Q: I just tried to set up a small home network consisting of 2 computers (both running XP Pro). I have a DSL modem and a Linksys router. The problem is that I have a static IP to be assigned to one of the computers to enable them to connect to the network. Ive tried to make both the IP and the one or the other always gets limited or no connectivity. Once I have an IP to connect to either one of them. Heres the problem. One has the static IP can not connect to the Inernet. Not that big of deal, but I can not get that computer on the network. It shows up, but a freakin password window appears when I try to get on the network. I did not assign a password and would not know what to do if I wanted. The part that really is pissing me off is that the network works fine from the computer with static IP. I have full access to everything. Grrrr! Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Steve

Re:Thanks! That was the problem.

Re:Make sure that the computer that you're connecting to has a user login (with password). If there are no users that have a password you'll never be able to connect (as windows XP doesn't allow remote connections on a computer with no pqassword set up). I'm too lazy to look up the link that supports this but I've seen it a few times. Password protect an account on the computer you're connecting to and then connect as that user (with that password).

guy

Re:guy,

The screen that comes up has the computer name already in the name box and it can't be changed. The second computer is named "Kids" and the name being put in says kids\guest. I have the guest account turned off. Does the same thing with it turned on. I tried changing the computer name. Does the exact same thing.

Re:make sure you're entering the correct username for the computer that you're trying to login to. For instance, if I had a windows XP computer and my username was "omegaxero" then I would login to it thru the network with the same username and password that I used to login to windows.

Re:OX,

Both systems are running XP Pro. I have tried everything as far as the password goes. Leaving it blank, admin etc…Just can't get in.

Steve

Re:What OS is the second computer running? Have you tried just using a blank password? Are both computers running the same OS or do you have a different operating system on each computer?

Re:The DSL does require a password/username. I got the internet connected on both computers. I had to switch the modem to act as a bridge. Now both are set for automatic IP assisgnment. All is well there. Everything else works…I can connect back and forth with remote administrator, internet on both, both show up on the network. I just can't access the second computer through the network. The password screen keeps coming up.

Hoss, I really appreciate the input

Steve

Re:With the normal connection, do you have to enter user/password to connect to the DSL?

You may have to enter that information into the router through it's web-based configuration utility and then have the router use DHCP to assign addresses.

Q: I am starting a home wireless network to build.
the to the question I have is whether I should discomfort “g” pci cards (WMP54G), or seen the actual speeds involved I just b PCI cards?

also I am better off for compatibility reasons Linksys cards to get the Linksys router match / access point?

thanks in advance, sorry for the newbie question 0.

Re:You may as well get the G wireless cards seeing as how you bought the G router. I'm using a Netgear router with a Linksys PCI card in one PC an Airport Extreme card in my apple. It's all working fine. I would discourage getting USB adapters. It was the first adapter I got and it was really flaky. If I moved the box it would lose signal, and oh, I just had so many problems with it in WinXP.

The difference between B and G won't make a difference in Internet, but sharing files and doing things between computers you will see a differene.

Re:I do not think that 802.11g USB is available.

The regular USB v1.1 is not fast enough for 54Mb/sec.

The 802.11g will have to be built around USB2.

I bought an 802.11g Router and I use it with 802.11b USB. When 802.11g USB will be available for reasonable price I will switch.

If you insist on a general 802.11g, you can buy the 802.11g with a removable Antenna.

Example: D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G DWL-G520 PCI Adapter. (http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=12)

For computers in close proximities it will work. For those computers that it will not work, you can buy extension coax and put the Antenna higher. D-Link sells extension cables for ~$50. You might find a Cable on the aftermarket for $20-$30 per PCI card.

Re:thanks for the info. so far i haven't found anyone making a usb wireless client yet. is that correct?

maybe i should buy a usb 'b' version for one pc to get the network going and to see how reception is. that way i won't have too much into it in case i can't make it work.

Re:I have the LinkSys 'G' Router & Laptop cards. The BIG difference you will see
is when you file share btw your computers. As noted:

If you use these cards your network will run at the slower speed…
802.11b = 11Mb/sec. Network "Speed" (Carrier transmission 2.4GHz)

This would be your network speed all around…
802.11g = 54Mb/sec. Network "Speed" (Carrier transmission 2.4GHz)

54mb/sec is fullblast btw your computers but as noted you get no
help with your internet connection.

Re:thanks for the info, this definitely makes sense to me as my pc's are scattered all over the house and in every case are below or in a desk.

ok, who makes the usb wireless clients and are there differences in performance among the brands??

looks like the linksys version is the wusb11 for $40 or so. i wonder when they will come out with a 'g' version…..

thanks.

Re:Unless your Computer is in the middle of the room and nothing is close to it you should not get Wireless PCI.

The majority of Entry Level Wireless Hardware is interface circuitry (I.e. USB or PCI or AP) and Plastic casing around PCMCIA Card. So the differences between PCMCIA, PCI, and USB are minimal.

For Laptop the regular PCMCIA is the best solution,

For Desktop (or tower case) USB Wireless Client Card should be considered as the preferred solution.

Why?

Wireless is depending on signal propagation.

PCI Wireless Client Card ends up been stuck behind the computer's case, resultant in obstructed transmission and poor performance. USB is connected to the Port with 2-3' cable allowing the Antenna to be placed above the System for better Transmission.

So why there are selling Wireless PCI?

There are few scenarios in which Wireless PCI card is useful.

Few Examples.

If you need to install good external antenna many Wireless PCI cards will allow changing of the antenna.

If the Wireless is restricted to one room.

In cubical office settings with walls that do not reach the ceiling. You can put the Access Point?s Antenna on the ceiling in the center, and it will communicate nicely with the PCI cards.

802.11b vs. 802.11g.

For Internet surfing it does mot matter since Internet broadband connection is slower than 802.11b

For traffic across Internal LAN, 802.11g is significantly faster.

General Wireless info.

802.11b = 11Mb/sec. Network "Speed" (Carrier transmission 2.4GHz)
802.11g = 54Mb/sec. Network "Speed" (Carrier transmission 2.4GHz)

Wireless Ethernet needs additional protocol over head for the transfer. In addition, it is not as stable as Wired so it needs extra processing procedures.

As a result the 11Mb/sec. of the Network chipset is translated to a much lower actual performance. Usually 4-6Mb/sec.

Few 802.11b hardware units are also capable to work at 22Mb/sec.(usually referred to as b+) it is nice if it works, in real term will yield 20%-40% more than 11Mb/sec. systems.

The 802.11g line that is rated 54Mb/sec. in the real world it yields 18-22Mb/sec.

The differences between the first set of graphs to the second represent the performance differences between 802.11b to 802.11g

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Re:Most of the download are .zip files and .exe files. Also, I noticed if I download mp3 files, they tend to "burp" more than usual. I will look for the firmware update and see if that works and let you guys know. The reason I noticed this is that I have two Windows ME systems that did this, but this a brand new Windows 98 (nothing else installed) also did the same thing, as winzip is the first thing I tried. I also (on the Windows 98 computer) tried to update Direct X and Internet Explorer. Both had the corrupt file name, so I knew something else was up.

Again, thanks for the info and I will work on it today!!

Firmware released in Dec. seemed to do the trick!!! Thanks again!!

Re:How many corrupt files have you downloaded? If you were getting corrupt downloads, you'd also have trouble browsing the internet.

Re:there is a new firmware to resolve corrupt files

Re:I have the same router with 3 WindowsME computers behind it. Never seen that problem before. You must have something configured wrong in Windows. Have you applied any of those Windows speed tweaks or anything?

Re:Are you using AIM to send or recieve these files? When I use AIM, the stuff I send is usually destroyed beyond recognition but when I used Direct Connect, ICQ, IRC, FTP, etc. I have no problems.

I an FTP server, but the ISP changed my IP once in awhile, so I should keep updating the ftp links on my webpage. AOL AIM File Sharing does not work behind a firewall. The files are too big to host it on my website (100MB limit). Any suggestions? Would be pretty cool, but a low price is okay (as long as it was paid by me and only me).

[edit]

Spent all day working on my ftp server, when I finally spoke to Cox Cable technical support to configure. They said they closed the ports and that they would each type of server activity to support. When the man disconnected (remote assistance, not telephone technical support). I came across this article after a Google search:

http: / / www.geek.com/news/geeknews/2003Jun/gee20030613020400.htm

Bastards Cox closes port 25 and 80. FTP on port 21, but the tech support guy told them to close off that port. Any idea how I can work behind this? Anyone hear anything about this Cox policy change?
If you're talking about you're capped at so many gigs of throughput a month and then you have to pay more, I agree you should be able to do what you want with it. If you're talking though speed caps of so many Kb/s I disagree. People want broadband because its fast. They can make it fast and cheap because you're not going to be using it all the time if you're surfing webpages and the like. When you run a server its capable of running under a continual load which really eats up the bandwidth so they can't afford to discount it as much. Bandwidth's expensive.

When you configure your server, just move it to a different port. Then make sure you forward that port to the IP of your machine in your router. You could drop your machine in a DMZ, but that leave you open to all kinds of port scanning and attacks.

What internal/external port do you have ftp mapped to? My problem is that I can't even ping my own machine. I can ping my local gateway, but it's as if my router/computer doesn't even exist when people outside the cox network try to ping it.

Check your terms of service, I'd be very, very surprised if they don't have anything in there about not allowing servers. As much as it may suck you use a consumer level service and if you want to run a server they want to sell you business level service for much more. Many ISPs block common ports (80/21/25/etc) for that very reason.
I suppose if the DHCP and WINS is not working, still the machines that you reboot, no network connection, but the machines that were turned on and logged into their IP addresses assigned to them and they can still send a broadcast packets find the IP addresses of other machines? I would try disabling the NT server, but unfortunately, we have many people using the server in this lab now . Any help would be appreciated.
If the is the case, I only have a 4 port router w/ 3 computers and a network printer already hooked up. You might also look at using sftp or scp. Ditch telnet and ftp whenever possible (at least in my opinion.)

Thanks

Best Answer: Go to Start > Run, type \\computername. This will allow you to access shared files on the other computer. Or, if you're asking how to take control of the other computer…Go to Start > Run, type mstsc, hit enter. Type the name of the computer you want to control, hit enter. Now login to that computer, and you have control of it.

how could they do it? sniff my password on port 5900?There are other ways around it without a password. VNC has essentially no security (by design). It's your computer; if you feel safe that's all that matters. I, however, would never recommend anyone running a VNC server wide open to the internet. It's easy enough to run it through a SSH tunnel, then it is plenty secure.

guy – I don't know about routing protocols and such, it's pretty safe to just leave port 3389 open and forwarded on the router. Just be sure you are using robust passwords and if you're extra paranoid only allow unpriveledged users to log on via remote access. You should do that anyway

I was trying to do remote assistance last night with a friend. I have been able to do it with computers that have a WAN IP, no problem. My cousin is behind a router, and we first tried using trigger port forwarding. No joy. Will I have to set up persistent port forwarding on his router (Microsoft 500) for this to work?

I was 0 for 2 last night, another friend, another router. This one I have remote administration on, a netgear mr814.
Will it work with RIP 1 protocol, or should I change it to RIP 2 or RIP 2A?
It is hard to get the folks on the other end to turn off firewalls and such consistently, but I think we had that part right. The error message I got was "Remote Assistance connection could not be established because the remote host name could not be resolved. Please try again."
Since I can remotely connect to my aunt's machine no problem, I do not think I have a problem with my router, a freebsd box with IPFW and 3389 forwarded through to my machine.

I read somewhere that the router was not the amount of connections that Azureus is trying to make, so I handle all reduced down to 50, but it still does not work. Most sites are not loaded and those who do usually halfway through timeout or load very slowly. Any suggestions? I really like Azureus, but if I can not make it Im going to have to switch. I can not afford a new router right. Does anyone have any experence with BitComet?

Best Answer: You need to forward your ports in your router's setup screen.

However, I download all the time with the yellow light from home, and max out my DSL both upstream and down. My laptop at the office has a green light and maxes out both sides of the stream as well.

Best Answer: You need to disable the Actiontec web management function or change the port it uses to something other than 80. If it has an option to block administration from the external network, you can do that to. Then port 80 should be sent on to the Linksys.

Next, you need to setup a port forwarding rule on the Linksys. Setup a rule to forward port 80 to the internal IP address of the Apache server PC.

If you can't change the port on the Actiontec then you will have to host your web page on a port other than 80.
Ten bucks says your ISP is blocking port 80. Try telling Apache to listen on a different port and accessing the site through that port. You can tell Apache what port to listen to by adding a few lines to httpd.conf. You need to restart Apache before the change will take effect. Then just put http://yoursite.com:Port#/ in your browser and see if it comes up.
Don't put out your IP just incase some dummy comes across this and wants to check your vulnerabilities…. it happened to me, I got reamed because I put mine out in a chat room, but then I just shut off my router and got another IP.
The only problem is i really need step by step help, like click here then type this. Cause honestly, i dont know what im doing. I'm in the linksys router administration, i have enabled dmz to go to 192.168.1.2 which is my computer. If you can, do you think you could tell me step by step or something. My aol instant messenger name is malakai015

Also – http://www.dslwebserver.com/ didnt help.
I tried the port forwarding, but it didnt work. Is it cause i got DMZ hosting.

Web 2.0 Graphics
Re:What you need to do is to assign a static IP to your server box. The linksys router will do both static and dhcp at the same time.
You then go into the router configuration and forward the WAN to the LAN IP DO NOT use DMZ it opens all your ports. Just forward the IP to port 80 and only open port 80 and port21 in the router. What you are actually doing is forwarding the linksys ip which is 192.168.1.1 to your server box IP
When assigning the server box IP what you do is set the router dhcp to IP with the last 3 numbers over 100. Then assign the server ip 192.168.1.10. With apache you do not have to use virtual server if you are only going to run 1 server.
guy
What you want to do is input the ip of your server in here along with 80 in the port # field. Then all requests to your router on port 80 will be sent to your PC. http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.asp?prod_id=371 this link may explain better for ya.
