Can not access http sites . HELP [cable modem] [sp2]

Q: One of my machines running XP, SP2 can not connect to a Web page http. I tried to figure out the problem, and I can only guess that port 80 is blocked by something. But I do not see where I can find where I can open the gate up.

This is a direct connection to a cable modem, router, so its no problem. I can connect to sites from another machine without a problem when connected to the same modem (after a reset), so it seems a Windows issue.

Best Answer: try resetting internet explorer
1.-

start internet explorer then click on
tools > internet options > advance > reset

select all the options and apply
2.-
then click on the general tab > delete

then delete all the browsing history
3.-
click on connections > lan settings

and make sure that you are not using a proxy server just untick the option and apply

reboot the computer in safe mode and run them there make sure to select full scan and remove everything thatit is found

i had to clear my cache and reset my modem. the modem support told me that some times … well, i dont remember what he told me, but he said something about settings getting stuck in the modem.

after i reset the modem, it was fine.

Re:hope it is not too late, but I would check your Internet Security settings. There is a setting to only allow ssl traffic or trusted sites… etc… I would check those out first.

Best Answer: No. You will need more RAM. Basically, it is too much OS for most people's PC's at this point. I'd wait until you either install more RAM or get a new PC with Vista already installed.

Re:If you've been running your windows installation a long time without reformating there's a good chance you'll have some problems. You could always try it and see, and uninstall it if you don't like it, or format the drive and install sp2 right after installing windows. Thing is, by now all the hax0rs no about all the flaws that sp2 fixes so you're better off having it installed

Best Answer: Its a common type of scam called 419 scam. I've gotten one similar.

Don't believe emails that offer to pay you or reward you somehow for doing almost nothing. That's how they trick you.
If you respond they may later ask you for a small amount of money for "fees" or something else and assure you they will pay you even more. But any money you send is gone and you won't get anything back. They will tell you anything to get you to send money, make things up, send false documents, and offer things that they won't actually do.

And they don't necessarily need your bank info to scam you.

However you won't be able to get it from windows update cause you will already have it installed (it will register as sp2 even if its not final) and you will have to go downlaod it on a dif part of their site.

Re:Microsoft probably wants all us tecno freaks to get it first because they probably read forums such as this to get last minute feedback.Plus it will take some of the traffic off their servers when they do put it on Windows Update.I will still download it again once they put it on Windows Update because they just might make some improvements afterall.

Q: I am running WinXP Pro SP2 on my laptop. everything worked fine – I could access the workgroup and all the computers on the network (by simply typing in their name. The other day I installed IIS 5.1 asp.net development to a number. After that I no longer have access to the group or computers in the workgroup by typing in their name. No other settings are changed. I can to connect them via IP address. all shares still work, but I need the IP address. I went through the Microsoft Knowledge Base and tried to narrow down the problem. From what I made of it there is something wrong with my host name resolution. I tried deleting my NICs and I even restore the files in the folder systemroot/system32 / drivers / etc ones used to install IIS. i just dont know enough about what is wrong to solve this problem. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas on how to fix this?

Best Answer: I presume that if your computers are in a 'Workgroup' you are using XP pro. Check to make sure that you can access 'sys2' using the UNC admin facility:

Click Start>Run>type \\sys2\c$ (this can only be done on XP Pro.

If you can connect then you have an issue with your file sharing. If you cannot connect and you are running XP Pro on 'sys2' then you need to look at your internal firewall settings. If you use Norton or similar, try disabling it and try to connect using the C$ procedure above.

If you are still having issues, try opening a command prompt from another pc on the same network and ping sys2:

type: ping sys2

If you receive all packets back then its got to be a sharing/firewall issue.

If no success post back.

EDIT: Also a good thing to do is to disable 'Simple File Sharing', to do this:

Open My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View>Remove the tick out of 'Use Simple File Sharing'

Doing the above can stop issues with sharing files across the network.

EDIT 2: Try not to go down the route of running the Network Setup/Sharing Wizard, sadly when you do this it makes many unwanted/un-needed and probably less secure options on your system!! Do a search to verify.

guy – i did mean \\server, BUT both \\server and //server do not work. i need to type in the ip address for both the shares and intranet

Re:Can you ping the other computers by name, or just by IP? If you can't ping them, what message does it give you?

Re:\\IP.ADDRESS will work on a network where not all computers have the same "WORKGROUP"

Make sure they are all set on the same WORKGROUP, then your computer will know what each comp is called, and will be able to do \\COMPUTERNAME

I think thats how I solved the issue when I had it on my end.

However you are talking about the original network name share which is not a function of the Host File. The file that might help you in your case is LMHOST.SAM

In you post above you typed //server this works in the browser in order to connect to the IIs? server, I assume you meant \\server. (backward slash).

Not resolving the name is a WINS trouble.

If you have a static IP you can resolve the problem by putting entries into the LMHOST.SAM file.

i edited the hosts file and placed the ip's and names of the computers on the network. when i get home later i will see if it works. why would i need to edit my hosts file? what would cause windows from no longer automatically doing this for me?

i am also going to verify my wins and dns settings are the same as the other computers on the network – although i never manually changed any of these settings – i will confirm nothing else has changed them

Re:Check your IP configuration and see if they are using the same WINs and or DNS settings. it is apparent that name resolution is not working so it is either WIN's (Windows Netbios Names) or DNS.

Re:NTFS or share permissions. Could be something has a lock on that file as well. sysinternals has a utility to help track this.

It's not that read-only attribute on the folder though. That's a red herring.

Re:Deletion isn't all there is to my issue – the file system space in question is a temp folder that a database application wants to write to and can't.

Re:Although the read only checkbox is visible for folders it is internally ignored. "Read only" only *attributes* (not to be confused with permissions) only applies to files, not folders.

If you are having trouble deleting something look at:
Read only attribute on individual files
NTFS permissions on files or folders
Share permissions.

Being unable to delete a file/folder has nothing to do with the read only checkbox you see on a folder.

I have a greyed-out read-only check that makes it look like it is inherited, but it is not set anythere between my folder and the root.

Q: I use WinXP SP2 and Outlook 2003 SP2.

When I have my screen locked and the WinXP boot up screen saying “click on your name to” start right under my name says “3 unread emails.

I have no unread emails! Ive right clicked and clicked each folder “Mark all as read” all about 10x. Restarting the computer does nothing.

Everything otherwise function normally. No problems with Outlook or something else. : Confused: In Outlook itself, there are no unread e-mail indicators next to one of the folders. : Confused:

It been like this for a couple weeks now, the install of the OS / Outlook is only about 3 weeks old!

Nope. No VOIP. No modem drivers. No printer (yeah, I know.) No nothing! This is a 3-week old install of everything! The system in general is speedy-speedy and everything runs rock solid.

Obviously, there's a registry setting that's stuck or something.

There's no lost capability or anything like that…it's just annoying to keep seeing it!

Thats correct. The difference in Win98SE was IE5 replaced IE4, ICS was added and whole alot of patches. I can not believe that MS had the nerve to charge 50$ for the upgrade when you could get everything except ICS from Windows Update.

All I am familiar with is Service Pack 1 which adds some Year 2000 updates, enhanced hardware and software support and more for Windows 98.

Re:Well, OSR2 was a version of Windows 95. I don't think what you are asking for does exist, or someone would have posted some info. Windows 98 updated via Windows Update would be the latest version you can achieve.

OK, my bad. I just need the SP. The reason is that a friend of mine need to install a wireless network card in her lappy and she needs W98 SE but only has the first edition. Someone told me the SP would make it work.
