Q: The 4-port Dlink is $ 30 after rebate this week at BB, but I was under the impression that the Linksys is better. I currently have a Netgear rt314 and hate when it seems random dropping HTTP packets, I am often to reset the router several times a day. Moreover, it seems that the Dlink print server, a feature that would be nice is. Does the Linksys have this too? Im looking for the Linksys BEFSR41 and Dlink DL704P. I am curious what router performs better, and especially if features such as DMZ and MAC address spoofing. I play many games and file-sharing do, so I think a DMZ is crucial. My Netgear does not have this, and it is very difficult to get a good connection with most P2P software.

Re:Got a linksys befsr41 here, I love mine, I know very little about networking to boot and I was able to set it up…but I"m learning alot
I guess that's what counts..;)

Re:Another vote for Linksys here. I have a BEFSR41 as well, and have had nothing but good things to say about it. I also use same model in clients' homes, and have had good luck with their wireless products as well. A long time ago I bought some generic router,(didn't have a generic price), and immediately after installing it I had 3-5% PL on game servers I frequent. Took it out, went back to ICS…no packet loss. ROFL

-guy

Re:<< get a Netgear RT314 or a RT311 if you can still find them. Supports port ranging and has an excellent albeit slightly difficult to setup packet filtering feature. Supports PPoE, DHCP, Static IP, Mac cloning, etc. >>

I've got a LinkSys BEFSR41 v.2 (4 port) and it does all of that.
The setup utility is easy. If you can run a browser you can setup this router.
The LinkSys documentation will hold your hand all the way through too.

I'd buy another one.

Re:guy,

Thanks for the clarification. I'll be sure to avoid Netgear products unless I hear better news.

Re:<< Have you upgraded to the latest firmware? Honestly, if Netgear routers exhibited this problem, a lot of customers would be in an uproar. So either the problem is fixed by newer firmware, it is extremely obscure/rare, or it's not the router's fault. >>

I and many other RT314 users have experienced the exact same problems and the problem is niether obscure ore rare but Netgear refuses to admit that their product might have a problem. I have spent a few hours on tech support calls with Netgear and the problem still persisted. I have upgraded to the latest firmware and that was not the solution. The RT 314 made surfing the NET a painful experience with constant dropouts and lockups. I finally solved the problem by replacing the RT 314 with a DI-704 and for the last month my network and internet experience has been a pure pleasure. On Tuesday I replaced the DI-704 with a DI-704P and the print server function is great and this router looks alot better in my rack since the cables now exit the back.

Someday when I have some time I will play with the Netgear some more and continue to hound their tech support until this problem is solved or they send me a new unit, the only problem is that the D-Link routers work so well and are easy to setup that I am having a hard time getting motivated to plug that Netgear piece of crap back in to my network.

Re:<< the port forwarding feature doesn't seem to make any difference, and either way, it still drops packets. >>

Have you upgraded to the latest firmware? Honestly, if Netgear routers exhibited this problem, a lot of customers would be in an uproar. So either the problem is fixed by newer firmware, it is extremely obscure/rare, or it's not the router's fault.

I think DMZ in theory is a useful feature, but my understanding of DMZ is that it doesn't logically apply to a NAT + private IP LAN. A private IP can be either static or DHCP from the router; it doesn't really matter from a TCP/IP standpoint.

Unless these SOHO routers implement DMZ as transparently forwarding *all* listening ports to the private IP DMZ host. DMZ also implies any outbound packet filtering rules are neglected as well (for routers with firewalling capabilities).

I use port forwarding myself in a Compaq router, and it works fine. Port forwarding isn't for the uninitiated, but I think it is the correct solution to this problem. In fact, as an aside, I've even (software) forwarded a forwarded port to a VMware guest OS, and it still works.

I do own the D-Link DI-704 router, but don't use it with a broadband connection so I can't vouch for its DMZ implementation.

Re:the port forwarding feature doesn't seem to make any difference, and either way, it still drops packets.

Re:<<

<< D-Link routers support port ranging, so it basically supports any application you can setup. >>

The Linksys befsr41 also supports port ranging. >>

Right, I'm just saying maybe the term DMZ is being misused or misunderstood.

For the DMZ host, do these SOHO routers really mean that they'll automagically forward every incoming port to the private IP DMZ host? Because it seems like some users expect DMZ to do just that.

I'm referring to the traditional role of a DMZ host in a firewalled network.

Re:<< I have the rt314 right now and that is my problem. It doesn't have a DMZ, and it drops HTTP packets, forcing me to reset it a couple times a day. >>

Actually that rt314 does have a dmz feature they just don't call it dmz. In the lists where you forward your ports for to a specific ip there will be one ip address line that you cannot specify a port in as it already says default there that is the dmz just put the ip of your dmz machine in the line with default in the port list and you should be wide open.

<< D-Link routers support port ranging, so it basically supports any application you can setup. >>

The Linksys befsr41 also supports port ranging.

Re:Isn't the issue how DMZ is being used?

If you want an internal machine to expose open ports/services to the world, doesn't the internal machine technically require a public IP, and routing between the Internet and itself? And DMZ just means that firewall does not do packet filtering to/from that host.

Otherwise, you're just doing NAT + port forwarding, even if these SOHO routers call it DMZ.

D-Link routers support port ranging, so it basically supports any application you can setup.

Re:<< Its all about the BARRICADES >>

Me likum Barricade too!

Re:SMC features all the bells and whistles, and everything works great, best router in my opinion. Its all about the BARRICADES

Re:I have the rt314 right now and that is my problem. It doesn't have a DMZ, and it drops HTTP packets, forcing me to reset it a couple times a day.

Re:Forget those, and get a Netgear RT314 or a RT311 if you can still find them. Supports port ranging and has an excellent albeit slightly difficult to setup packet filtering feature. Supports PPoE, DHCP, Static IP, Mac cloning, etc.

Re:<<

<< So how well does the DMZ on the Linksys work when you have it up? >>

well….i'm still trying to get it to work as it will not work while i have dhcp enabled for some reason. >>

Basically yeah, my friend has the 1st generation Linksys 4port router… DMZ only works with DHCP disabled, static ip addresses on each PC and also entered dns, gateway ip. Didn't have to do much of anything else.. DMZ works good. I know it works cuz the PC that is DMZd can use netmeeting (call and receive) and xfer files. DLINK sucks for dmz… no matter how you try it, some routers work and some don't.

Re:<< So how well does the DMZ on the Linksys work when you have it up? >>

well….i'm still trying to get it to work as it will not work while i have dhcp enabled for some reason.

Re:So how well does the DMZ on the Linksys work when you have it up?

Re:<< I have had 1 experience with Linksys and DMZ works perfectly (had to disable dhcp and assign static ip). I have had experiences with a few Dlink routers and DMZ did not always work, neither does port forwarding, no idea why. >>

so you're saying that in order to get DMZ to work with a linksys router you have to disable dhcp and assign each machine a static ip, right? then just specify which machine is the DMZ host? i could never seem to get DMZ nor port forwarding to work with my linksys router.

Re:I have had 1 experience with Linksys and DMZ works perfectly (had to disable dhcp and assign static ip). I have had experiences with a few Dlink routers and DMZ did not always work, neither does port forwarding, no idea why.

Re:is the DMZ on the Linksys more effective than the Dlink then?

Re:Dlink print server works pretty well, it has DMZ but works 50% of the time, it has MAC cloning feature and pretty easy to setup, it has a RENEW IP FOREVER feature. The interface is easier than Linksys, but the Linksys seems to have more advanced features that aren't really used.

Win2K Pro desktop (latest fixes, patches, sp2, etc) 977 503 Win2K-Pro Dell Laptop (“”) 977 503 Plugged-in RT314
-TCP/IP Netgear, NetBEUI, File / Printer parts, and the client for Microsoft Networks installed on both.
-Both have a static 192.168 addresses.

What I want to do is sync at least the documents (it seems to work) and my Outlook 2000. Pst file between the two. So, has anyone done this successfully? I assume you just put the folder where your. Pst file and run it as an offline folder to share? Or is there a better way of doing this.

Addtionally, I setup my mas in the same way, but she uses Pegasus Mail, you think I would do exactly the same?

And there is another way to utiltize this built-in synchronization (Offline Files) without setting up an MS Share folder / file you want to synchronize the two? In terms of security, the less the shares of the better .

Thanks!

Personally I would just share it, make sure my permissons are set correctly and access the file itself from the other computer. Trying to sync a .pst file accross a LAN or WAN can get time consuming IMO once it starts to grow. You also have to remember to update it in one location before you use it in the other because if you change both, information in one is ultimatley going to be lost unless you manually open both and transfer the information yourself through Outlook, .pst files cannot be merged.

I do know when doing this, you will not be able to open the .pst from theat the same time from both PC's while they're connected to your network.

In other words, no I don't know of any other way than what you already thought of.
The computer port B is connected to the local acct LED lights and green. I figure the cables are ok, because both computers on the Internet can use, but after searching NETGEARs site and I can not find, nor can I think of a solution to this problem, so Im turning to you for help. let me know if more information is needed and I will take care of. Thanks to anyone who can help. We are obviously in a very non-computer related issues, so the firm is counting on me to do. thanks again.

Re:This is a common situation that occurs a lot of time. When using Hardware Router, each computer can use the Internet independently, but you don?t really have a network, and in most cases, it has nothing to do with the Hardware. My suggestion, forget about the Internet for few hours, actually disconnect your WAN input, and go over all the setting (especially over the sharing, and user accounts, etc.) and make sure that you have a Network. Once you have a Network connect back the WAN, and have a good time.

If ypu need some pointers log here, and look for Win2000 parts.

Q: I wonder if this is true about the Netgear RT314 router or not? I do not think so because I thought it was 300 meters by 300 + feet.

Any help is very appreicated
Thanks

Re:My RT314 is not centralized. One PC has only 6FT of CAT5 while the other PC has about 150FT of CAT5. No problems at all!!!!

Re:i am on cox@Home thru a cable modem

Re:Hmmm i cant join any online games on my retail quake 3 area now. It worked before. Hmm what do yall think is the cause of this ?

Re:Ya, you won't be able to tell. i can't.

Re:well all i need it as is 100 feet so that should be fine i think.
Right?
Not much slow downs either right?

Thanks

Re:if you want, at the end, you can attach it to a switch (which will act as a repeater) so you can extend it further than 300 ft.

Re:the limit is 100 meters, which is 300 feet and change. the limit is node to node. you can exceed the 100 meters node to node, but you will suffer with incredibly slow speeds. this is (fast)ethernet standard.

Q: I tried my RT314 router to work with my charter cable to get. I have the system exactly as described on the Website for charter.

CPU router can talk, can talk to CPU cable modem (with router missed). Both Cat 5 cable modem working CPU.

Anyone have any ideas?

Netgear tech support is horrible!

tech support wire (http:// ($ MySite) / messageview.cfm? Catid = 38 u0026 threadid = 567 561)

Any ideas would be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Re:possible problems with spoofing ip addresses is that the RT314 has built-in DHCP Server built in so (if Charter checks for your ethernet MAC address) then it maybe getting the wrong computer's ethernet MAC address.

I assume that Cable is "always" on… meaning no dial-up necessary like DSL? For DSL, RT314 has to dial and log onto the account before internet access is established, i.e. the computer cannot dial up behind the RT314.

Re:Try power cycling both the router and the cable modem at the same time. The cable modems needs to learn the mac address of the router and power cycling both will cause the router to broadcast it and the modem to grab it.

Re:reset the router to defaults and try again? make sure you put the mac address in the right format and double check?

when the router is up can you ping by IP address? (216.151.100.125 is the forums)
Can you ping by name and get name resolution?

Re:Netgear allows you to Spoof the NIC id. I did that and still no go.

Re:maybe you need to have the router "clone" the MAC address of your NIC?

what OS you running? if 9x then run "winipcfg" and write down the MAC address of your network card. if 2K/NT then run ipconfig/all to retrieve the MAC.

then go into your netgear setup and put that MAC address in…i'm not familiar with netgear but alot of broadband providers provision your service to the MAC address of your nic.

I saw your other thread in OT, you'll get lots of help here. Maybe provide a very specific description of your problem and the steps you've tried so far.

<edit> MAC address or physical address will be of the form 08-00-2C-87-3F-BD

Re:Road Runner can be funny like that

RoadRunner requires that you log in program (but not all), you will want to configure the router as if you had PPPoE (Encapsulation) and select the service type as either RR-Manager or RR-Toshiba. You will also need to enter the user name and password provided by RoadRunner. Some RoadRunner areas require that you log into an authenticated server IP address.

If you want to details on all the above, just read Chapter 4 in the .PDF manual.

Re:i don't know whether i am pppoe… i have roadrunner as my ISP..

Re:Are you PPPoE? Who is your ISP?

Re:Hmmm…. might want to put up some specs on what exactly is wrong. Did you enter in your IP address assigned to you by your ISP? Also, make sure that you entered both your system name & domain name in the router (also provided to you by your ISP).

LMK, as I probably can help …. went through setting one up for 3 of my PCs as well.

Q: I have a Netgear RT314 router, and I downgraded because the firmware of a number of bugs I encountered . Unfortunately, now it does nothing. It * seems * to be doing well, but it does. When I power on, posting, does his tests and then everything seems normal. However, no IP address given to my clients, the router, cannot be pinged, and of course telnet dont work either.
When I connect a serial cable to the console port, Im booting, heading, etc., and at some point it will initialize local and remote ports and say: Press ENTER to continue. Do more than anything, I can press any key on my keyboard, it will simply sit on the phone with Netgear there.
Been for one hour (intl call), and they couldnt tell me more than I had already tried. Im desperately here and I have my router back.

Anyone Please help!

Re:If you hammer the "enter" key, does it keep displaying "Press ENTER to continue"? If it doesn't, you might be at the router's command line interface – which means you'll need to find out what type of commands you can use.

Re:Go here my friend, the best damn place for answers on the great Netgear Box. Search for your prob, or just post. Brilliant techs and people always present and near. Tell em I sent ya!

Re:Jackal: He can't access the router using the console port either.

Re:ok, I might have a solution to your problem. I had the same problem but i have already fixed the problem. Since you could use a serial cable to access your router there is hope. By using Hyperterminal, access your router and enter your password. Once you reach the Main Menu, hit option 3, then then option 2 and look to see if the DHCP is set to server. If not set it to Server. Then esc back to the Main Menu and choose option 4 and see if the loop client is set to 192.168.XXX.XXX. If not just set your ip address that you like and then set your ISP login info. Then esc back to your Main Menu and exit Hyperterminal.

Re:Since the hardware of the netgear RT314 and the Zyxel P314 are the same. I opened the netgear and tried to find something to reset it. I found a little jumper like the cmos jumper that I shorted to try clear something I was gonna rma it anyway. Unfortunately no go…

Re:Yeah, seems such a lil thing to do, especially when you need it. I dont know, maybe ill take it with me to the states when im there in august and rma it from there. Id hate to drop it in the trash, not cause i was helped so good by them, but i hate throwing away $150 after 3 months of use.

Re:guy: What I don't understand is how hard can it be to have a little reset switch to reset the router to factory default? Linksys have that eventhought I don't like their products.

Re:Yeah, thats what i have concluded and since netgear isnt planning on supporting intl. customers with RMA's , i just picked up a linksys from a local dealer to replace the rt314.

Re:I have set tons of thoses routers and have been unlucky with a few of them. Last one was having the exact same symptoms as yours after I upgraded the firmware. RMA was the only way since everything else failed. I'm sorry.

Re:No, there is no way to access it any other way than serial console right now.

Re:But can you access it by its Web interface?

Re:I always use telnet. I hate webinterfaces. Being used to Cisco, i dont know anything else but telnet. I already called Netgear, but they dont do RMA's international.

This is what i get when connected to serial:
Bootbase Version: V1.05 | 4/14/2000 13:58:03
RAM: Size = 4096 Kbytes
DRAM POST: Testing: 4096K OK
FLASH: Intel 8M

RAS Version: V3.22(M.01) | 11/9/2000 16:05:39

Press any key to enter debug mode within 3 seconds.
………………………………………….. ……….

initialize ch =0, ethernet address: 00:a0:c5:e3:9b:f4
initialize ch =1, ethernet address: 00:a0:c5:e3:9b:f5
Press ENTER to continue…

Then i can hammer ENTER for all i want, nothing happens anymore.

Anyone please??

Re:Have you tried to Telnet to it? This is usually the safest route to take when upgrading Netgear firmware. Otherwise, tha RT314 has a five year warranty so you might want to go ahead and RMA it. I also have the RT314, flashed it to 3.25 firmware and works like a charm. The firmware you downloaded may have gotten corrupted somwhere and messed up the router.

Re:I have tried that, but it will just timeout and not send the file.

Re:When you went back with an older firmware, did you try put the older configuration file back too? 3.25 is a bit different than 3.22 — which could easily account for the sparatic problems you are recieving.

Since you have a serial cable, do a direct connection in and upload the firmware and configuration file viz xmodem (I think that's the one the router supports). You should check out dslreports.com forums for the Netgear routers, there is a lot of tips on this, so be sure to read up on it.

guy

Re:Well, mine doesnt. Or at least so it seems. It worked without a flaw for about 6-7 months, while now since a week or two, after about 8 hours (even though DHCP lease is one day) or so no traffic passed through anymore and i had to manually refresh the IP on the WAN side. Since this also was about the same time i upgraded to 3.25, i decided to go back to 3.22 and see if it was the firmware.

Any inputs on how to proceed now are still welcome.

Re:3.25 works fine for me

Re:I cant flash anything anymore. I cant connect to it over IP, nor can i get in through serial cable it seems. It just hangs dead in the water when it says press enter to continue.

I dont know what to try next.

Re:No…have you tried flashing it to the firmware that WORKED?

Re:Yes, i flashed back from 3.25 to 3.22.

Re:Flash it with the old firmware?

Q: I have a 5-6 year old 10/100mb/s Netgear wired router. No trouble at all, but I would eventually like to go wireless and I understand I can still use my old wired router now. Just wondering if I increase performance in using it wired with the newer technology or if it means only relevant to the wireless on? BTW, Im sharing a DSL connection 768/384. Thank you.

Re:Originally posted by: guy
I am running a D-link Super G network, which replaced a wired D-link network. The difference between a super G, and wired 100mb is minimal at best.

With local file transfers the difference is significant. You might see 30 Mb if your very lucky with a .11g WLAN. 80+ Mb on the wire.

Re:Thanks guys, I guess the bottleneck is my Verizon DSL connection not the router. I thought upload was supposed to be more than 128kb/s but I just checked and that's what they offer.

Re:I am running a D-link Super G network, which replaced a wired D-link network. The difference between a super G, and wired 100mb is minimal at best. This all depends on the signal strength. the line of sight computers are just as fast as the wired computers, and the ones with two or more walls between the router, and the computer are at about 50% of the wired network. Keep the router near the main systems, and you should not notice any difference. This all applies for transfers between computers, in web surfing there will be not difference at all.

Re:as far as performance is concerned wireless cannot even approach wired.

Re:The changes in Wireless Technology are not related to the Wired aspect.

The wired LAN part of the Routers is a simple 4 port switch, nothing of real interest changed there in the last 5 years.

If you want to know a little bit more about Cable/DSL Routers as Routers you can look here: Cable/DSL Routers – NAT & Ports. (http://www.ezlan.net/routers1.html)

:sun:

Re:And the particular NetGear Router I have now takes fits and such where I have to unplug the power for minutes at a time, whereas I think they are making better quality routers than they did back then, where any new router would be an improvement. I just don't want to spend the extra $ if I don't have to.

Re:This was at the middle of the page:

For Internet surfing it does mot matter whether you use 802.11b or 802.11g. In most cases Internet Broadband Connection is slower than 802.11b. However, using 802.11g for the Traffic across the LAN yields significantly faster Network.

Was that the answer I was looking for? Still doesn't really answer my question as to an old technology wired router being above or below the performance of a new Super G Wireless but using it WIRED.
