I just hate NN, it's crap.

to the OP, unc path is where you type \\computername\share, and if you have adaquate credentials, it lets you in.

so if my computer is named "nick" and my share is "stuff", I would type "\\nick\stuff" and (hopefully) get to my stuff.

It worked and everything is good now but it took about 2 hours to load. It went through a process of about two hours before it started the normal OS to load.

1. What was it doing? The only thing I can figure out is how to extract the wax. Files.

2 cabin. Is there a step I missed that this will speed up next time?

Thx

Best Answer: to boot from cd you have to put the cd into the drive! besides, once loaded you no longer boot from cd, so go into setup and change boot from cd to boot from hdd… poof done~

Re:do a search for smartdrv.exe . you can do what bozo said to do with the autoexec.bat/config.sys.. all i did was copy it to my win98 bookdisk and run it manually at the dos prompt.

Re:Hmmm
I tried to run it from the I386 folder but it wasn't in there.

I ran a search here and on the web and couldn't find anything about this. Can anyone give me a link to more detailed instructions?

Thx a lot

Re:There might be a copy of it on the W2K CD – I can't remember. Usually, you use the version that comes with whatever version of DOS you are using to boot. In your config.sys, you need an entry device=himem.sys and in your autoexec.bat, just put a line that says smartdrv or you can just run smartdrv from your DOS prompt.

Re:Yes, it gave me an error and told me to run smart drive but I didn't know how. Can you explain?

Thx

Re:That's about normal since you didn't have smartdrive loaded. (Disk caching)
Load it from a DOS prompt next time before doing the install.

Q: Hi there .

I get a laptop to use in college and Ill be majoring in computer science. Now, Im really excited to get into Linux since I get more fed with Windows as the days go by, but I would like to know if running Linux only on a computer that I will use in class for notes and programming would be a good idea? How many Windows specific code will I do? Unfortunately, I think most things will be Windows specific, except for Java stuff, especially when I started working on DirectX things on my own . am I correct?

Suggestions and opinions are welcome! : D

Best Answer: Which tool is best: a saw, a hammer or a screwdriver?

This is exactly what your question amounts to: it all depends on what you want to do.

Python is a extremely powerful language, in that you write very little bit of code, and a lot will happen as a result (because of all the libraries and functions happening in the background). The downside is that the code is interpreted and is therefore order of magnitude slower than compiled. With Python, you will be able to write a working program in very little time, but if this is a program that is intended to run hundred of times, and do be very fast and efficient dealing with loads of data, then it is not the best.

Java (like C#) is a virtual machine implementation. The code is compiled in some intermediate instruction set that will be able to run on any machine with a suitable virtual machine, with a slight performance degradation. Those languages are designed to be extremely robust, that is they are meant to pull trough even if you supply them with complete garbage as input, they will complain, but will not crash.

C++ is intended to be a very general and flexible language, so that you could program virtually anything. By doing so, it gives up a bit of performance in specific areas. Not as 'user friendly' as Python, not as fast as C.

Visual Basic is not purely language as such, as it implies a development environment and a BASIC compiler/interpreter. The emphasis is on the quick development of application, not necessarily on the high performance thereof.

Fortran is a scientific language. It is intended to crunch numbers, and to do so fast. It remains the most powerful language for time critical, numerically intensive computations, such as those huge meteorological models that predict the path of hurricanes (and needs to run on supercomputer at a rate that allows the prediction to come before the event actually occurs), it will be used to process huge amount of geological data to identify mineral deposits and their distribution, it will be used to design the aerodynamic contours of aircraft, model the heat flow through en engine, evaluate stress in complex mechanical assemblies. Some people may have the impression Fortran is not used anymore, which is totally wrong. There was a time where only scientists/engineers and bankers/accountants were using and programming computers. Usage of Cobol and Fortran has not reduced, it is that so many more *different* people are using computers for things that did not exist before. 10 out of 20 is a large proportion, but the same 10 against 100 is smaller. This does not mean that 10% is irrelevant, negligible, or not important.

I feel your #1 and #2 question were covered in the above. Your 3rd question answer is: all the other languages will run work and run in a different OS / hardware architecture IF they are compiled on the proper OS/hardware architecture, of that you have a cross compiler that targets the intended architecture. Unless your application makes uses of very device specific capabilities, calls resources that are unique or working differently (like trying to access a mouse right key click on a smartphone) it should essentially be portable.

Science Fair Projects Made Easy.
Re:<< Futhermore ms is a world power thats from our country hell you all should be supporting them if I remember right linux was not engineered in america >>

RedHat is an American company.

Over all I support an OS that was not started in the US and would never move its base of operations into America. Why? Because of our draconian laws. I consider this a good thing and will continue to support my OS of choice, despite their non-American roots. The US sucks for software development. Too many rules.

Super Science Fair Projects.net.
Re:guy, it's hard to say because Computer Science departments at different colleges have different ways of doing things. What college will you be attending? Most CS departments make extensive use of *nix operating systems and many actually use Linux to help teach about operating systems. When I was in college, we used SunOS(a Unix-like OS)-based Sun workstations and shell accounts on *nix mini-computers for our programming environment for most CS classes.

Linux is good for a CS student because Linux distributions come with compilers for almost every programming language. You won't have to buy a development tool to do C++ programming the way you would for Windows.

The only problem you might have is if you take a CS class that's going to be using Microsoft Visual C++ for your programming assignments. If you do, I'm pretty sure they'll have PCs running Windows in a lab somewhere you can use for Visual C++. You'll still be able to edit your C++ source on your Linux laptop. You'll just have to wait until you get to the lab to be able to compile it.

In another post you asked, "Do the classes actually consist of compiling programs and working on them, or are CS classes usually just learning and taking notes?" In most CS classes you'll mostly listen to the professor and take notes. You'll have programming assignments and projects to do outside of class. Many 1st and 2nd year CS classes have both classroom and lab time. For example, you'll go to class 50 minutes Mon, Wed, & Fri and to a programming lab 2 hours 1 day a week. The lab is run by a graduate student, and he'll give you programming assignments related to what you're learning from the professor in class.

That's what I did… Now I can run almost anything anywhere for class and at home…

The Science of Great Landscape Photography.
Re:guy,

No offense, but take an economics class sometime that covers anti-trust and then re-visit this discusssion.

You are correct that there is political and financial motivation for other tech companies to see Microsoft punished.

However, let's be crystal clear. It's perfectly legal to be a monopoly (and in the case of operating systems, most IT managers prefer it that way).

What Microsoft is guilty of is abusing its monopoly to limit competition in the marketplace. The United States has laws that specifically outlaw such behavior. Microsoft's illegal actions are *well* documented.

As far as lobbying and campaign finance goes, that's a completely separate issue (although I do see your point).

Frankly, your opinion that Microsoft should be supported because it's American is ridiculous. They blatantly and repeatedly broke the law, and they should pay for it. That's a central tenet of American justice. Furthermore, the government has tried repeatedly in the past to get Microsoft to operate within the law. They chose to break such agreements reached with the government.

Should we support Philip Morris too because they are American? It's a shame the Bush administration has directed the DoJ to not punish the guilty party, when it's very clear they have committed illegal abuse of their monopoly power, continue to do so, and plan to do so for the foreseeable future.

Computer – Internet – Social Website Monitoring Software
Re:if you are a smart and wise computer science major then you would not limit yourself to one school of thought. during your courses of study you will be taught many different ideas of computing. Some work better in windows and some work better in unix. But here some people will claim that Linux is the way to go. be cautious because when you go and apply for jobs people want rounded people. Can you do the job now with what we have. not what you think we need. keep that in mind. learn all that you can.
i would know because I am a computer science major at UAB.

Ultimate Laptop Repair Videos Collection in Hd
Re:Manly point taken I'm in college right know. I'm doing a major in information systems and accounting. At our school we have labs that are all linux and unix based and we have some that are all windows bases. Most of our c classess we programmed on a linux unix box. After that we did the rest of our c++ and visual basic on windows boxes. I like them all unix linux and ms. I even still like novell for networking file and print servers. But it just amazes me how our society attacks any successful business. Think about it the bottom line is about bringing in the revenue. In this country if you bring in to much revenue you are considered a monolopy. Ok I agree with the entire world the first ms antitrust case was justified. But the rest of these cases that sprang up are pollitically driven. What I mean by that is that most politicians have financial backers part of the politicians getting financial support was agreeing that they would lobby against ms if they were elected.Futhermore ms is a world power thats from our country hell you all should be supporting them if I remember right linux was not engineered in america. And by ms being a world power thats an americian company our government is not really going to punish them.

Beginners Computer Tutorial.
Re:guy,

In all fairness to you, allow me to elaborate.

Unlike some Microsoft fanboys in these forums, I generally don't "hate" without cause or rationale.

In this case, I have a CS degree so I'm fairly qualified to comment. The issue boils down to if a university chooses GCC or Sun's Java2 SDK for undergrad programming, the students can get their work done on virtually *any* platform of their choice.

If the school chooses VStudio, which is known to have a less than standard C++ compiler (not to mention proprietary APIs and frameworks), it could be causing its students a lot of grief. Either they use VStudio on Windows as well, or they can't guarantee their code will work on the platform the TAs use to grade.

So in this case, a person's choice can be *directly* tied to the institution's curriculum standards.

Usually, I'll jump right into the anti-trust issues, but in this case, I'll stay on topic and only explain *exactly* why my opinion stands.

guy: Yeah, I may not _need_ one, but I think it would make taking and organizing my notes much easier than on paper, since they have a tendency to disappear when they are written down, at least at times in my case, and if they are on a laptop I have them at all times when I'm programming, plus they are easily legible and I type faster than I write

Re:I don't know how CS is generally taught, but in my experience you don't need a PC in the lectures. Your responsibility in a lecture is to listen, learn and ask questions.

You will need one for any labs (which are usually well-stocked with PCs). And for homework and programming projects as well.

There are of course theoretical CS courses where a PC isn't used as much (sometimes not at all). Theoretical CS isn't nearly as popular because it's basically closer to higher math than it is to computer engineering.

As far as the warning about VStudio compilers, you don't need to worry about it unless your school has sold out to Mickeysoft.

Re:<< Thanks for the advise STaSh, I'm sure that after using it for a bit I will become familiar enough with it to use it in class.

One other question: Do the classes actually consist of compiling programs and working on them, or are CS classes usually just learning and taking notes? (trying to plan how best to use my laptop in class )

Thanks! >>

In the classes I took I probably should have taken notes. My C class especially, but I couldnt understand the teacher so I sat in the back copying code out of the book and fixing it. I did some compiling/coding, and some lectures in that class. Another class was all lecture with coding on my own time. So its basically up to the professor.

Re:I would just advise that you know your compliers inside and out. Chances are, your professors (at least with intro level, java, c++) will teach the class assuming a Windows compiler. The code is the same of course, but the mechanics of the compilers can be very different.

It is also my experience that most comp sci professors can barely turn their PCs on, much less use different compilers. Usually if you ask them questions about a 'foreign" complier, you get blank looks.

Re:Sweet Then, Linux: here I come!

Re:look at your school's curriculum. The courses required for your major will be layed out, and the year you enroll its sorta frozen as a contract for you. Just read the descriptions to see what you'll need. I really doubt you'll see any DirectX.

Re:<< I have almost no experience with Linux, but think that after you learn your way around it, it will do fine in your situation. In my experience with CS classes, the professors liked the basic unix compilers for java and c. I think those come in all the major linux distributions. >>

Re:If it requires a certain OS it is probably not worth the time or effort. Unless of course you are trying to study something specific (ie MCSE type of thing). Just my opinion. The short time I spent in school I very rarely needed a Windows OS. The only thing I can think of (besides the silly "This is how you use a computer" type classes) was a class where I could not find a compiler for the linux platform.

Sorry, that's the best I can do. 3 bigger holes, along with a lot of smaller holes like the regular monitor connection. But, the monitor is listed as dual-input, so I just need to find a cable to go from m y laptop out to the monitor with that type of connection. Any ideas? >>

That's a Sun Micro Systems compatible connector, any Sun's dealers will have a D-sub to sun adapter cable, It is superior to standard D-sub cable.
They are used for a clearer picture but when a monitor has the regular dsub and a bnc port(s) then you can use the regular connector for one computer and buy a BNC cable to use it for the other computer. You can select what port you want to use on the OSD.

edit: The shared folder on an NTFS drive if that helps anyway. Just pulling at straws now .

Best Answer: did you try this with an other H.D.D?
if i were you i would installed the HDD on a different PC
backed up the info on it
Formatted the whole HDD even MBR sectors
tare a part all the partitions and setting new ones
and tested it again

if it didn't work
i would install Ubuntu or open suse just to see if this problem is on Windows only if not i would install the old cpu and tested it again

it might not make sense but your problem is wired i guess the only way is trail and error

You need to create a user with access to the resource on the 2K box and then create a user on the 98 box with the exact same user name and password, then log in as that user.

Once you've done that, assuming you have your workgroup set up properly, you should be able to browse the shared resource.

That's what confuses me. I have all of that set. There is a user account for the W98 laptop on the W2k computer, and the W98 does log in with that account. The W98 laptop can see the W2k computer in the network neighborhood. However, nothing is listed once I double click into the W2k computer. There is no error message either, just no folders shown as being shared.

On the W2k computer, if I go into network neighborhood and check on itself, I do see the shared folder (permissions to everyone and that laptop account).

Re:My router has a built in firewall. I can block certain ports on each machine as I see fit. Don't all routers have this basic feature?

BTW – default AIM port is 5190

I'm new here, I could be wrong.

Re:yes please, that would be great

Re:you can use group policy's built into win2k or xp and make it so hes unable to run aim. or any other program that you dont want.

if you want detailed instructions, let me know

thanks

Re:With the cheapie webramp/sonicwall you will be able to filter by domain name, IP and by keyword. You can not download their content filter lists tho as it is not supported for that model anymore.
It really is the perfect solution for you AND the price is def. right

Re:Which means you can close down everything and open only what you want (like web and e-mail). You can even put a TOD restriction up so that he's not surfing at 2 in the morning. If you get a full fledge SonicWALL it will even filter web content for you.

Re:Oaf is on the money. The cheap webramp/sonicwalls at centrix.com will do EXACTLY what u are looking for and will also act as your router.

You can block everything, something,s or nothing at all, it is your choice. U just have to create the rules.

I have several PC's at work where I block their web usage completely, but let email in and out ( I have a SW Pro 200 at work)

Re:Everything meaning = unneeded services.

I'm talking SonicWALL… a firewall. Not a router.

I think you missed the part that said he wants his son to have access to the internet, so locking down everything is not really a solution for him.

As for there being a way to do this with a router/hardware, I am not sure. I've never seen a router that did it (not that I have seen that many routers )

Re:You missed the lock down everything part.

Re:I'd rather not use a time system, as the no AIM would be round the clock, as would internet.

Re:You could buy a SonicWALL. Lock everything down, put a TOD restriction up for his IP and be done with it.

Re:Im actually looking for a hardware solution, b/c I'm buying a router anyway, and software costs $$.

Re:I think what you are looking for in Parental Control Software. Check out www.cybersitter.com.

Your best bet is to have the computer in a public place in your house.

Re:Actually, I'm in the market. Can you recommend one that will do this?

Re:It helps to let us know what type of router you have.

Model, make?
