Q: I bought a 5-port switch Linksys tonight and I am having a hard time networking with my two computers. I can not get my computers to only show up in each others network neighborhoods. Please help, thanks.

Re:Thanks for replying guys. I just formatted my other computer's hard drive and am in the process of installing Windows 98 SE. Both computers will be using Windows 98 SE. After I have set everything up on the other system I will try again and post what happened.

Re:he might be getting away with just having hooked up the adsl to the uplink because both computers may not be accessing the net at the same time, but I could be wrong.

Re:Are you sure that both computers are on the same domain or workgroup names?

And how are you accessing the internet through the uplink port? Are you doing this from both computers? or jsut one?

Do your computers have different computer id's?

I thought you had to be running a ICS software before you can share the ADSL line. That's interesting. I had a friend that used a hub to connect multiple computers to the internet but would crash often. I believe this is from an IP conflict. But I'm not 100% sure.

I have both my comptuers connected to the internet running ICS. Only bad side is that one computer has to be always on in order for it to work. But other than that, no problems whatsoever. Takes about 5 minutes to setup.

Re:guy,

What operating systems are you running?

Have you enabled file and print sharing on both?
What network are you using? Windows Logon? Client for Microsoft Networks?
What protocols do you have installed?

What IP addresses and mask are you using?

I know network guys won't like this suggestion, but it is a good protocol for sharing on a small network. It does a nice job of finding other computers on any network that has netbeui running on all the systems. That way if you change your ip settings, it won't bother this protocol. Big networks use tcp/ip netbios to find other computers and their names.

Here is a link to microsoft explaining how you do it their way. In the article it tells you to put the files in "%systemroot%" That is their way of saying the 'windows' folder

I also like to configure an LMHOSTS file for each computer to speed up name resolution. The LMHOSTS file tells windows the name and IP addresses of the other computers on your network. You can find a sample LMHOSTS file by doing a search for LMHOSTS.SAM on each computer.

LHOSTS Example:

192.168.0.1 winxp #PRE
192.168.0.2 win98 #PRE

#PRE loads the entry into the name cache. You should always use #PRE.

Q: This weekend I tried my small home network using a Linksys network in a box kit. The two computers have 10/100 NICs in use, one for about 6 months, the other for just over one week, and both worked fine individually, but when I tried to network together, thats when the fun began.

What happened I had a computer on-line and tried to use the other computer to get online. The other computer that has been working individually on its own lot, suddenly can not access the Internet or an Internet program (games), and still when connected to itself. I typed in “winipcfg” and everthing it seems, but still nothing. Ive tried uninstalling and installing the NIC several times, but that did not either work. Both comps are using Win98 first edition (the same CD key, and I have a win98se disk, so I will be legit), has a machine to commit suicide because two machines are a CD-key? The second machine will see on the net itself, but I feel it is good delayed. It seems to work only in short bursts while working in some apps the internet.
I have cable and as up-grading my Norton antivirus programs via the live up-date, a burst of data will then stop . The LEDs on my cable modem you mention the problem with my job, and not the service.

Do I need to clean a registry setting somewhere on the box that has lost the ability to access the Internet? I have the NICs exchanged between the two machines and both seem to work. But now my other profession seems almost slowed, even though I once turned Netbui, ect removed. I was commissioned by Linksys to allow the Networking properties.

Beginners Computer Tutorial.
Re:Ok, I got my second box back up and working on the net. Seems there was a program in my start-up files (and don't ask me how it got there, we'll have to confront my daughter) called: "NewDotNet startup" WTF? I have no idea how this took over my internet start-up, but it obviously did. I just happened to be looking around for things to get rid of in my Add/Remove properties of the control panel and saw that friggin "Save Now" app, and the "New startup.net" app. got rid of them both and wallah, internet back and working.

Best Computer Monitoring Software
Re:Yes, I have tried removing the Nic several times, and also from safe mode as well, just to make sure there wer'nt several listed. Also removed it from within the network properties. Looked at my start-up files to see if there was sometnig hanging around there as well, and nothing. In the adaptor properties, it say's it's hook-up and all is well when I try it. And of course i've swapped nics to make sure it was'nt the nic causing it not to work.

Self Computer Repair
Re:Have you tried removing and reinstalling the network drivers on the computer that can't connect and then following the original instructions that came with your cable modem for configuring the adapter?

Web based computer repair
Re:guy, thanks for the link. I've been reading some of it. I still have a question though. Since this has all happened, I still am trying to figure out why the one box cannot get on-line when I run a straight cable from cable modem to the comp. And the comp that still works can only access internet files in a single burst and not complete downloads of larger data files when it is hooked-up directly with the cable modem?

The comp that still works is a fairly new set-up, and i'm thinking of re-formating and starting from scratch with it to see if that takes care of the slow and incomplete download problem with it.

PappaPC Computer Home Business – $100 Per Hour!
Re:A suggestion.

Several problems might exist with your configuration.
#1
Your cable modem can only receive 1 IP address. Therefore, in order to share the internet, you need a ROUTER to route the IP address to the other machines. So it would go CABLE——CABlE MODEM—-ROUTER——-SWITCH/HUB——Computer1&COMPUTER2.

#2
Your cable modem can only receive 1 IP address and will only provide that to the first network card attached to it as the MAC address of the network card was "married" to the cable modem. Therefore, in order to share the internet, you need a ROUTER capable of MAC spoofing in addition to routing the IP address to your LAN via a switch/hub.

May I suggest you go to the www.Practicallynetworked.com site to learn more about internet connection sharing?

link on how to share internet connection (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/)

How To Build A Gaming Computer For Under $1000
Re:guy, Actually I had the cable modem hooked into the Port labled Uplink, and the cables from the hub (or is this actually a switch) cabled to each individual comp. I used the "Lanbridge software" that came with the kit as the program.

guy, I did check properties on both computers and they were configured the same. When I type "winipcfg" into the Start, Run drop box, all info comes up like it should, (well if I plug one box in check it, then unplugg it and plug the other one in) the same basic info comes up, yet it still refuses to connect to the internet.

Thanks for the info. Please keep throwing ideas at me. I might just be able to get it figured out.

The Complete Computer training manuals
Re:As you are probably gathering from the articles you are reading, there must be some mechanism (software or hardware) at work to share your internet connection. A simple hub/switch is insufficient. If you don't want to buy additional hardware, you can use ICS in Win98SE, when you recieve it. However, in my experience, ICS is flakey, can be difficult to establish and can be hard to remove completely from your system if you want to drop ICS in favor of a hardware atlernative down the road.

That being said, I suggest you invest in a cable/dsl router with a three or four port switch. They are much more reliable than ICS, you do not have to have both comptuters on all of the time and they are quite inexpensive these days.

With regard to your old computer not working, if you haven't already, you should open the network properties for both computers and make sure the settings for the computer that is not working are identical to the settings for the computer that is able to connect. At least that's some place to start.

Computer Secrets Unleashed! 2009
Re:Let's take a step back.. Your original intent is to create a home network so you can share files with the two computers and get them to both access the Internet at once. Your kit came with a switch, some NIC's and a piece of Internet sharing software. This all correct?

If this is the case, your network should look like:

PC #1 with two NIC's – One going to the cable modem and one going to the switch.
PC #2 with one NIC, connecting straight to the switch.

Obviously, PC #1 would be running the Internet sharing software so that PC #2 can reach the Internet.

Is this how things are configured and generally setup?

- G

Computer Basics Package
Re:Thanks for replying. I will need to look more into this, and slowly. I read thru my booklet I received from the company that supplies my cable service, and they make mention that I should contact them if I have a home network. I just have the simple Linksys 5port hub, and don't plan on having seperate internet addresses, or any thing fancy. The whole idea was just to have 2 comps, on one cable modem for general entertainment purposes.

guy, I will be using a Linksys 5 port hub to share the connection. I do not plan on having seperate Internet addressess for each comp on the network. One comp will have Win98 and one will have Win98se. I do not have multiple addresses asigned, and don't intend to. I have the origional internet lanbridge program that came with the Linksys kit. Will this do it for me?

Jack thanks for the links, like I say, I'll read thru slowly so I at least get part of it.

I guess the thing that really bothered me is the fact that once I attempted to go on line with both comp's, that one failed to work, and when I installed the cable in just that particular comp, it still would not work, though it had previously worked just fine.
I see no mention of a router in your post and plain old Win98 does not support ICS. Are you running a proxy program? Do you have multiple ip addresses from your cable provider? In sum, how are you sharing, or should I say "attempting" to share the connection?

Q: Hi,

Im searching for a network situation for the next setup. I go to two XP systems (a house, have the other pro) that connect to the net via dial-up. I basically want the network of the two when I feel like it. The two computers are different countries, so start calling is probably not feasible given the long distance calls. So, I wonder if anyone has ideas for networking between the two computers via a dial-up connection. Is it possible to dial-up connections in Windows XP to receive? How would I do that? How do you network two XP systems via the Internet? Can you manage a system from an XP Pro XP Home system? Would a 3rd party software used in connecting these two systems?

Let me know all the details I can add.

Thanks

Re:Many of them are free in the hopes that you'll buy a premium account just like the free email services and the like, except its probably alot less load for the dns.

Re:Originally posted by: guy
Thanks for the help guys! Good stuff.

Is there anything shady about these dns providers? Why is it free? I realize services such as email are free and usually not shady but I'm just curious.

Thanks again

I've seen these things quite cheap, but not free. They probably just bust out some advertising popups when anyone tries to hit port 80 at your address or something.

Re:Thanks for the help guys! Good stuff.

Is there anything shady about these dns providers? Why is it free? I realize services such as email are free and usually not shady but I'm just curious.

Thanks again

Re:There are lots of dynamic dns services, I've used www.no-ip.com before. Register and run an app in the tray and everytime your IP changes it will update infohawk1.no-ip.com to your current IP address. Then just give your VPN software the domains to work with. It may not always be 100% accurate but it should be reasonably close. If not spend a couple bucks and get your ISP to assign you a static IP

Re:Let's say I do a VPN connection. How will I know what IP address to connect to? Like guy said, the ip addresses change each time.

Is there a way to get my system to note it's ip and then email or something?

Re:If you have the computers directly dial each other you're going to have to pay long distance. Just have both of them dial locally into the internet and stay there. Then use VPN to setup a tunnel between them. It's all built into xp & 2000 so you don't need to buy any 3rd party stuff. Check the helpfiles on VPN it's pretty easy to do.

You can setup one of them to be a dial-up server though if you want to do that.

Re:Wow, that's a good one…um…..

The problem is that with dialup, you get a different IP addy every time you connect; that makes it difficult to do anything like FTP.

Interesting question. Bump for you.

Q: I have two computers, both Windows Firewall behind. There is still a way to send the file, not to mock a firewall and file sharing settings.

Re:I suppose another option would be to use some third-party storage space, such as gspace. You could copy the files up to gspace on one computer and then copy them back down on the other computer. This wouldn't require any firewall configuration. I'm not sure how other people use gspace, but I use it with a Firefox plugin.

Re:whats wrong with using microsoft file sharing? install netbios and only bind the file and printer sharing to that if you are worried.

Re:"File and Printer Sharing" is turned on by default, IIRC. And if it is off, all you do is check one box in the firewall configuration and then connect to \\computername\c$ and copy your file. But as guy said, either you are going to block it or not, if you could get around the firewall, then that would defeat the purpose of the firewall now wouldn't it? Either open the ports or use sneakernet.

If you are worried about the security of Microsoft's file and printer sharing, there are other options. For one, you could install openssh server on one or both boxen, then use WinSCP to copy the files (and open firewall tcp port 22). The other option is, if you would also like remote control abilities, install UltraVNC and use the MSRC4Plugin to encrypt the connection and use the UltraVNC clients built-in file transfer to transfer the files (and open firewall port 5900). Both of these methods are as secure as you can get. The encryption used by ssh and MSRC4Plugin is unbreakable.

Re:In other words, sneakernet…

Re:or buy a flash thumb usb 2GB to move large file between pc without worry about firewall.

Re:If you've got the firewall on each configured to restrict traffic then the only way you're going to get traffic between them is to loosen up the firewalls. You can't have it both ways. You either open up what you need or you use sneakernet.

THX:)

Best Answer: You will need splitters for the Televisions. Hook one end of the splitter to the televisions and one end to the router. The router does not hook into the televisions.

Try this:
http://answers.google.com/answers/thread…

Dane

Re:Get a router

That's what I'm using. I have a public IP address and am splitting it up between bother computers i have here……

Re:After you install the 2 nic's on the computer with internet connection, install one nic you want access the internet. Then you need a program to setup a proxy. I use Analog X (http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/proxy.htm). Download it and read the read me. It will explain how to set it up. I started using this recently, for some reason every once and a while I have too reset my cable modem. You can use other proxy programs, but this one is free.:D I tried it since I had a nic card laying around, but soon going to get a cable router.

Re:Ah nice, so all i need is 3 nics and a really long ethernet cable….nice:)
All these technical words confuse me.!!!:)

Re:No. RJ45 connectors are the little plastic things on the ends of the cable that you use to "plug in" the cable. They come attached to the cable already. Think of the things on the ends of phone lines…..only bigger

-Tom

Re:haha ok…how expensive are those connectors of yours—like 5$ each>????

Re:The way a cable modem works is that you plug in the coaxial cable (the type that goes into your tv) and you connect the modem to your computer via ethernet cable (CAT5…..usually a grey color with clear connectors at the end). So you don't have to worry about dealing with the coaxial cable…..all you need to worry about is the ethernet cable (CAT5 with RJ45 connectors). AFAIK, you basically set it up like guy said.

-Tom

Re:can I just add connectors to the nics???? like buy them somewhere???
the cable(cat5) that youre talking about is that from normal cable tv???

Re:well, actually if you want to get specific about it. NIC's that have coaxial connectors usually cost $5-$20 more than NIC's that just have an RJ-45 connection. All you need is two NIC's with an RJ-45 connection and a crossover CAT5 cable. Then just use internet connection sharing in windows to connect both PC's to the same internet uplink.

Piece o' cake and cheap.

Re:yeah, i wish i had the money for a router now… Ah well, ill have to try out the nic way:)
Better than nothing… Can i set up a firewall 2??? not sure…
will it stress one of the computers and do i have to connect the computers with a coaxial cable???

Re:The cheapest way would be the "2 NIC way" where you basically split the connection through one of the computers. IMO, the easiest way is to use a router. It splits the connection, makes a little network in your house (for file/printer sharing if you need/want it), and acts as a hardware firewall. The drawback is that the router is more expensive as you have to buy the router and the ethernet cables (unless you have the cables already).

-Tom

PS- I have my house networked with router to split RoadRunner in this setup:

Cable modem
|
V
Router
| | |—–> my computer
| |—–> sister's computer
|—–> mom's computer

Re:Gonna write this message again…

does it put strain on one of the computers????—just wondering

—so what I need is a total of 3 nics….2 terminators to connect an extra coaxial cable…the coaxial cable—(the same one used for cable tv right?)

any software required for this???

This wont use an extra IP address???
thx

Re:remember, i want this to be as cheap as possible:)
and since I have extra nics laying around—the nic way sounds great:)

Re:couldnt i just use a normal network cable in between the computers???

Re:i think an easier way for you to go is getting a cable router. It'll share one ip across X amount of comps.

here's how i have my home network set up:

cable modem
|
router
^
cp1 cp2

both share the same ip and works very well.

Re:does it put strain on one of the computers????—just wondering:)

—so what I need is a total of 3 nics….2 terminators to connect an extra coaxial cable…the coaxial cable—(the same one used for cable tv right?)

any software required for this???

This wont use an extra IP address???
thx:)

Re:Another way is to use a router to split the connection instead of a hub. With a hub you need an extra IP, with a router, you don't.

-Tom

Re:I use the dual nic way for my dsl. It works like a champ and is super easy to setup in Windows 2k. Here is a pretty poor explanation for you. (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q234/8/15.ASP)

Re:<< So I need two nics huh??? >>
Yes

<< Will that cause conflicts??? >>
No

Re:i cant get an extra ip address… It cost 15$ more for me:(
So I need two nics huh???
Will that cause conflicts???

Re:Basically from what I've heard there are two ways to do it. You can use one computer as the main computer, and put two nics on it, then the other computer can connect to it and share internet with it. I'm not exactly sure how you do this, but both the computers would share the same IP address.

The other way I know of (which is the way I use), is to get a hub, and another IP address from your cable company (costs $5/month for me). Connect the cable modem to the Uplink port on the hub, and the two computers to two of the ports. This is the easiest way IMO, and both computers will have their own IP address.

Good Luck

Q: Hey there guys I have a great situation here.

For the past year or so, and off I have tried to solve this problem.

Ive have two computers here and last year I tried to network them.

I tried in vain through my netgear hub, the computers can not see each other, could not see each other or something. I gave half up.

Today I installed ethernet card in my main desktop, took an Ethernet cable and ran it from my second computer on my second ethernet card. Guess what? Windows XP says there is no cable is connected! WTF?!

I can not even connect to the Internet via my main desktop on the second computer! Nothing works and Im sick of it!

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Re:Ensure that you have a correctly functioning hub, ensure you have two correctly functioning cat5 cables (not crossover) and plug them each into the hub and if your hardware (NICs and hub) are functioning correctly the green lights on the hub will come on and WinXP will see the cable.

Then, configure them as the same work group and it should work. But there's lots more to try.

Re:Important For the purpose of the initial setting, disable all software Firewall (including WinXP native ICF); disable any active Virus scan or any other utility that might intercept Network Traffic.

The following Collection of Links might help:

If you are not concern about internal security WinXP has a fast simple method of sharing, no user permissions, and no passwords.

Re:Make sure both computers have the same workgroup name.

Re:Originally posted by: RyanSengara
Hey there guys I've got a major situation here.

Today I installed a second ethernet card in my main desktop, took an ethernet cable and ran it from my second computer to my second ethernet card.
This wont work unelss you use a crossover cable, thats why XP says there is no cable connected.
Regarding your problems, are you using TCP/IP?
If you have connected them to a hub, have you tried to force the NICs to 10 OR 100, Half OR Full duplex?

Re:Originally posted by: guy
have you disabled the worthless winxp firewall? that caused my my pcs not to see each other when it was enabled.

I believe I have but let me double check.

Re:have you disabled the worthless winxp firewall? that caused my my pcs not to see each other when it was enabled.

Re:but still shouldn't they be able to see eachother through the hub? I've got no idea whats goin on.

Re:both are running winxp

Re:What OS are they running?

And connecting two computers directly requires a crossover cable.

Q: Okay, this is what I want to do. I have wireless internet in my house and I connect to both my laptop and desktop.

Now, I have a Linksys router (wired) that I wanted to connect two computers to use file sharing between the two. I got them both connected and within minutes Im good to go. But how is my internet stopped working because it tries to use the Web to the address provided by the wired connection and not my wireless. Make Sense?

How can I fix this? Is there anyway I can say: use wireless internet connection, using wired connection for inner-city network.

Thanks

Re:Option 1. Unbind the Wired NICs form TCP/IP and leave them bound to NetBEUI only.

Option 2. Use TCP/IP too but make sure that the Wired NICs and the second Router are forming a separate Network (use a different subnet than the Wireless).

:sun:

Re:I did before.
I have a wireless router in my home. I want to connect to the internet through that.
I also have a wired router in my room. I wanted to connect my two computers to that and use file sharing. Now, what happens is when I enable the wire connection on both my computers, it stops using the wireless for internet. Does it make sense now?

Re:Router? Other Router???

NetBEUI can not pass Routers.

May be you should describe the exact toplogy of your Network?

:sun:

Re:I got the netbeui setup and all, but everytime I have TCP/IP enabled with it, the internet stops using the wireless and tries to use the wired network. I think I understand how it's supposed to work but it's not doing it. It's getting frustrating.

Re:I have wireless internet at my house. I'm trying to use that AND use my other router for file sharing between the two computers.

Re:I wonder were you get the Wireless from?

Under regular setting that should not be a problem.

http://www.ezlan.net/netbeui.html

:sun:

Re:How do I use the netbui to get it to work? And can I actually bind those adapters with WinXP? If so, how?

Re:The simplest way would be to bind TCP/IP as the only protocol on the wireless adapters, and NetBEUI as the only protocol on the wired adapters. Enable File and Printer sharing on the wired adapters and disable it on the wireless adapters

This will force Windows to use the wireless network for anything that requires the use of TCP/IP, such as web browsing, and will still allow the computers to talk to each other using NetBEUI over the wired connection.
