Also what anti static mat notice none of you? Ive been thinking about getting this CompUSA Startech-static mat (http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?pfp=SEARCHu0026Ntt=anti+static+matu0026N=0u0026Dx=mode + matchall u0026 Nty = 1 D = u0026 anti static mat u0026 NTK + + = All u0026 u0026 product_code = 50767914 = Pn Desktop_Anti_Static_Mat)
but Im not sure it worth the price.

Re:http://forums.amd.com/lofiversion/index.php/t69101.html

Re:Someone told me that Artic silver is not recommended by AMD, is ceramique just as good I don't want to void my warranty.

Re:Cardboard, and wood in general, is anti-static. The poster above is giving good advice I actually use a motherboard pad that came in a box with a MB when I need to work on chips and parts. You can't beat FREE!

Re:Is it worth my getting a better heatsink/fan? I don't overclock, I run everything at stock speed

Probably not at first.

I'd probably put your old HS&F back into your new setup, then monitor your temperatures for awhile. Your new motherboard may come with a CD-ROM containing a temp monitoring app. If not, then just download one of the several free temperature monitoring applications around on the web.

If temps are too high for your cpu then you'd spend the $35 – $65 on a better cpu heatsink & fan. I favor heatpipe coolers, such as: this for example. (http://www.svc.com/xp-90-21.html) But your cpu may need some other style.

I run everything at stock speed my number #1 goal is stability
But I betcha my computer is as or more stable than yours, & I overclock the daylights of it.

You might have fun learning to OC.

And again, a fancy mat like you were considering buying is unnecessary. An upturned cardboard box lid is good to work on, because the raised edge prevents things from rolling away.

Re:That's mighty nice of you Scott, but I'll try some Artic Silver. I planned on getting the antistatic mat to lay all of my parts onto and then work on(of course).
Is it worth my getting a better heatsink/fan? I don't overclock, I run everything at stock speed my number #1 goal is stability, this way I don't have to keep fixing my computer (P.S I do realize that it is possible to overclock and still have stability but I'd rather not bother with that, I do have respect and understanding for those who do though)

Re:anti static mat brands
Don't waste your money on a mat.

Just lay it on a piece of clean cardboard.
Strip both ends of a heavy multistrand wire, fasten one end to your case, wrap other end around your wrist with bare metal wire touching your skin. That'll ground you just fine.

taking the heatsink off the processor,
Use alcohol, the 99% stuff if you have it, on a very clean folded-over paper towel & rub off all the old remnants of insulation/thermal interface compound. That means, rub it till you can't see any faint trace of it remaining on either the cpu or the hs. Some guys use acetone, if you have any lying around (=unscented fingernail polish remover). Goal: as close to a mirror-like finish as you can get.

would you suggest that I use thermal paste?
Definitely!

Lots of us overclockers use Arctic Silver 5. I do.

I see guys on some forums mentioning a newer version called Arctic Ceramique, that some say they like better.
Some also use Shein Etsu.

Get one of those three, accept no substitute!
Buy the smallest available size, under $10, maybe under $5.
Your Anandtech profile isn't activated so I can't see where you are to suggest a source to buy it. If convenient for you, here's where I buy mine: SVC (http://search.store.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/nsearch?catalog=svcompucycle&query=arctic+silver).

Look on the Arctic Silver (http://www.arcticsilver.com/) website for instructions on how to apply it. Hint: Sparingly! Even coating! A folded-in-half ordinary business card serves as a good applicator.

When replacing your mobo, consider also removing its stock chipset cooler, and replacing it using the same Arctic Silver 5. A superior chipset cooler can be bought with the thermal paste on same order. you'll have to look into which cooler fits for you, but here's the one I use: Evercool VC-RE (http://www.svc.com/vc-re.html).

You could buy all that, including thermal paste, upgraded chipset cooler, and shipping by 1st class postage, for under $20.

If you REALLY want a thermal pad instead of thermal paste, PM your mailing address to me & I'll mail you a new one free that came with an AMD Athlon 64 cpu…it's useless to me (if I can find it).

Re:Use a thermal paste and unless you plan on doing a lot of bench work, don't bother spending the money for an anti-static mat. Just touch the PSU or case before touching components.

Best Answer: I think that your cooling would be adequate with the old fan and heat sink, however because it is old and heatsinks/fans are cheap, I recommend that you change them to a new set. You have slot 478 on that motherboard that your new CPU will fit into, I can provide a link for slot 478 heat sinks and fans back here in the U.S. If you are doing your shopping "down under" you are looking for fans and heat sinks for slot 478.
I believe that white spirits would be what you are looking for – just don't drink it.

Re:Just turn the system on and run the Prime95 toture test or any other high CPU utilizing proggie for 5 minutes then immediately turn the system off and remove the heatsink, once heated up they tend to come off fairly easily in my experience.

Re:yeah it does that loli had some on a celleron and the thing took forever to pull off lol
just keep at it

i pulled mine so hard that the celeron disengaged the socket without me pulling the socket lever
luckily its still alive

//edit
maybe get one of those flat razor blades or a knife to "cut" thru it, its not like you are gonna use it anymore

Re:Thanks for the tip. Sounds so simple, but will it damamge my cpu core? because i tried to apply a little force earlier and it seems to be pretty tough.

Re:Once u opened the HSF clip…just pull the HSF off the CPU. U should now see some pink coloured melted thermal pad on both the CPU & the HSF.

Just use some achohol to clean it. U r now ready to put in the new HSF.
Then wipe. Is this really necessary? My heatsink does not even come with a thermal pad, so I need to do this?

Best Answer: The case is designed to store the parts, because that is where they sit anyway once you build the computer. I have stored spare parts from motherboards to graphics cards to processors. as long as the components are stored in a safe fashion (i.e. so they won't get physically damaged), it should be fine.

on another note, you should follow the instructions given by the thermal compound's manufacturer, which can be found online if not included with the product. With arctic silver in particular, it is a metal based compound, so you do not want it to touch the motherboard once the heat sink is properly mounted, as it conducts electricity. also, you do NOT ever mix compounds. before you apply the AS5, you should remove the compound already on the heat sink prior to installation.

I am studying to get my A+ computer Cert, so this info should be mostly correct.

Pad Submit Worker – Make More Sales
Re:I usually do it the quick'n'dirty way – just squeeze a long glob along the middle of the core and let the pressure direct it where it needs to go. It doesn't overflow over the edges of the core much, and I always get good performance out of it. When I take the heatsink off for whatever, then I wipe it off. That method so far is keeping my 750@866 T-bird at 38C with a cheap $10 socket A heatsink. And the case is closed too.

Launch Pad Forex System
Re:<< Ok I got my heatsink and fan today and tomorrow I get my cpu and motherboard. I was reading up on the arctic silver 2 instructions on the official site, and it says that before you install the heatsink you should first spread some arctic silver over the part of the heatsink that will come into contact with the cpu to fill in the microscopic vallies. Then wipe it off. Is this really necessary? My heatsink didn't even come with a thermal pad, so do I need to do this? >>

I think its neither harmful nor necessary. I followed the instruction step per step, including getting everything degreased and sparkling clean, then spreading the stuff without using my finger. Turns out it makes no difference compared to my standard thermal grease. It wouldn't hurt to use ASII, but if you don't have it yet, I'd just use standard stuff.

PropFrog System Converting at insane numbers…
Re:I really don't think that's necessary. I prefer to put a thin layer of AS on the CPU die and mount the HSF as I normally would. Then I take the HSF off and look at where the die was making contact. You should see a clear square or rectangular AS "print". If you don't, your CPU isn't making level contact with the HS and you could end up burning your money. If everything looks good, scrape it off with an exacto knife or credit card, apply a very small amount to make up for what you lost then carefully remount just like you did before. There's no excuse for burning up a CPU in my book…
I think it's worth it to follow their instructions all the way through.
If so… I did it for reasons such as this… to show someone who doesn't know how much should be applied. I also photograph all my hardware before installing it so I don't have to pull my PC apart to get serial numbers and model numbers and build numbers and manufacture dates and revision numbers and… you get the point.

thats not a bad idea .. i think i'll use my camera phone for taking a pic of my next proc's steppings (4400+)

Re:Get some brake cleaner from Autozone that doesn't leave a residue. That's always the best stuff for removing anything that is sticky/oily from metal surfaces.

Re:if you remove the heatsink you'll have to reapply the thermal paste because you may get air bubbles trapped between the heatsink and the cpu core.

Re:also when im applying the arctic silver 5, can i remove the heatsink after it's been on for like 10 minutes? just to see if the ac5 spread enough? or will i then have to reapply the ac5?

Re:It'll never hurt to clean it up some more, if you go over it numerous times and the state of the surface doesn't change visibly then you're probably good.

That's an amateur opinion and what i'd do, may want to get a second opinion.

Q: Is it necessary to use thermal compound or grease or a thermal pad when attaching a heatsink / fan on a socket A 800 TBIRD?

I have none of that, just wondering if it is needed or if its just something extra?

Best Answer: Retail HSF are guaranteed to be sufficient for the default processor clock speed.

Re:I waited 42 minutes. And I did take a look at the threads.

Re:Dude…you waited fifteen minutes. Anyone who has ever posted to a message board before knows they will not get an answer in that period of time. Nobody wants to read every post and answer the same question over and over again. If you wanted a faster solution, I suggest searching the old threads where your question may have already been answered.

Re:Thanks for the help Mike, its just that I don't have many hours in the day and am always rushed. And it seems that there are lots of people that are on this forum at any time who could have answered the question, and I bet more than one person that could have answered the question read my post and simply decided against dropping me a quick hint.- That is why I had an attitude, I appologize to those that weren't one of these people, but really, why do people ignore posts and not help so so so often? Any time someone asks a question and I can help them, I do… Am I just different from everyone else?

Re:WTF??

Take the red sticker off… That is cover the PCTC(phase-change-thermal compound). You can either use that(easier to use) or scrape it off and put on a quality thermal compound.

Mike

P.S. What is up with the attitude?

Re:THANKS FOR ALL THE FAST REPLIES GUYS! I REALLY APPRECIATE ALL THE HELP, AND ALL VARIETY OF OPINIONS I GET WHEN I POST TO THE BOARD ASKING FOR A LITTLE HELP. THE RESPONSE FROM YOU GUYS IS JUST PLAIN OVERWHELMING! I LOVE ANANDTECH FORUMS AND ALL THE PEOPLE THAT ARE IN IT!

Re:hmm… well after reading a bit on this forum, is that little red sticker hanging off the edge just begging to be pulled off that eventually turns blue when it gets right to the center of the bottom of the heatsink a thermal pad? Should I leave it on?
