sources, and actual experimenting can achieve comprehensive understanding. The primer covers the use of this hardware with Windows OS.

Option 1: Install Network Interface Card (NIC) in each computer (PCMCIA in the Laptop), and Connected them with CAT5 Crossover cable. (Cost about $25 between Desktops, $45 between Desktop to Laptop). You can connect at a speed 100Mb/sec.

Option 2: Mixed connection. If one computer has NIC) or you want to put one. Get an Ethernet to USB adaptor. You connect it with CAT 5 to your computer, and the adaptor goes to the USB port in the second computer (Cost about $15 more then open 1). BTW: regardless of what they say it is Max 10Mb/sec connection).

Example: EZ CONNECT COMPACT USB 10/100 CONVERTER. (http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10315385&hdwt=30701&loc=101)

Option 3: Get a USB Direct Connect Module (this is a USB cable that has a special Network module installed on it).

Connect the two computers through the USB; install the Drivers, and your are Connected. This type of connection supports only the speed allowed by USB.

Example:

6FT USB FILE TRANSFER AND NETWORKING CABLE. (http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10258088&hdwt=30506&loc=101)

This will cost about $40-$50

The connection is restricted by the Max distance allowed for USB cables. If the two computers, are in two different rooms you will have to resort to other solution.

Important, do not connect two computers with regular USB cable, such a connection may result in frying your computer's Motherboard.

Option 4: Direct Cable Connection, uses printer parallel cable, or COM serial cable. The most inexpensive, but the slowest, and most awkward. (Cost about $10).

You can find settings info here:
Direct Cable Connection. (http://www.wown.info/j_helmig/dccmain.htm)

Option 5: Wireless Ad-hoc connection.

The wireless option is similar to option 1. However it can be done without the connecting CAT5 cable.

Two Wireless cards can converse adequately. Most cards' software let you choose between Infra Structure, and Ad-Hoc Mode.

Infrastructure = Card to Access Point.

Ad-Hoc = Card to Card.

For a Laptop you get a plug-in PCMCIA card.

For Desktop, you need either a PCMCIA card with PCI Adaptor (extra $40), or a USB client Card. Either of these cards has to of good quality to maintain a reliable connection.

The easiest – Option 3
The Cheapest – Option 4
The practical – Option 2
The fastest with elegant look for the future – Option
The most expensive, but "Very Cool" – Option 5
Has anyone tried this setup? Should I keep DHCP? Which IP address should I use? Anyhelp would appreciated.

Thanks

Best Answer: Those are two routers… are you sure that's what you want to do?

Connect your broadband modem into the WAN port of one of them, and then connect a LAN port of that router into the WAN port of the other router.

If you want to have a single wireless network, then you need to configure only one of them to have the wireless capability. The wireless radio for the other should be turned off. Also make sure that only the first one (the one connected to the broadband router) has DHCP enabled.

If you want to run two different wireless networks, then connect them as above, but make sure the wireless radio is on for both. One would have an IP address of 192.168.0.1 and the other could be 192.168.1.1. (To keep the network segregated.) Both would run DHCP for their respective networks. You would then set the router furthest from the modem to allow connectivity through the WAN.

If you wanted one to be open and one to be secure, then make the one closest to the modem the open one. This will allow you to secure the "outer" router and seperate it from the "inner" router.
All I had to do was to connect the linksys thru a normal port to the dlink's wan port. The two routers already had different IP's. So I didn't have to change anything. Also I disabled my DHCP on the dlink(don't know if this is necessary or not).

I should be able to configure my Net Gear & D-Link routers in a similar way.

I plan to reassign D-Link router IP to 192.168.55.1 and disable DHCP. Net Gear RP114 will be accessing WAN/internet and D-Link DI-713P will be essentially a switch, wireless access point and print server. I prefer to use Net Gear to access internet since it has "keyword blocking" feature to deter my kid's friends from accessing certain sites inappropriate for kids. Will connect D-Link WAN port using a straight patch cable into LAN port on the Net Gear. Has anyone tried this and do they know if it will work?

You probably are better off replacing the Linksys with the D-Link. This way the Wireless part will be connected directly to the Router. Disable DHCP on the Linksys, and connect the Uplink of the Linksys to one of the regular ports on the D-Link.

What you get is a D-link Wireless, and 5 free RJ-ports (2 on the D-Link, three on the Linksys). Linksys WAN port stays empty.

I also have a D-Link Router DI-713P which I would like to tie the LAN side to the LAN side of the D-Link to establish a printer port and wireless conections. Can I just use a Crossover cable between a LAN port on each router? I think this will work but I am not sure. When I use my browser to address the routers how it will will work since both routers have same IP 192.168.0.1.

However, I have the feeling that your are trying an inappropriate setting. I.E connecting the WAN port to a Regular port on a Router that gets its connection from a WAN port.

If you want to expand the network you can use the second Router as a Switch, you don?t need the Routing, and DHCP settings.

Hard set the speeds on both machines. Start with 10 meg/half duplex and work your way up from there.

Check the NIC properties on both machines (not protocol, the hardware), and make sure the speed & duplex agree. Also look in the "advanced" sections, if they're there, and make sure everything advanced is unchecked/deselected.

Now in the shop, the longest cable-crossover that she was 10, “which was not enough, so the seller told me the crossover cable, buy a link, and then just plug normal Cat5 cable to the other end of the link to catch up, regardless of the length I wanted, is this true?

So, I have the cards installed without problems was, and both comps have same workgroup name, File and printer sharing enabled on both, but when I go to Network Neighborhood, any comp only see themselves . . can you give me some ideas on how to this?

Thanks much
RYan soooooo right

Up until very recently, crossover cables were all homemade. In the lab, I still look twice at a crossover.
Tech support has a very valid concern, backed up with real world experience.
However, the PC nic's can't tell the difference. Lots of people do it every day.
On the other hand, if it doesn't work, its time to borrow a hub or switch to see if its the PC's or the cable.

I was at the Linksys Support page for my specific card (EtherFast 10/100 LNE100TX), and it says that "cross-over cabling is neither supported nor recommended by Linksys. "…….does that mean that Linksys somehow has the cards set to not recognize cross-over, because they want you to buy their other networking equip?

What do you think?

I used a crossover cable to the wall jack to connect to one of the ports of the switch (not the WAN port). If I do this I can network and Internet to a computer that I connected to the router / switch, but my laptop with a wireless Internet connection will not, connecting to the network because I can access the router setting through the wireless network. When I did this with my Belkin wireless router / switch, I have an Internet connection with both wired and wireless computers.

Best Answer: Yes – there are several ways to do this, but here is the easiest way (IMHO)

1. On the downstairs router, find out what the DHCP server settings are. Typically they will be something like 192.168.1.100 to 150
Write that down and write down the address of the router

2. On the upstairs router
disconnect the router from the downstairs router
access the router using a cable
make these changes to the router setup:
1. Give the router a new IP address It needs to be on the same network as the downstairs router but using an address that does not conflict
so your downstairs router has an address of 192.168.1.1
it has a DHCP pool setting of 192.168.1.100 to 150
set the upstairs router to an address of 192.168.1.10
2. Turn off the DHCP server for the router
save your settings

Now plug the router back in and restart all machines
Your upstairs router is now part of the downstairs network. Your downstairs router will now assign and control the IP addresses for the upstairs devices

Your good to go

Re:As a first step, disconnect the Dorm plug.

Put the Computer in on one regular port, and set the working Wireless Network between the tow computers.

The ability to see the Router from the Laptop, means that there is a working signal not necessarily a working Network.

Once you have a working Network connect the Dorm jack to a third regular port, and check if the Laptop get a working IP that is part of the dorm IP band.

Re:i just want to use my wireless router/switch as a wap. But i can't seem to do that. I tried disabling dhcp but that still doesn't work

Re:Was hoping this would answer a related question. Is there a way to disable the router capability of a Netgear MR814 or MR314 (both are 4 port wireless routers) and convert it to strictly a switch with uplink capabilities to a router or another switch? I have both of these units. The MR314 is currently handling a "true" router role, attached to cable modem, and also being used as a WAP. Most of the rooms in my home are running on a hardwired CAT-5 network but have two computers (one a laptop) which use the wireless mode. The MR314 has performed very well but do to the location of the cable connection(corner room) and the floorplan of my home, the signal strength falls off in some rooms due to intervening walls.

Without thinking it all the way through, I recently jumped on a hot deal for the MR814. The plan was to install it (or the MR314) on the other side of my home in a room wired for CAT5 and use it as another WAP to improve the wireless coverage. Wasn't until I started to actually plan out the install that I began to wonder if I could uplink either unit and use it strictly as a switch with a WAP. Haven't done anything, yet (busy with the holiday) but wanted to make sure this will work before I start to setting it up.

Thanks in advance.

Re:it works if i connect my laptop to the switch using the ethernet port so thats not the problem.

Re:You can use it has a switch and AP. Your problem stem from your Dorm connection.

In order to use two computers surfing the Internet, you need two either two static IPs, or a Router (in a setting that accept a Router).

Other wise you have to put two NICs in your wired computer, connect one to the dorm Net, and the other to a regular port on your Router, disable DHCP in the Router, and install software NAT (ICS) on the all computers.
It seems that this is only a few seconds, but it is enough to drop out of games.

So far I have tried following.

1. Several NICs.
2. Several PCI slots.
3. Different network speeds (100 and 10 / 2 and full duplex)

I have no idea what the problem could be. I have setup more complicated networks than those without problems, I doubt this is a case of user error. Anyway, heres some more info that could be assistance.

Main PC
Athlon 1600 977 503 Epox 8KHA `+ KT266A (latest BIOS)
Level-One 10/100 NIC (latest drivers)
ISDN 64Kbps Internet Connection

Second PC
Duron 1000
Asus A7A266 Ali Magik 1 (Do not use the latest BIOS)-Link DFE-538TX
D 10/100 NIC (using the drivers for it)

Thank you in advance.

Re:It may be the board/NIC combo.

Years ago I remember having problems with pauses/freezes on some relatives Shuttle boards and nearly any NIC we tried. We only tried four NIC's: 2 older ISA NE2000 compatibles, an unknown Maxtech brand 10/100, and NetGear 10/100. Every NIC with this particular motherboard (2 different boards) had the same problems in Windows — small pauses or freezes while playing games and the same while working with other apps, though this was less noticeable unless the system was under heavy use. (Windows 95/98 were used.)

The aforementioned motherboards by Shuttle were Pentium boards with Intel chipsets. When I tried my Intel 100B Pro NIC in either board, the pausing/freezing stopped. When I bought other Intel NIC's, and tried them in the Shuttle board, the problem was still gone, but if I retried any other NIC, the problems recurred.

Just a thought.

Re:No go, after 10-15 seconds the first time-out occurs and I get disconnected. I'm starting to think it's the cheap Ali Magik 1 chipset …

Re:I'm off to try out a new cable and to check all the settings. Thank you for your replies, I will let you know how things went.

Re:The Professional Gamer's League Linksys 10/100 NICs would do this while playing Quake 2. I tried it with multiple cards in multiple systems and it was definately to blame. I'm sure network traffic was intermittant, but we gave up on it when we realized all we had to do was boycott Linksys (PGL Certified my ass)

Re:Check the settings in the NIC properties. Many of the drivers will have a selection to allow the computer to put the NIC to sleep (to save power).

Good Luck

Scott

Re:Seems that you have tried everthing except a different cable. You might want to try that; your cable might be bad.

I want to be able to easily share files.

Also if its possible, ICS internat would be great. My 2000 box has the modem, and the ISA, so I can not switch to another box.

ANy help would be apreciated. Remember, Im a newbie bigtime. I did a search and found a post, but it was so my head.

Thanks
-breaker

Re:I am such a fool. The username has to be the username of the account on your Windows box. And, like Jimmt said, you need to be Root in order to mount in a directory other than your home directory.

So, one more time:

mount -t smbfs -o username=windowsuser,password=windowspassword //windowspc/windowsshare /mountpoint/mountpoint

That should work just fine.

Re:oops, forgot to tell you. You have to have root (administrator) privilages to mount directories with smbmount or mount. I do not reccomend doing things as root, so here is a solution. See if you have sudo installed on your system. To do this type rpm -q sudo. If you do, edit /etc/sudoers and add your user id and match that of root. Then when you issue command that require root access you can type sudo (name of command) for example:
sudo smbmount //SERVERX/C /mnt/misc -user joeblow -password joey

it will ask for your password, type your password. After it has asked you for your password, the rest of your session you will not need to enter a password again. Not bad, and safer than SU or logging in as root.

Jim

Re:try under 2k
smbmount //SERVERNAME/C (or share name) /mnt/MOUNTDIR (or directory of your choice) -user username -password password

or
smbmount //IP ADDRESS OF SERVER/C (or share name)/mnt/mountdir (or directory of your choice) -I -user username -password password

when under win9x
smbmount //servername/c (or share name) /mnt/mntdir (or directory of your choice) -password password
or
smbmount //IP ADDRESS OF SERVER/c (or share name) /mnt/mntdir -I -password password
NOTE: you need to have a directory you wish to mount your remote system, I created a dir under /mnt called misc.

Also, a good admin utillity, not sure if its in RH7, is webmin. If its not included in RH7, go download it off freshmeat. This is the, in my opinion, easiest way to set up a samba server on Linux. Once you have samba set up, you can browse the Linux shares with windows explorer.

Re:ok, i'm trying to use the mount command and i keep getting this error

I had to use uid instead of username, but it still isn't working

session request to 192.168.0.20 failed
session setup failed: ERRDOS – ERRnoaccess (Access Denied.)
SMB connection failed.

I'm downloading samba, but i don't know how I'm going to get it over to my linux box.

Re:You could run SAMBA on your Linux box. This is pretty straightforward and there is plenty of documentation on it all over the web (for instance, samba.org (http://www.samba.org)).

Also, you could run something like PCNFS or Microsoft's Services for UNIX on your Win2k box and mount an NFS share that resides on your Windows box. I think the Samba share is probably the easiest tho.

Alternatively, you can mount an SMB share with the mount command or go to Freshmeat.net (http://www.freshmeat.net) and grab an app like Komba to mount Windows shares. It browses your Windows networks with ease and lets you mount Windows shares very easily. It just takes a little configuration on your part.

If you want to use the mount command, just type this from your terminal.

mount -t smbfs -o username=USERNAME,password=PASSWORD //Wincomputername/sharename /mountpoint/mountpoint

Sharing connections is really easy too. All you need to do is configure either some proxy or NAT software on the Windows box and then go to your Linux box and point to the IP address of your Windows box as your network gateway. I believe netcfg or Linuxconf should let you do this.

Best Answer: Just switch cdroms

Put the working cdrom in the computer with the broken cdrom. Download XP Or Better yet Buy it.

Then put it back into the computer you want to put xp on.

Re:In "Network Properties (General Tab, I think)", make sure that the login is set to "client for microsoft networks", not winlogon or anything else. Reboot.

When you restart, you will be asked for a username and password, just leave the password blank and you will not be asked the next time. You will have to do this on both computers, just press enter to get into windows.

/B

Re:Have you tried a different crossover cable? If the NICs are working fine it sounds to me like the cable is the problem… but I've been wrong in the past. See if you can't bum a cable off a friend. You did say it was crossover, right?

And I would definitely get rid of IPX/SPX… especially if you've got TCP/IP installed. They might be conflicting with each other, and TCP/IP is easier to troubleshoot (in my opinion) than IPX/SPX. But that could be just because I have more experience with TCP/IP.

Re:i am running win 98 on both computers.. i wanna network primairly to share files since it will be for business.. and also to play an occasional game of starcraft against my co worker.. the ip addy seems fine for both.. 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 for the other with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 for both.. they have no problem pinging local host.. but when trying to ping the other computer.. it will not go..

Re:guy –

What operating systems are you using on the two computers? Can you ping the other computer from the other one? To find out you need to get the IP addresses of the computers.

In Windows 95/98 type in the run line: winipconfig
Then select your ethernet card and make sure that it is getting an IP address.

In Windows 2000 type "cmd" in the run line.
At the DOS prompt type in ipconfig /all
Makes sure that there's an IP address listed.

You can also open up the DOS prompts on the machines and type in "ping (the name of the computer)" This will let you know whether or not the computer can "see" the other. Also have it ping itself… that will let you know whether or not the ethernet card in the computer is working properly.

It would really help to know what your operating system is as well as if you're trying to share an internet connection, or just want the ocmputers to see each other on the network.

Re:i'm so confused.. some say take out the tcp/ip, some people say take out other.. and what is the frame type??

Re:<< guy –

Take out the IPX/SPX junk. You don't need it with TCP/IP. Make sure the link lights are on on both NICs. What operating system are you running? Can you ping either computer? Make sure they don't have the same computer name. Some more information would help a lot. >>

Nah… remove the TCP/IP junk, make sure the frame type is locked to 802.2 on both PC's, and share the drives you want.

Re:Or you can just listen in on this thread with a real expert.

thread (http://{$MySite}/messageview.cfm?catid=36&threadid=462550)

Re:I'm no expert but here are a couple things to look for:
1. Do the lights turn on at all when you plug in your crosover cable? If not that probably means one of your cards isnt functioning.
2. Make sure they both have the same protocols setup: I just did what you are trying to do with 2 W2000 machines and I have these protocols running: client for Microsoft Network, File and printer sharing for M. Networks, NETBeui protocol, and TCP/IP.

What operating systems are you using?

good luck:)

Re:thank you balt.. i'll catch up on some reading while i wait..

Re:I'd recommend checking out this article (http://computers.cnet.com/hardware/0-1016-414-1802-1.html) until someone else comes along that can help you. Skim through it and see if perhaps you missed a step.

I'm not sure how good it is, though.

Edit:

"In Windows Explorer, right-click the name of the disk (or folder, or printer) that you want to share, then select Sharing from the menu. That brings up the Sharing tab in the disk's (or printer's) Properties dialog box, where you can specify what access you want others to have. "

Did you do that?

Re:i have the IPX/SPX, NetBEUI, and TCP/IP installed..

Re:I'm really not a network guru, but wait long enough and someone will help you out.

In the meantime, do you have an IPX or TCP/IP protocol installed?
