Q: I try a Unix hard drive was an external drive to open. is there a way to attach to an IDE channel in an XP box to open the files?

if I do not assume that the disk format will not be difficult to correct?

Best Answer: Disk 0 (first drive) error indicates that the first drive in the computer have errors. Seems to me that you are familiar with BIOS. When you boot up the system, does it show the hard disk on the list as detected (it should show the capacity of the drive)?

With running windows setup, looks like it detected your drive. It should give you several options to install. Select the one where it allows you to create the partition and format.

If you have a windows 98 boot disk or msdos, download a disk diagnostic utility from the manufacturer of the hard drive. Boot the computer with a win98 or dos, and run the diagnostic. This should give you a good report if the drive is indeed good or bad.

Re:using knoppix could be helpful for this.

Re:Originally posted by: guy
If its ext2 or Reiserfs, you can read it from Windows.
http://sssup1.sssup.it/~pit/reiserfs.html

Have you used that, or was it the result of a google search? It hardly looks usable to me, but I may not be understanding it.

I've used ext2fsd: http://sys.xiloo.com/ or http://sourceforge.net/projects/ext2fsd/ and it works well. All you have to do is load the driver from the CLI then mount the partition to a drive letter and two commands and you're off, and you can read and write from any windows application.

Re:If its ext2 or Reiserfs, you can read it from Windows.
http://sssup1.sssup.it/~pit/reiserfs.html

Re:If it's not FAT or NTFS (read only) your best (only?) bet is to put it back in the "unix" box, then export it as a Windows share via Samba.

Re:You'll need to be more specific, by Unix do you mean Linux, Solaris, AIX, OpenServer, Tru64, etc? But in general, there's no unix filesystems available for Windows for a few reasons. MS won't develop any, the MS IFS development kit costs way too much money and it's a huge PITA to write one without it.

Re:Originally posted by: guy

Originally posted by: guy
Depends what file system was used. If it was an external drive, there is a fair chance it was formatted FAT32. Plug it in and see. If not, then it should be easy enough to reformat (losing all the data of course)

i wasn't aware that unix uses FAT32…

"Unix" is a pretty generic term.
Linux at least, can use FAT32. It's not the native filesystem of choice, but it works.

Re:Originally posted by: guy
or connect the external hd to a windows computer and share it.

Use the smbclient on linux to connect to the share.

sorry should have made it clearer, we're not the most unix savvy people on the world. is there way, if its not formatted in FAT or NTFS, that we could access the data form the XP GUI? am I wrong to assume that it would be formatted in something other than FAT or NTFS?

Q: I went from a VIA KX133 chipset mobo a KT333 one. Using the same hard disk as before. Well, I think Win98SE not like what happens every time is like my wallpaper comes up. I have this problem since I use the new VIA drivers installed from the CD.

Looks as I may have to do a reinstallation. Question: If I run 98SE setup CD, it is possible to restore the system files, or should I reinstall from scratch and install? I know its a basic question, but remarkably this question had never before come for me. Thanks in Advance.

Best Answer: Have you tried asking your question in MSFN forums' Win9x section? They've always been able to help me with my 9x related questions…

http://www.msfn.org/board/Windows-95-98-…

Re:Even though it may be fun to reload and reorganize your hard drive, it's really not necessary, so long as you have copies of all the drivers for all the hardware in the machine.

Just go into the registry and delete the HKLM–>Enum key. Yep, the whole thing. It contains all the data on your hardware configuration.

Once you've done this, exit and reboot. When it comes up, you'll get several "new hardware found" messages and it will likely run through the New Hardware Wizard. As long as you've got all your driver disks in front of you, you should be done in no time.

I've done this at least 4 times. Every one has been painless.

My $.02
guy

Re:You really have nothing to lose. Back up the hdd and re-install 98. If that doesn't do it, format and re-install. The second option is the best but since you have to re-install anyway, I'd try the first one in case you get lucky.

Re:I remember that I was having problems once booting my computer – came up with a "STACKS" error. I had to reinstall. I did this by booting up with the Win 98 SE startup disk, and then installed Win 98SE again, over the top of the previous one. Fortunately, all my data was fully retained after the installation. Can't guarentee that it'll work perfectly for you, but it looks like it's your only option.

PS. Your CD drive will not show up in safe mode, it's normal. You'll have to resort to backing up files on either another hard disk, tape drive or the good ol floppy.

Cheers

Re:OK. But if I do a reinstall over the existing installation, what are some potential problems?

As far as backing up data, well I can't even boot into windows without crashing. And in safe mode, for some reason, my CD-ROM and burner don't show up??

Re:Yep. Wax the drive before the install. Back up whatever you can if possible. I have only ever sucessfully made it through a mobo swap once with Win98. (Went from an Abit BX-6 to Abit BH-6 Raid.) Most of the time, Windows pukes on the new hardware.

Re:You can install over the previous version keeping your files intact, but it is highly recommended that you do a fresh install on a clean, formatted hard drive.

Q: Ok, I have some old PCs with Windows 95 and I want the OS to switch to 98. My question is how can I erase everything from the hard disk, so all I have with the new system is 98. It is also possible to keep the drivers for my CD-ROM, or will they be removed?

Re:<< Ok then. how do I format my hd? or is this given as an option during installation? >>

If you have a 98 boot disk or can boot into your win 98 CD, they both have the format command in there. In the boot disk, all you do is while you're in the dos prompt just type: format c:

If you use the win 98 CD, make sure your bios is set to boot from CD ROM first. Load the disk in, restart and when it asks you if you want to boot from hard disk or CD, choose CD. The next menu should be something like:

Start Windows 98 Setup
Command Prompt with CD Support
Command Prompt without CD Support.

Choose Command Prompt with CD Support. I forget if it places you in the CD ROM Drive when you;re in the dos prompt. anyway, if you're not in the CD Drive, change directories to it. now go into the win98 directory. if your CD ROM has drive letter D then it would look like this: D:/ cd win98

Inside this directory, you'll find the Format.com program. now just type: format c:

Also like guy said, if you're current setup is fat16, i think the if you just start the 98 setup program, it might ask if you want to format as fat32. I don't remember. Anyway if it doesn't, follow the above methods.

Re:Ok then. how do I format my hd? or is this given as an option during installation?

Re:I use fdisk and then i boot from the cd

Re:the win98 boot disk should have drivers for your cd-rom so you can install. you can get a win98 boot disk from http://www.bootdisk.com.

Re:Precautionary note: Make sure you download the drivers for your hardware components. If you have a CD-writer, burn them to a CD, or store them in a separate partition (if you have one HD), or on a separate hard drive.

If you just format your whole hard drive, everything will be deleted. If you want to split up your HD into sections (to keep data separate from OS, in case you have to reinstall or format later), you'll need a boot disk with FDISK and CD-Rom drivers:
http://content.techweb.com/winmag/columns/explorer/1999/1025.htm

Here's the article to partition your HD: http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;q255867

Here's some drivers you can be sure you'll need:
Video Card drivers
Sound Card drivers
Modem (if any)
RAID (if any)
NIC (unless it's popular)

To get started for the driver hunt, start at http://www.drivershq.com.

Good luck!

Re:Windows 98 should be able to boot from the cd if your hardware supports it. Otherwise, you would have to use a windows 98 boot disk, which contains generic cd rom drivers that will get you through the install. Same story with the windows 95 boot disk (if you don't have windows 98). All you really need is dos with cd rom support. The setup routine will probably give you the option of reformatting the hard drive, because you are most likely running fat16, and windows 98 supports fat32. Windows 98 should include the proper cd rom drivers.

Best Answer: Don't touch the drive (I mean don't initialize it, don't format it an so on) if you want to recover data from it. Then download and install on the other drive data recovery software and specify the drive in question as a target for the recovery, then see what it brings.

If you have a PC then I suggest you connect the drive to the PC, download and install ReclaiMe data recovery software at www.ReclaiMe.com on the drive of the host computer and try to recover data from your drive.

Re:windows saw my drive once and it didn't have a drive letter, turned out it wasn't partitioned nor formated(high level)…..so ran fdisk, and format, and bam, it all works great now……..they dont' play nice together…..linux and windows that is……

Re:If your Mandrake partition is ext2/3, you can download a Windows utility to fetch your files from it.

Re:Thanks I got it in my thick head now.

guy

Re:It doesn't assign a drive letter because it can't read it. As far as Windows knows, the partition is empty.

Samba doesn't read Windows volumes, the FAT and NTFS file system modules do. Samba is used to attach to SMB (Windows) networks.

Re:Thanks for the reply and I understand what you are saying but I dont understand why it wont assign a drive letter, if both OS were on the same drive would it assign a drive letter to both partitions?
It probably dont make a whole lot of difference but I want to install KNOPPIX on a partition on the HD that has the mandrake on it and I cannot seem to figure it out as the instructions that I have for KNOPPIX you have to boot the program from the CD rom drive and I donot seem to be able to do that and navigate to the right Hard Drive for the install..

guy

Re:windows 98 can't read the file system used by linux. you can read windows file systems on linux though using samba.

Re:tj22 –

Here's the thread in case you're interested. Scroll down to find thorin's second post in the thread.

http://{$MySite}/messageview.cfm?catid=27&threadid=450585

Re:I agree – loose cables tend to be the most frequent "cause" of such thing.

Re-plug every power & IDE-connection on the HDD as well as the mobo – that should help .

Re:guy –

It is very possible that a cable could have worked loose if the machine has been moved around. Make sure you check that out before purchasing a new drive.

If there's data that he wants to preserve, there was a thread on ways to attempt to revive a harddrive temporarily to try and recover data from it just recently in one of the forums. (Like putting it in a zip lock bag and throwing it in the freezer for a couple of hours. No kidding!) I can try to dig that thread up for you if you'd like, or maybe someone else here remembers seeing it.

Re:I am guessing it is bad because no one was inside this computer. It is not mine but a friends, who doesn't know much about computers and never cracked the case. Looks like I will have to replace the hard drive for them.

Re:You only get this message if the BIOS doesn't see the drive. As before, check connections, jumpers, and power.

Re:Yeah – guy has got the right idea. fdisk won't be able to see the HDD before the BIOS does.

To the best of my knowledge, there's no Virus that could possibly cause you your problem. It's most likely that you have either mis-configured the HD (i.e.: it is not set to master), you got a bad IDE or power-cable, or your IDE-controller is bad.

That's about all the possibilities. Short of the actual drive being bad, of course .

Re:make sure disk it set to master
check BIOS. – make sure the BIOS can find it.

dave

Re:Very doubtful that it's a virus.

Could be, as you said, a bad disk or loose cable. Could also be a bad IDE cable (I've had those before), loose or bad power cable, or possibly a bad IDE controller on your MB.

First thing I would do is try a different IDE cable and a different power connection from your PS. You can also try using the secondary IDE channel.

Can you hear the drive spinning?
There is also a way to do this before installing the OS? Thanks.

EC

Re:If you are thinking of a future dual-boot setup, partitioning may be an option to consider.
Although you can always squeeze out another parition with tools like Partition magic.

Re:i have 2 partition in case I dont want to format the entire harddrive perhaps just c:?

Re:I wouldn't make multiple partitions. Just have one.

Re:I dont partiton with 2k..it isnt worth it at all.

Re:Why partitioning is not necessarily worth it. (http://www.{$MySite}/guides/viewfaq.html?i=43)

Try that one.

Re:I cannot seem to find that particular faq…can you point me in the right direction. THanks.

Re:There is a FAQ that talks about partitioning. I recommend you read it and then ask specific questions. After all, all you can get frin these questions are opinions.

It worked and everything is good now but it took about 2 hours to load. It went through a process of about two hours before it started the normal OS to load.

1. What was it doing? The only thing I can figure out is how to extract the wax. Files.

2 cabin. Is there a step I missed that this will speed up next time?

Thx

Best Answer: to boot from cd you have to put the cd into the drive! besides, once loaded you no longer boot from cd, so go into setup and change boot from cd to boot from hdd… poof done~

Re:do a search for smartdrv.exe . you can do what bozo said to do with the autoexec.bat/config.sys.. all i did was copy it to my win98 bookdisk and run it manually at the dos prompt.

Re:Hmmm
I tried to run it from the I386 folder but it wasn't in there.

I ran a search here and on the web and couldn't find anything about this. Can anyone give me a link to more detailed instructions?

Thx a lot

Re:There might be a copy of it on the W2K CD – I can't remember. Usually, you use the version that comes with whatever version of DOS you are using to boot. In your config.sys, you need an entry device=himem.sys and in your autoexec.bat, just put a line that says smartdrv or you can just run smartdrv from your DOS prompt.

Re:Yes, it gave me an error and told me to run smart drive but I didn't know how. Can you explain?

Thx

Re:That's about normal since you didn't have smartdrive loaded. (Disk caching)
Load it from a DOS prompt next time before doing the install.

Re:remove your sound and modem cards, fdisk a 2gig partition for w98 and a 6gig for w2k, format both fat32, install w98, then w2k install, hit f6 at the very start of the install of w2k "when it ask", install the ata100 drivers and it should continue.
DL sp2 update asap and when all is cool, start installing your cards one at a time back.
get PM and finish sizing up the rest of your drive.

Re:Ok, so ill upgrade to the latest bios and ill reformat prior to installing the OS. Ill let you know how it goes. Thanks again

If anyone has anymore suggestions please dont hesitate to mention it

Re:Before installing a new OS, it makes sense to ensure that all your hardware is installed properly (no loose cards or cables) and upgraded to the latest BIOS or firmware drivers. Immature BIOS and firmware revisions can have all kinds of bugs, so without having installed the latest versions, the kind of quirky problem that you are having would be impossible to properly diagnose.

Upgrade your mobo BIOS, and if you're still having the same problem, I will offer alternative approaches.

Re:hmmm, first thanks for the quick reply

1. Ok, its a brand new Western Digital 60 gig 5400 rpm hard drive.

2. When i installed Windows 98 at first, it formatted the WHOLE hard drive before the installation

3. I have a Transcend Ali magic chipset DDR board. There is a newer bios but is this the real solution?

Anymore responses?

Re:What's the size of the hard drive? Something tells me you have an outdated motherboard BIOS, which forced you to format the drive below its full capacity, and Win2k is complaining about that.

CopyAnyGame v3.26 – Easily Copy Games to your Hard Drive
Re:"now, wouldn't that mean, when i copy an audio cd, all i'm doing is copying the wav files?"

Actually, no. An audio CD's encoding structure is different from a data CD. An audio CD is clustered 2352 bytes at a time, while a data CD is clustered 2048 bytes at a time.

So, the solution for now is burn audio CDs at 4x with your Samsung. You could try upgrading your Samsung to a SCSI CD-ROM to shorten the data travel path. My guess is that you will be able to burn audio CDs at 8x by upgrading your CD-ROM.

Thanks,
Sun

Pass Your Driving Test
Re:it isn't the burner though. i use cd creator 4, and when I go to copy disc, it says something to the effect of my cd-rom drive not being able to sustain a high enough data rate. this is when i go to copy a audio cd only. so perhaps the cd-rom drive is just to slow in ripping audio? but am i actually ripping the cd when I copy it?

my logic says this. when I create my own cd's they're wav files. when i pull up an actual audio cd, the tracks show up as wav files. now, wouldn't that mean, when i copy an audio cd, all i'm doing is copying the wav files?

again, if i'm just copying a data cd, it'll take it straight from my cd-rom drive at 8x. it'll only do this when i'm trying to copy a audio cd.

Once all the data is cached to my HD, it burns it at 8x just fine.

Restore-Deleted-Files.com – Serious Data Recovery for Your Hard Drive!
Re:Yeah, that should be fine. What I was attempting to communicate there was that the entire computer, from the motherboard bus to the recorder itself, needs to be configured properly for faster recording and highest maximum sync transfer rate.

There could be a lot of reasons why your writer is not reaching is maximum potential. Here are a few other things I would suggest:

1. It may be necessary to write audio at slower speeds than those you can achieve for data, since writing CD-DA audio requires streaming more bits per second to the recorder.
2. Close all unnecessary applications such as screen savers, anti-virus programs.
3. PC power management makes PC slower and thus it may result in buffer underrun. Disable the power management or delay the power saving time.
4. Try a different brand of recordable disc. TDK seems to have the best compatibility across hardware brands.

Good luck!

Thanks,
Sun818

Study Smart, Not Hard
Re:Tekram SCSI should be okay. My brother uses that brand to burn at 12x. The bottleneck could be your IDE CD-ROM transferring data to the SCSI burner. If you do not already, try putting the CD-ROM on its own IDE bus.

Thanks,
guy

Delaware Defensive Driving Online
Re:It could be a few things. Obviously, the data rate is not high enough. What kind of Samsung 48x drive do you have? Is it IDE or SCSI? And what kind of SCSI card do you have?

My SCSI card is a cheap Adaptec ISA 1540CF SCSI. My HP 8x SCSI would CD-COPY at 4x, but would crap out at 8x. Once I used a modern scsi card, the problem went away.
I believe the whole game is installed to the hard drive, it just uses the CD/DVD at startup to verify it's there. So you won't see any speed increases, but it is annoying to have to have the DVD in the drive.

I use a mini DVD image. It's a small file that you mount with something like Daemon that makes it think the real DVD is in the drive. There may be patched noDVD .exe, but with the mini image I just leave it mounted and the mini-image doesn't need to be updated with each new BF2 patch.

So just google miniDVD or minICD (depending what copy of BF2 you own) BF2… should be easy to find.

Yon normally find those images at gamecopyworld!
