Q: OK, now that my Aopen food, the next step is removed, the Intel Celeron 1.4.

The heatsink / fan is not quiet. Anyone run fanless, with only the heatsink? The reason I ask is because the 92 mm intake fan on the Whisper is right above the CPU.

Otherwise, some small and easy to find quiet heatsink / fan combo should I use?

I is small because the CPU is a slocket and points sideways. Too big and blocks the slot.

Or a memory I can hack the 3 pin connector on the Intel fan? Or can I just get a new fan for it?

EDIT – see next post.

Re:OK, how about the 5V hack? On the 4-pin to 3-pin adapter, would that be black to black, and red to red? Picture here (http://www3.sympatico.ca/eug/TualatinFan.jpg).

The reason I ask is because the Silent PC Roundup (http://www.silentpcreview.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Sections&file=index&req=viewarticle&artid=57&page=1) seems to say that a 5 V Intel heatsink/hack does quite well. No need to buy a Panaflo.

Re:It seems to start every time. It does have that second fan too fortunately.

Re:I think the thing you have to be careful of in undervolting a critical fan such as one in the PSU or for a CPU is that the fan will consistently start at that voltage. For example, I've used a lot of L1A's at 7v, but occasionally I've run into one that didn't always start at 7v. Obviously, this could be a disaster in a PSU.

Re:OK thx people. Right now I'm just running with the 92 mm fan alone and no 80 mm fan. But I'm turning off the computer between uses because the case is getting a bit warm. Noise is OK (although not silent).

I think I should be OK with undervolting the stock 80 mm fan. (Not a great fan but better than my Aopen. Globe or something?) I just need to get more 4–>3 pin adapters. If it gets to me then I'll stick in a Panaflo or something, but I doubt it because the drives are actually louder. I'll also put in an undervolted Sunon 80 mm case fan.

Knowing what I know now I guess I could have modded my Aopen, but I figure the Whisper was only $45 anyway and seems like a better design that makes for easy undervolting of the 80 mm fan. I hear (pun intended) that the Antec TruePower is slightly quieter, but it was 60% more expensive. Dunno if it is easy to undervolt the 80 mm fan though. Anyone know?

As for the CPU, it definitely seems OK with a 7V retail fan.

Funny, my last CPU was all about overclocking. Just the opposite with this one.

Re:You should be just fine running that 1.4 Celeron with a 7-volted retail HSF. Those CPUs run real cool.

I just finished setting up a 1.1A Celeron, OCed to 133FSB using the retail HSF, 7-volted. Max CPU temp whille running Prime95 was 44°C. Ambient temps here is about 75°F right now. THe heatsink is just barely warm down near the base of it.

If you want an even quieter solution you should look at a Thermalright SK-7 or SLK-800 with a 7-volted Panaflo L!A on it. That'll cost you another $34-40 though.

Re:I've modded two Enermaxes. I removed the 92mm fan entirely (covering up the opening with an aluminum mesh filter) and replaced the 80mm with a Panaflo L1A. I had no increase in case temps. Of course, what you get depends on other aspects of your system, but I think the interior fan is just a gimmick and probably produces more turbulence than air flow. This setup is pretty quiet, although as I mentioned in your other thread, not as quiet as a Seasonic. It's the difference between a 2000 rpm fan and a 1500 rpm fan. Doing the same mod and undervolting the L1A should produce a very quiet PSU. (I haven't undervolted mine, so I don't know what might happen to case temps, but my Seasonic at around 1500 rpm never speeds up.) In modding PSU's I always run the molex outside of it anyway, so you can do exactly the same as you did with undervolting your CPU fan.

Re:Anybody run the Enermax 80 PSU fan off of the hacked 7V connector?

Even though it is quieter than my previous PSU, it's not WHISPER quiet.

I was almost tempted to unplug that fan completely and just add in a couple of 7V-hacked case fans.

Re:Originally posted by: guy
Just don't burn the Celery to a crisp!Well with the full speed fan with normal surfing, the heatsink was literally cold. Without any fan, the heatsink was quite warm. I'd say even hot.

With the 7V fan hack it's barely above room temp after some surfing and light Photoshop.

Now to run some OGR…

Re:Just don't burn the Celery to a crisp!

Re:OK. Enermax thought of everything. Jingling around in the box was a 4-pin to 3-pin adapter.

So I did the black to red trick and all is working fine.

BTW. Yellow is red, and black is black. Green is attached to nothing. Pic (http://www3.sympatico.ca/eug/TualatinFan.jpg)

Re:err wait i read you haev green, blac, and yello

yellow is rpm im prretty sure
black is ground (or negative…wahtver)
green must be pos

or look at a pinout example thing in your manual?
i konw mine has one

also you could if you wanted to chop off the 3pin connect it to molex
but its easier to buy a premade connector, and change the wires thatway

Re:You can't switch any wires if it's using a 3 pin molex. However, if you have a 3 pin to 4 pin molex connector, you just need to switch the black wire that is connected to the fan's green wire with the red wire. If you don't have one, cut the green wire and connect it to the red wire.

Re:pos to yellow wire on a molex and negative to red wire on molex will give you 7v wheras normally a fan receives 12v

Re:OK, I don't think a Tualatin fanless is going to work. The heatsink gets far too warm for my liking with the CPU fan off.

Thus I must have a fan of some sort. Until I can get a new QUIET AND SMALL heatsink fan combo, how do I low voltage hack the CPU fan? It's a green black and yellow cable, with a 3 pin connector. Or is it already low voltage?

I'm using an Enermax Whisper by the way, with the 92 intake fan of the PSU directly above the CPU.

Oh, and it's certainly a discover how loud my drives are. Well, they're fairly quiet, but now with the quiet Enermax they seem much louder. I'm almost tempted to go 'Cuda IV.

Anyways I just noticed a bad system crash . it was overheating. This is more than a span of one month . So I check my heatsink clips which show that the worn .

Anyways I got more cooling cable tie pasta and gently hold it together now, ordering a new heatsink / fan like we had just wound speak.

I ring You think I damaged my processor right?
IT seems to work fine now.

Oh what do you recommend a one-slot heatsink / fan combo?

thanks ct

Re:ThermalTake's Golden Orb is pretty decent for the slot-A Athlons. I'm using one now, my 650 runs at 850 w/ a GFD and 1.85V.

Re:Running a CPU for an extended period (greater than a minute) over its aboslute maximum rated voltage and/or temperature can affect the long-term reliability and can also decrease the frequency overhead of the CPU (overclockability).

I accidentally ran a celeron 300a with 3.0V for about 45 seconds. Proir, it could reach 504MHz at 2.1V. Afterwards, I needed 2.1V just to reach 428.

Eric

Re:You may have shortened your processor's life somewhat. It depends on how badly overheated it was. Next time, check the processor when your system first crashes.

Or better yet, install a temperature monitoring system (like Motherboard Monitor). If you have any doubts right now about proper CPU temperature, return to default until you get your new HS.

Re:yeah i was worried about system.. damage everything seems to be working A OK!

Just need to order a new heatsink fan combo…

Re:I doubt you ruined your processor. They are pretty hardy.

You can use any PII coolers for your SlotA athlons.

guy – the Audigy has been proved to have inferior sound in terms of clarity, especially in the front channels. Are you trying to remember Kryotech?

guy – there's actually roughly 8.5TB, since it's in RAID 0+1 (mirrored, then striped). Even a single 3gram tube is enough to coat several (even a dozen) AMD processors with a thicker than needed layer. Unless you were getting it for someone else, but I've decided that it's better to give away some of my own, since I always end up with half the tube remaining unused when the next version comes out and I buy that.

As for the price, that sounds like a pretty good deal, unless they got you on shipping. (Heck, I just had half a pound of wires for 5 dollars shipped 2 day air for 10 dollars (15 total).)
(You said "a piece", which means same price for each.) If so, you got shafted (as you must be aware if you looked at the price on the link you gave for the fan). If you meant total, then it's a good deal. Assuming you got them both at that maxcooler site, then the price would have been 38 dollars by my count total (not including arctic silver).

The place I got my AX7 from (which I just installed a little while ago) was 29 dollars, but I like the place so I don't mind the slightly higher price. However he has the same YSTech fan for a dollar less than maxcooler, and maxcooler wants 2 dollars more for the Panaflo fan I got.

Oh yeah, and if you got the thermal compound free with the order, it's probably not real Arctic Silver, but some knockoff that has some silver content.

Re:So now the question comes…. Where is a good place to buy this or search for good places since I can find none that seem like a decent company.

Re:I sure hope you don't mean "thermal glue" literally… right? Do NOT glue your heatsink to your CPU. :Q

As for the fan to go with the heatsink, most places that sell the AX-7 offer it as a bare heatsink too, so you can pick the fan you want. There is a middle ground between the Panaflo L1A and Panaflo H1A, and it is (surprise) the Panaflo M1A. Otherwise, another great option is the adjustable-speed Enermax 80mm fan, which lets you dial up the speed you want, on the fly. Its range goes from pretty quiet to moderate, and if you have 12 fans already, it should blend in well.

Re:do you buy the AX7 with just the stock fan, or do I have to go out and replace it with a panaflo?

Re:If your MB will actually run an XP processor, I'd recommemd an 1800+ for ~$100. Same price as the 1.4 T'Bird. BUT make sure that your board is 100% compatible with the XP. I have an IWill KK266R which is supposed to be XP compatible with a BIOS update, but 80% of people with these boards report that they are unstable with multiple lockups/crashes when you actually install an XP. A 20% success rate is very, very poor, IMHO. I would advise you to post asking who actually has an XP running in your same MB. I did this and found post after post about problems with the KK266R and the XP.

As for a HSF, without a doubt, the best (and mid-priced too!) is the Thermalright AX-7. I have one on a T'Bird 1.4 @ 1.6+ and the idle temps are ~39c and 44c full load. I'm using a Panaflo HA1 (40cfm) and I can't even hear it over my Enermax PSU fan. My only gripe with the HA1 is that it doesn't have a speed (RPM) signal line. This posed me no problems, but some MB's need that signal to boot (some let you turn RPM monitoring off in the BIOS). Get the AX-7 and you will never regret it.

Re:Just buy a retail Athlon and use the stock heatsink. In most cases, that's completely good enough. Unless you're the type that really wants to keep the temps as low as possible at all times, whether overclocking or not, there's no need for an extreme performance heatsink. Aside from that, for every available heatsink, you'll find someone that would recommend it, so just asking "what's the best heatsink" won't get you anywhere really. One of the larger heatsinks, with good performance, that accepts an 80mm fan would be good if you'd like to cut down on noise, as the stock fans are somewhat loud, and you can get good airflow with less noise from an 80mm fan.

Re:Any suggestions on a good heatsink for this ?

Re:Always good to check the most current information before making a buying decision, and not depend on the comments of others.

As for the memory type needed, the type of CPU (at least till the Hammer line comes out) does not determine the type of memory needed. The chipset used is what determines that, and you can get different chipsets for different CPU's which allow you to use several different memory types. The AMD line of course doesn't use RDRAM, so you have a choice between SDRAM and DDR SDRAM there, same with the P3/Celeron, or with the P4 you have those two as well as RDRAM. Technically there's no reason any of those CPU's couldn't be used with EDO memory, or 30pin SIMMS, there's just no reason for anybody to make a chipset or board design that would do that.

Re:HOLY SCHNZZLE BATMAN!!
LoL, after going to the abit site I see that I can get much faster speed sthan I thought I could before! So now it is off to what you think the best Cpu is for this board price was….

Re:Wait so my board will take the XP processors. I thought those need DDR ram. B/c the ABIT-Kt7a-raid uses SDRAM. you sure about this one?

Re:Actually the KT7A and RAID can support even an XP 2100+, with the newest BIOS versions (NOTE: only the v1.3 of the boards can do this). Presumably if you get one with an older BIOS that doesn't support it, you could downclock it and be able to flash the BIOS to the new version, assuming you don't have a slower old AMD processor available to do it with.

Getting something along the lines of an XP 1600+ (1.4GHz) would be a better idea, as the prices are about the same, but the XP runs cooler, and you get SSE with the XP line. There's really no reason to buy a t-bird unless you have an existing board that truly cannot run an XP.

Re:Are the Panaflo H1A or a mid-speed Sunon
very loud???
My compute rhas like 12 fans currently, I am just hoping that those fans are not too too loud. Would you reccomend a certain place I can find these, with thermal glue?

Re:The highest CPU that board can accomodate is a TBird 1.4 "C", that is, 266FSB. So it would make sense to buy that, since the 200FSB CPUs seem to be all sold out now.

As for the heatsink, I recommend the ThermalRight AX-7 with the fan of your choice. This heatsink utilizes an 80mm fan, and most online stores offer several fan options for it, based on your needs: quiet, average, or all-out cooling. If your case is generally well-cooled, then you can probably get away with a low-speed fan like a Panaflo L1A, although a 1.4 is the hottest CPU you can buy, so I'd recommend a faster,m albeit louder, fan, like a Panaflo H1A or a mid-speed Sunon.
But I think its ok – as long as it stays there and the temps are ok .

anyway, can anyone recommend a quiet fan for Athlon CPU? thanks
The only review I could find was the older 60mm one, and it sucked until they put a Delta on it and it did very well. I like the performance/noise of the original Millenium Glaciator, but it looks like the 80mm Galaxy Monster is quieter and may cool better. For only $5.99, I will order three of them if they are any good! Looks like the SVC GC68 and the Galaxy are exactly the same.

My thoughts on quiet don't quite match those of guy, apparently . I find 36dB to be much too loud. Instead consider the SVC GC68 for $12.98 from SVC (http://www.svcompucycle.com), or the identical Galaxy Monster Cooler for $5.99 from Nexfan (http://www.nexfan.com/29/325.htm?181). Those two are rated at 28dBA — much, much quieter than 36dBA!

I agree this hs/f is very quiet. I used this in conjunction with a hard drive enclosure and now my server is whisper quite, I too forget sometimes when it is on.
I have two of them, and they work great. And at $18, it's a steal. My 1 Ghz T-Bird OC's to 1.4 Ghz and runs at 46c full load. Be aware that they weigh 600+ grams and only attach to the socket at two points. I've never had a problem with it falling off, but I would advise you to remove it if you transport your comp in a car (at least lay it flat on it's side, with the HSF pointing up).

If you transport your comp a lot, I'd suggest a Thermalright SK-6 (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=62&manufactory=1444&DEPA=1). Either order the bare HS and a quiet fan, or simply put an adjustable resistor in the power feed to control the speed of the "Delta Screamer". With the SK-6, you can replace the fan when it wears out, which you can't do with the Glaciator (as far as I know there are no replacement fans available).

Or Im just trolling around? New to this . please help.

Re:If you turned on the rear switch, while the PSU was not connected to anything but an HSF, normal behavior would be to do nothing. If, however, you shorted the green line to ground(any black line) according to the outlines of the "paperclip trick"(ask for it by name on google) and it still did nothing, then you may well have a problem. Alternatively, your rather nice PSU may be designed to only function under proper load. Not hugely likely; but possible.

Re:Here is what has happened…

While fooling around…I connected the HSF to the 4 pin connector. The HSF has a 3 pin tail and so, I connected it via 3 to 4pin connector. While I was reading the manual of the PSU, my son decided to make a go at it.

So, we turned on the PSU back switch. The PSU did not turn on. As I felt a growing pain in my stomach seeing that my $229.00 PSU from PP&C fan is not rotating, I got even more worried if I messed up the PSU completely altogether.

That's why I want to know if its really a peril before I call PP&C. Again thanks a bunch for replying.

- Rex

Re:You could test it seperately, as people have mentioned(short the green cable on the motherboard connector block to any of the white ones to power it on, modern power supplies should be ok). However, assuming you put the heatsink on correctly, even a totally dead fan won't kill the processor. Just watch to see if it spins up properly, if not shut down. It might crash every ten minutes, or throttle horribly; but it won't die. I'd pay more attention to getting the heatsink on correctly, that is where mistakes hurt.

Re:Well, I see more trouble in this than it's worth. There's a way you can short the 20-pin molex connector so it powers up without being connected to the motherboard, but that's usually only done to test watercooling setups for leaks. Although you can do this to test anything really, you're better off just setting the whole thing up and turning it on. It's safer too.

Re:Is the fan 3 or 4 pin? If it is thre pins, just plug it into the board and hang on tight… If it is 4-pin, you should be fine polugging it into thew connector, as long as the rest of the PC is hooked up.

You do need a TIM no matter what. The stock heatsink should come with a little pad on the bottom of it, that's the TIM.

Re:If it's a Winchester, it honestly doesn't matter, especially if you're using Cool n Quiet. My CPU when idle generates practically no heat; the heat sink isn't even warm to the touch, and that's stock cooling/grease. Even the northbridge is hotter.

Athlon64s are cool runners, don't worry about the thermal grease and all unless you're interested in serious overclocking.

Re:The retail one I got from newegg.com didn't have any thermal paste, just the heatsink/fan/CPU.

Re:Stock TIM? You mean it comes with it?

Re:The best TIM is probably arctic silver 5, but its really not much better than the stuff that comes with the stock HSF. I'd just use the stock TIM if I were you.

Q: OK, think time to reorder. When I started this process I was thinking of getting the DFI LP Mb and a x2 4400. But after seeing all this stuff Opteron im not sure. I want 4400×2 performance (in this range) and im not talking about something as cool water, exotic cooling, etc. Just do it like maybe some OC do with the normal heatsink / fan. Want it stable and not have problems.

Im going to use it for gaming (BF2, Fear, especially FPS games type) and DVD / video encoding etc.

So some CPU / MB / RAM a real good solid gaming system to get?

Ill are getting 7800GTX video card if that matters. Let me know the recommendations, like all experts for soon.

thx help

-to Vinman

Re:im going to be using the Dell 2405 i have for this new system (games etc) i am wanting to get another big display to hook to my work laptop so i can have more realestate, i do DBA work and have lots of tools, terminal sessions etc open and would like to have that. I was wondering if one of the LCD tv/Monitors would work for that well. I dont think i would be gaming on that one, maybe watch some TV/movies etc but mostly using it for Work. That 37 spectre looks cool but i just dont know if i can sit that on my desk 2ft away and work with that, think it would be to much. that is why i was thinking something close to this dell 2405 in size would work. Any thoughts on that?

Ya that 700 PS is alot, i think ill try the seasonic one , alot of people seem to like it.

So it that Asus MB and opteron 17x? or 4400×2? and what memory to get?

thx for the help and again that Spectre does look sweet.

Re:To answer that display question earlier, there isn't really anything between the 24" Dell and the 37" Spectre (http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11042448&whse=&topnav=&browse=&s=1) I've really liked. There are some new 30" LCDs on the near horizon better than the current Apple 30", but given that res, I'd stick with the Spectre (1920×1080) just so you don't have to work 3 months of your life just for video cards capable of actually gaming on these new 30" 2560×1600 panels. The Spectre will do well for your cross-usage as a HDTV.

I avoid Antec PSUs at all costs myself. If you want something really beastly to power your system check out the new Fortron (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817104015)

Re:ya that was the one i was looking at, so Ribbon any final selections ? that Asus board looks nice, you think that and what Opteron? and what 2 gig of memory? Antec has a 550 w PS that is supposed to go well with that p180 case what you think on that one? or would ya still go with seasonic 600? Thx for all the info. I want to finalize and order this week

-Vinman

Re:The extra memory by itself has help little in the past, but the GTX 512 have more than just extra memory. (http://{$MySite}/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2607)

Personally I'd just one of these (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130254) and call it a day.

Re:come on experts, help a man out need to decide on the parts and order this week so i can build during my vacation.

Re:ya i can afford the 512 probably, but is the price premium worth it? i dont mind spending money but needs to pass the cost benefit analysis standard. if its 300bux more for the 512 over the 256 what do i get performance wise?

Where to get that processor and MB? any idea on pricing?

Re:Heres my reccomendation

Opteron 165 (overclock it. It'll stay stable at 175 speeds.)
DFI Lanparty UT Ultra-D
7800GTX (could you afford the 512MB version?)

Re:no one with else with recommendations? PLease chime in i need to order this thing this week

Re:ok thx, i turned the PM on

So from that thread i can gather your on the Opteron side. So the 175 be the best bet then? I want to OC using heatsink and fan, nothing fancy like water etc.
I will get a single 7800gtx to start with prob add another down the road.

Ok ill be ordering that WD400kd i think then

Budget wise want to keep everything under 2k probably. I think that is feesible.

So that Asus board over the DFI LP expert one then?

Was thinking 2 gig (2 x 1gig sticks ?) whatever is going to run fast and stable (allowing stable OC )

Like i said box is mostly for Gaming (BF2, FEAR, etc) and DVD/video stuff and im running the Dell 2405 so would like to use this high res .

for my other ? like i said I wanted another monitor for my work laptop (dell 9100) so i could have bigger desktop and workarea (like i have now with this dell 2405 ) I was thinking one of the LCD/TV monitors 27-30 in maybe would work. This is for work stuff and probably watching TV on. I do DBA work so lots of terminal windows, IE, etc. programing. My concern would be how big can i get while its sitting on my desk in front of me before its just to big to comfortably look at.

Think thats it, reply in PM if ya want , if anyone else has any recommendations please feel free to chime in. I really want to order the computer stuff this week so it will be here by christmas so i can build the week im off.

thx
Vinman

Re:hey man, your PMs are turned off, so I can't exactly reply to you.

-I was thinking the 4400×2 processor but have seen people saying now the opetron are better and cheaper so im not sure.-
See this thead (http://{$MySite}/messageview.aspx?catid=28&threadid=1733490&enterthread=y)

-I am going to use p180 case, not sure on ps yet.-
Well, my default recommendation is Seasonic but with the odd layout of the P180 you may want to look at something with slightly longer cables than the S12 series has. I'm buying one of these myself (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817159056), but really I need to know overclocking/SLI before I can really suggest anything.

-Need to make decision on MB/CPU/Memory. video card will be 7800 gtx. Im leaning towards that WD400 gig drive, i forget the model number. think that covers all the big parts.-
The WD4000KD (http://zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=101254) is one bitchin drive.

Budget and overclocking or not.

If you want SLI, overclocking, and one awesome board I'd suggest the Asus A8N32-SLI when some more places get it in stock, but expect to pay from 210-240 for one.

If you want non-SLI, some overclocking, and more affordable:
Epox EP-9NPA+ ULTRA (http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=246557)

For budget RAM/non-overclocking get a stick or two of these
PQI3200-1024SAL (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820141234)

The sweetes RAM made
Muskin Redline 1GB (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820146023)

-Ill reuse my keyboard, mouse, speakers etc. I have 16xDVD BENQ burner (external), i have Dell 2405 i picked up recently, liking that. So if you could enlighten me as to how i should build this thing out would appreciate it-
I don't understand what you mean. Don't expect to burn at 16x with an external drive.

-Also as another aside, im also wanting to get another big LCD type monitor to hook to my work laptop (dell 9100 with 128mb ATI vid). I do database work so i have lots of terminal windows, IE windows etc and would be nice to have more up and easier to read. Any recommendations on that? should i just get another dell 2405? or would a big 27+ inch LCD tv/monitor do the job?-

This depends a lot on what you want. I need to go soon otherwise I'd elaborate.

Re:ok so is the recommendation the opteron 175 over the 4400×2? and what mb/mem ?

Re:I just got an Opteron 175 from Newegg. If you have a preferred account you have 6 months to pay for before interest. =D. Got CCBWE 0544XPMW too!

Re:Not only that but if you were planning to get a lower end single or dual-core opteron you may have trouble finding them, only a few places are still selling them for reasonable prices.

Re:as i stated, was planning on getting 4400 x2 originally, so anything around there is fine.

Re:do you have a budget? cause it also matters on which opteron processor you're getting. are you getting a 144 or 175? or something in between?

Re:ok thx
So you think going X2 route better then the Opteron OC route?

Re:The stock heatsink is actualy pretty good, my 4200+ is at 2.618ghz with the stock cooler. 51c max. I've got the dfi lanparty ultra-D, with 2×1gb of OCZ platinum. BF2 definaly runs better with 2gb of ram.

Re:Thanks for the fast responses. I was thinking another 128MB of RAM would be the next item to get; nice to have it confirmed. And a bigger hard drive wouldn't hurt either. I've only got about 5GB free at this point.

Re:Only get a bigger/second hard drive if you find you are running out of space. If you do make it an IBM 75GXP, they aren't very expensive and are the fastest IDE hard drives there are. They are available in 15,20,30,45,75 and maybe 60 gig sizes.

I'd put another 128MB of RAM in that system as priority 1.

If you don't play games your TNT2 is probably ok speedwise, you might want to consider a Matrox G400/450, they have superior 2D and some fun features like 2 Monitors. If you think you want some games try a GeForce 2MX, not as good as the Matrox for 2D, but it also has 2 monitors, albiet less mature support for it, but the GF2MX has much better gaming support.

Re:A is your system looks very good.
The best upgrade at this pointwould probably be some more Ram, ANOTHER 128mb DIMM might make a surprising amount of difference.
Given that you don't play games much, and nothing more stressful than the SIMS, you video card is probably plenty good enough. BTW, Nice overclocking on it, not many TNT2U cards make it that high.
A faster CDRW might be nice or maybe a DVD drive.
Next upgrade should probably be to add another 128MB DIMM.

Re:I say more memory and replace those IDE HD and CD-ROMS with SCSI drives. I tend to think fast PCs and fast gaming PCs are two different things so…

Re:I could see adding another 128 meg of ram.

Do you see this new tool bar? I am going to play!!Texthello

This is really cool

Re:DVD drive
Bigger HD, as in another HD
New graphics card
more memmory

in any order, the other parts are fine

Q: Is it necessary to use thermal compound or grease or a thermal pad when attaching a heatsink / fan on a socket A 800 TBIRD?

I have none of that, just wondering if it is needed or if its just something extra?

Best Answer: Retail HSF are guaranteed to be sufficient for the default processor clock speed.

Re:I waited 42 minutes. And I did take a look at the threads.

Re:Dude…you waited fifteen minutes. Anyone who has ever posted to a message board before knows they will not get an answer in that period of time. Nobody wants to read every post and answer the same question over and over again. If you wanted a faster solution, I suggest searching the old threads where your question may have already been answered.

Re:Thanks for the help Mike, its just that I don't have many hours in the day and am always rushed. And it seems that there are lots of people that are on this forum at any time who could have answered the question, and I bet more than one person that could have answered the question read my post and simply decided against dropping me a quick hint.- That is why I had an attitude, I appologize to those that weren't one of these people, but really, why do people ignore posts and not help so so so often? Any time someone asks a question and I can help them, I do… Am I just different from everyone else?

Re:WTF??

Take the red sticker off… That is cover the PCTC(phase-change-thermal compound). You can either use that(easier to use) or scrape it off and put on a quality thermal compound.

Mike

P.S. What is up with the attitude?

Re:THANKS FOR ALL THE FAST REPLIES GUYS! I REALLY APPRECIATE ALL THE HELP, AND ALL VARIETY OF OPINIONS I GET WHEN I POST TO THE BOARD ASKING FOR A LITTLE HELP. THE RESPONSE FROM YOU GUYS IS JUST PLAIN OVERWHELMING! I LOVE ANANDTECH FORUMS AND ALL THE PEOPLE THAT ARE IN IT!

Re:hmm… well after reading a bit on this forum, is that little red sticker hanging off the edge just begging to be pulled off that eventually turns blue when it gets right to the center of the bottom of the heatsink a thermal pad? Should I leave it on?
