Synchronize with Desktop Laptop [briefcase] [folders]

Q: I want to do is to my favorites and My Documents folders to sync between my WinXP laptop and WinXP desktop. The two are networked and everything. I tried the trunk line, but would like some folders circumvent the briefcase as synchrnize possible.

Any suggestions?

Is there any way I can do it w/o buying the software from Beyond & compare?? My laptop has win2k pro and my desktop has XP Pro on and they're networked.

Could anyone please explain what this means and how to use it??

Re:Whenever I travel, I synch my laptop Favorites, Documents, and certain data files with my desktop via the network. It is pretty simple – I just use Explorer/Network, and drag the folders I want to the laptop, over writing what is there.

When I return, I reverse the process and include some email folders as well.

If you are not netted, you can use a flash memory USB drive as a high capacity "sneaker net." Even if netted, they make great backups for that stuff.

Re:Beyond Compare from Scooter Software (http://www.scootersoftware.com/) has been working beautifully for me for several years. You can create different types of sessions for specific directory structures on the two machines. You can specify what file types to include, what file types to exclude, apply rules for time differences, etc.

Re:On Winxp I don't think that shares "everything" I think stuff under c:\documents and settings\ doesn't get shared…. maybe a few others. You may have to add some folders if you want that stuff. -TAL

Re:Well to fix it I disabled then re-enabled file sharing for the drive. Then I disconnected then remapped the drive….now it works.

I am wondering if I just clicked "OK" instead of apply the first time I went through the sharing process.

Re:i was able to share all my folders and files by sharing just the drive. hmm… i dunno whats up with ur OS. i dunno if it makes a difference, but i have simple file sharing enabled.

I'm only trying to share a second hard drive that has only data on it.

It seems that I have to enable sharing on each folder separately.

Q: I have a P4 2GHz here, and it is obtained from the sludge, in other words, everything is made with a delay. The letters have slowed down as I type, the opening is slightly delayed folders . it seems some process hogging all CPU-juice, and I would appreciate a program that the processor level of excitement could bring and what processes to obtain, so to speak. Opinion 0.

Re:I agree with guy (even though he seems to like ME, he is usually a pretty smart guy………..:D ).

I would do a scandisk and defrag also (might have to do it in safe mode as ME not being able to complete a defrag in normal mode is a very common complaint and not a sign of a serious problem). I have seen seriously fragmented hard drives have slow access times also.

Re:Gawd I wish I had a dime for everytime I heard some smeghead call WinME slow. I'd be Bill Gates rich. WinME is NO DIFFERENT than any other windows program, that being said, you need to know when you install it, what features you need and what you dont need. Then its simply a matter of installing them and running it. I have had my Windows ME workstation here at home run for two years…yes I said TWO YEARS, without a crash! That being said, the first thing I would look for is the "three finger salute," (Ctrl-Alt-Del) and see whats running at the time you do it. If your not sure what each program is, copy the ones your unsure of onto a piece of paper and look them up on either Google.com or Annoyances.org. They usually have something on programs people are unsure whether they need running or not. Also I might look for the usual suspects, i.e. Gator downloader, Real Player, Comet Cursor, NetDevil, etc etc. if you happen to find an offending program that hogs your cpu or memory time, kill it and go download Ad-Aware6 and if your comfortable with setting up registry key deleting programs, try out SpyBot Search & Destroy. I run both on my box and havent had problems with either. Just remember to keep them updated with the newest definitions and you should be able to eliminate any problem programs in no time.

Re:ME is notorious for making fast processors seem slow, I believe they never did fix the issue that where if you leave it on for a length of time it uses memory blocks and then does not free them so after a while it starts relying heavily on the page file.

Re:I found that disabling System Restore altogether prevents the PCHealth thingy from backing up a few hundred MB in the background while creating a restore point.

I thought ME had close to the same TM that 2k and XP did. I don't really know since I never used ME. Just so my reply's not totally useless, here's (http://www.niresoft.com/tm.asp) a freeware TM for ME. And please, upgrade as soon as possible.

It is one Exe file nothing to install. Put it on your hard drive and drag a link to a spot of you choice.

Run the proggie. In few seconds it will show you all the computers on the network, MAC addresses, pings, shares, and more (make sure to look at the Options Mneu, and check all the options thta you need).

If you have Software Firewall that all the computers are on the Trusted Zone.

Yah, GFI is an extreamly good tool.

Q: Hi, im running win2k pro and I mysteriously lost the ability to drag and drop. Back to the trash, folders or other applications i cannot drag and drop!?

Best Answer: Do you have the taskbar locked? I believe that was one of the controls that stopped reordering.

Right click on the taskbar and unlock it to check (this is not the same as auto hide)

Q: using linksys router setup home network for two PCs both running win2k. created username and password on each machine. used to log on each other. I can only access the folders that allow access for everyone, when I try to authorize access restricted folder, the remote PC I am not asking for a username and password, give me is not accessible, access denied ” message. tried IPX, NetBEUI protocals and put in the router IP as a WINS server without success. someone help?

Re:W2K (NT too) doesn't assign IDs or passwords to a share.

There are users defined to each machine. The share point (resource) checks with it's authentication service (NTLogon on the server) to see if the user is correct (ID/pword), then it checks the ACL on the resource, to see what rights the user has (Read, write, change, etc..)

Re:This is a peer-to-peer network. I use GUI (windows explorer) to connect. I'm using the same ID and password for the shared folders. Are you suggesting me try diffreent ID/pwd? i guesss i'm logging in the two PC w/ same ID, I will try change one of them.

Re:Not a network problem. W2K passes over the current logged in credentials, unless you specifically tell it connect as some other ID. If the ID/password don't match at the target (share) then you should get a prompt. Are you using the GUI to connect or command-line?

The SHARE that you're connecting to, has an Access Control List, of who's allowed to connect through that share. If the folder that is shared is on an NTFS formatted drive, the folder can also have an ACL, seperately from the share.

Based on what you said, I would check:
1. Are the IDs identical?
2. Are the passwords identical (case-sensitive)?
3. This is peer networking, right? No domain or Active Directory?

Q: I want to set up a user in my Windows XP Pro system so I can see my shared folders from another PC access. How do I set one up, so they do not appear on the welcome screen?

Or is there another way to access to shared folders without creating a user name that matches the user on the remote system? That is how my Windows 2K system.

The remote system can run any flavor of Windows.

Re:Thanks. I had an older version of TweakUI that only showed "Always show Administrator on Welcome screen" with a check-box when I highlighted Logon!
That's why I was confused.

Once you create the user name and password, etc in computer management/local users

Go to the TweakUI program and highlight LOGON. In the window to the right there will be all users with check boxes that say:

Show "Administrator" on Welcome Screen
Show "Whatever Name" on Welcome Screen

Just check the box or uncheck to show or not show. That's it.

Re:Try turnning off the welcome screen in user accounts. That will get rid of that screen all together.

Re:Go here (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp) and download the PowerToys for Windows XP.

The TweakUI program will let you select which user names to display on the Welcome Screen or not. You will not need to edit the registry and can change many other settings as well.

Q: I have all the folders and files in a folder for all files containing specific text.

What to find the best way to do that?

It would be nice to be able to choose which folder I want to search all files in the subfolders that the text would somehow show so I could edit them.

Any contain suggestions?

I've done it a dozen times and it doesn't ever find the text I'm looking for. I know it is in .php and .html files that I have.

Plus I have read that in WinXP the search for text function has a bug that MS knows about.
