Anything you thi]]> Q: Ok, so Im ina situation where I need web design, quick to learn. Within a month I needed to develop good quality flexible e-commerce websites in a small to create. At the moment I said to look for Dreamweaver . can anyone give me the tlel and something about? or if there is no better program out there? Also what language should I learn. I want to not super flashy sites, nothing in flash, I already know basic HTML, Java should I learn?

Anything you think can help me, please let me know! Also please point me towards any and all good tutorials, FAQs or guides to Dreamweaver or languages I must learn! Thank you for your time =)

Re:Well if you have never done web design before, and you want a professional looking e-commerce site, Dreamweaver and some html/css books won't really do it alone. I think the biggest factor in e-commerce is selling the professionalism of the site, which also carries with it the trust the user has in the company and transaction.
For your time frame I would suggest buying a design template and going from there (google dreamweaver templates), which you could tweak to include the shopping cart system you bought…

Otherwise if your gun-ho about doing it all by yourself, I believe the best practice is to just grab design ideas from websites you like, see how they incorporated those designs via the source, and just implement them yourself until your happy with it

Re:maybe I put some incorrect information…first of all we already have a very expensive system which provides us with a secure and fullyloaded shopping cart system. Second off, we will be using host, I have no need to run a server myself or any such thing. What I need to be able to do if whip out basic templates for the looks of eCommerce websites…is that a ittle bit easier perhaps?

I agree. There are some very good open source options available. There are also shopping carts you can purchase which require you to pay a monthly fee to use. That may be a more viable option for you.

Re:This really is pretty hopeless. Even if you manage to get something functional, it will be insecure and easily hacked, which you DEFINITELY don't want in an e-commerce site.

But this is hard to do in a month from now, especially if you have to setup the server yourself… You don't *need* php/mysql, but it will make you're life easier in terms of updating, ex: if it's a site that sells products, it can be dynamicly generated.

But what I would suggest, if you only have a month, concentrate on html first, and leave php/mysql behind for now, once you master html/css then learn php/mysql and slowly make the site database driven. You'll want to have a local testing environment for that though.

Re:Yeah the scenario is basically that I need to be able to create and maitain decent websites. Normally frontpage quality is good enough, but we are wanting to go up a little bit higher and make it seem more professional. We may have to look for a web guy for temporary until I can learn it all though…

Re:Dreamweaver is a good HTML editor for getting page layouts together, and thats about it (in my opinion). You won't be able to create 'good quality' eCommerce websites unless you have lots of programming experience. Designing a proper ecommerce website is really lots of work since the web interface is the easy part. The large part of the work will be creating a viable database schema, designing business logic and security components.

If you have to choose a server-side language, I'd go with ASP .NET rather than Java, since Visual Studio includes everything you need and there are many web hosts that support it.

Java technology while flexible, is a bit disparate for web applications (Struts, JSP, Servlets, …), and you'll have less choice when it comes to hosting.

Both work, just a matter of preference.

But now she does it with Outlook, and ]]> Q: Recently my wife got a new laptop at work, and the IT guy talked her into using Outlook instead of Outlook Express (“It makes so much more for you, youll love it !”) . There is a and a puzzle before, and now here is a new one.

She have a digital camera for Christmas, and has been making good progress in learning to use it. She has sent. Jpgs many times using Outlook Express, but they are annexed, and open on the other side fine. But now she does it with Outlook, and getting strange results – sometimes it seems that Outlook e-mail with the attached jpgs, followed by separate e-mails, one for each jpg, but one. DAT file, which sends not open, of course. These emails have virus detection reactions activated from the e-mail system to the college our daughter lives. When we tested here by sending her laptop to my email account that extra. DAT e-mails are generally self-dumping in the Deleted Items folder in my Outlook Express (I have no interest in switching to Outlook), without even stopping at the Inbox 0.

This morning when I 2 + 2 together and asked whether it was the Outlook do, and ran a set of equations – the same set of 5 JPG files sent from OE went fine, but bombarded with Outlook as I described above.

Anyone?

Re:No, this is going directly out to our ISP. she has an account on the mail server there, and I do, so it should be a simple test situation
Re:Is her Outlook connecting to an Exchange server? Her office may have a security policy in place that prevents JPG attachments.
Re:I click the Attach button in OE, which in Outlook seems to be called Insert. Then select the jpg and click the OK button and it attaches.

I just went to her laptop and tried drag and drop. Never knew about that before.

Re:Do you attach them or just drop them into the message area? They need to be attached. I've sent literally hundreds of .jpgs using both outlook and oe and have never run into this…

Re:Since 'ease of use' is your highest priority, I suggest going with the Adaptec.

While I too am an avid Nero fan, there are settings and such in Nero that are intimidating…EasyCD is the way to go for the GF to start, then work her up to Nero!

Re:Speaking of Nero, how do you get restricted users to be able to burn CDRs in Win2K/XP?

The times I've tried, it spouts some error message that the Administrator user must assign CD burning privileges first.

Re:when I first got a burner, I used the Adaptec stuff- worked well, but had squirrely problems- sometimes all of my cd drives would disappear!! AND the thing that frustrated me the most, was that Mr. Adaptec WOULD NOT PLAY WELL WITH HIS FRIENDS :)
It always wanted to take over anything having to do with cdrom's.
Now, I have a happy symbiosis with Nero, CDRWin, and Clone cd.
Maybe the newer Adaptec software is better???

Re:i personally like the adaptec interface… at least back in 4.0 days.. 5.0 was the same i think, but more web based (using ie engine). but i only use nero cause i don't think it's too difficult to use. you'd be surprised at how many ppl can't use it properly…..
