Q: I wanted to RMA this card I had back, but can not seem to call for an RMA number to find. I tired emailing them but get no response.

If everyone knows, was a response to strong appriciated.

Q: Ok, so I was on my other computer two days ago and the screen just went on Berzerk me.

Its hard to describe, but Im sure you know what I mean – I only see bits and pieces of hte screen . . Its almost like what happens when you overclock your video card to high.

So anyway, I shuyt from the computer, just think its a problem and heater turned on in about an hour . Nope same problem.

It starts out that way, when I turn the computer on and even if I go to CMOS are difficult to see anything.

So I went into Windows (Windows does not load properly, so I must now go through Safe Mode) and check the video card driver (its very difficult to navigate and look nothing like anything on the screen is too crazy as this).

The video card driver, for whatever reason, is the standard VGA adapter “and my card is an NVIDIA GeForce 2 GTS.

So I downloaded the latest detonators from my other computer, copied to CD and tried to install on the messed up computer . The first time I tried it, the screen completely black when mid installation.

So instead I tried to do a system restore . but that is not the problem either.

So I tried to install the video card drivers again and this time installation went fine, but it does not solve the problem.

I see a message on the screen at each winows starts (its hard to read) which says that the instability can be caused by the video adaptor.

How can I determine if I have this problem, the drivers changed?

But what they are saying is if your multiplier or voltage is set to high for agp or pci then you could burn up your cards, just so happens that video cards are the first to show signs. Agp is suppose to be at 66mhz, pci 33mhz.

I am not overclocking anything.

I haven't changed anything from default in bios.

CPU is Athlon Thunderbird 800MHZ

Room Temperature is normal room temperature

One fan was on the video card, one on the cpu…however, i keep the side of the case open for more ventilation

How many case fans do you have on each computer.
Considering that you have experienced problems on both computers, you should provide info about both!
CPU; are you overclocking; what is the motherboard; …..?

Re:See if the voltages are reasonably close to what they should be. Here's the official ATX spec: A multimeter or voltmeter is the real tool for the job, since an ailing motherboard can take perfect voltages from the PSU and bend them out of shape.

One thing that I dont understand is why was the Geforce not working in my new computer? (i currently have a 128meg 9800 non-pro in it)

Re:Hmm, do you happen to have a digital multimeter that you could use to check the power supply's voltages? If you don't, the BIOS should have some estimated readings, anyway. Look for a Hardware Monitoring section in there.

EDIT: the more I think about it, I wonder if your PCI and AGP bus are out-of-spec :confused: What motherboard is this?

Before I actually get to the windows screen there is no problem but once I get into it there is a problem. The loading screen produces frays but once in windows it does not until about 10-15 minutes into windows.

Re:You could buy another GeForce2 GTS used, maybe? If it needs to be that exact model, post a WTB: thread in For Sale & Trade.

Keep the big picture in mind. There's nothing wrong with spending $15 for a used GLADIAC if that's where your heart lies, but $52 gets you one of these (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=14-134-108&DEPA=1), with four times the RAM and considerably better performance and features. One reviewer is evidently using it to play Doom III, although I would go into at least the $200 range if that were my goal. Something to think about, anyway.

Re:Ok, I tried knoppix and the problem persisted in linux. So i took the card out and tried it in this computer and the problem also persisted in this computer.

This only means that the card is the problem.

So i took another pci card and put it into my messed up computer and it worked fine. Except there was a little fraying in the middle of the screen once windows fully loaded (not in cmos or while loading).

I bought the Geforce 2 GTS (ELSA GLADIAC) for $250 like 4 years ago. Is there anyway to fix the card because I really love the card and it was pretty expensive.

Re:Download a copy of Knoppix, burn it, then try to boot your problem computer from the Knoppix CD.

If that works, then I suggest re-installing Windows if you don't want to try to figure out a driver file issue.

If it doesn't work, then you probably have hardware problems.

Re:Have you noticed if the fan on the GPU is still spinning? My Ti4200 had a similar problem, and the cause was the fan just froze up.

Re:If this problem even occurs in the BIOS itself, then it sounds like your video card or motherboard AGP port/bus are having a problem, possibly a failure. Did you try re-seating the card firmly in the AGP slot yet?

If re-seating the ol' GF2 doesn't fix it, try a different video card in the AGP slot, and/or try the GeForce2 in a different computer, to determine which part is at fault.

Q: I was just playing warcraft3 when suddenly my computer crashed and would not boot back up. Does anyone know what the problem might be? I can power but the monitor just sits there with nothing coming on screen. I thought it might be the video card but I tried the vid card on another machine and it worked. Would it be the processor or memory? Someone please help.

I've noticed pushing the button and holding it for a second works most of the time.

Re:Try another power supply to boot up the mobo+ram+cpu+video card. If it boot up fine, then it could be the power supply that is broken.

If it don't, the video card has been confirmed to be working, so take out the ram and see if there is any beep. If no beep, try to observe if the cpu fan is blowing. If the fan is blowing, it is very likely to be the mobo that is spoilt.

If you have another CPU, or if you can verify that the existing CPU is working, try it with the mobo.

I this thing dual 12V rails, how do you know which one is the video card and drives? I had a 470W Enermax Noise Taker and he had a separate 12V rail and cable just for the high power video card.

If your board didn't have a 4 pin ATX connector, but had a high power requirement, you should have done a little more research before buying the Neo. Antec has great product documentation on their website. That is a pitfall of split rail PSU, especially in your case. 18a on the main 12v is still a lot of power, I am really curious about your power requirement. What kind of mb do you have? And what else is drawing so much juice? More likely is that you got a bad unit, that does happen, even to OCZ, Fortron, etc… It always works best when you know what you are buying in the first place. Sorry to hear about your problems.

If you have the right equipment, the Neo will kick some major booty.

Re:You should be able to get a Geforce2 Pro or better or ~$150. There was a GF3 Ti200 on sale for $99 :Q over Thanksgiving so if you keep your eye on the hot deals forum you should be able to find something nice.

Re:2D and DirectX is supported natively by the drivers that come w/XP. You will need to install third party drivers in order to get OpenGL.

Though you'd probably still be better served getting something along the lines of a Nvidia Geforce2 Pro. You should be able to find them on PriceWatch for under $150US.

Re:Abu are you sure that the radeon has DDR memory? The cheapest price for a 32meg ddr radeon i've seen is $275 @ PC Canada (http://www.pccanada.com), while the SDR radeon is $225. They also have the visiontek mx w/ tvout for only $170.

Also skip the radeon if your using win2k.

Re:I've had my Radeon 32MB DDR for a few days now and have been nothing but happy with it. True, sometimes it is quirky but nothing anymore annoying than some of the little idiosyncracies (sp?) I had on my TNT1 and TNT2Ultra cards.

Fog is a bit iffy at the moment, but in all the games I play I just disable it and it doesn't even affect performance.

I'm in love with the card, the 2D is a great improvement over my TNT2 and obviously the 3D is much better and the colors look alot better and saturated. Of course, I've never used a GeForce2 MX though so I can't really make a comparison, just give impressions of this one card. I'd buy it again definately though, especially for the price $130 (US price)

Re:Get the Radeon. There is no difference between the Retail and OEM 32DDR cards with the exception of probably software.

And I do agree that people tend to be very vocal when they have a problem with a piece of hardware. I'm sure that after guy switches to a GTS or whatever there is going to be one game that doesn't run perfectly.

And yes, get retail, its worth the added price. You can find good prices for lots of stuff at pricewatch. Just make sure you check if it has a good rep or not before you buy from the cheapest place (and also their shipping tends to be high when the prices get so low)

Re:What drivers are you using? What version of DirectX? In which games does fog work? Did you have to tweak the registry? In what games does it work? Are you running them in OpenGL or Direct3D? Frankly, you're the first person I've heard to get fog to work.

Fog does not work for me in Need For Speed: High Stakes nor in Hitman: Codename 47.

The Radeon works perfectly well for 1000s of people. Once in a while someone can't get something to work, and they tend to be the most vocal, but most people have NO problems. Fog works great here.

Re:The Retail 64 ddr is clocked at 183/183. Every other radeon is clocked at 166/166. This includes the OEM 64 ddr and all the 32 meg versions.

Edit: I would recommend the radeon unless you use 16 bit color or use win2k.

Re:im not 100% sure, but im 99% sure I read in Anandtech's review that the OEM version comes with slower DDR ram installed, and a slower memory clock, thus slowing the performance of the card

Re:Be careful, I have heard that the OEM versions on the radeon are not the same as the retail. I do not remember exactly what it was, but I believe that it was mentioned in the anandtech budget card round-up or whatever it's called. Could be wrong tho…….

Best Answer: I don't think it is possible because both of these computers have VGA OUTPUT. You need a laptop with a VGA OUTPUT and the other computer has to have a VGA INPUT.

haha no problem. from past experince on here I know a lot of people are high on opinons and low on helpful information. I understand them being helpfull (not talkin about people directly in this thread) But without much thought I came to the conclusion you already knew you could delete or better organize your icons.

Re:COuld add an auto hiding tool bar to either side of the screen, have it to expand a folder with all your frequently used programs in etc etc, I use this with four autohide taskbars all around my main monitor, and have no dekstop icons at all.

I have a desktop taskbar , a taskbar with My Computer expanded and the desktop on again, a taskbar with all my frequently accessed fodlers/programs, and a quick launch one (that rarely gets used really)

But yeh, that would give you the effect of having more desktop space, off to one side. I like the multi toolbar approach, but don't see many people use it, dno why…

Thats what I do……….

Agreed. I have a folder called 'Utilities' in which I put little system related programs. I also have a folder called 'files to be relocated' in which I put everything I drag into my desktop (all of my downloads go to my desktop; I organize them latter).

Also, I use Objectdock as a launcher for the 10 apps I use the most.

As a result I usually have only 8 icons in my desktop (one for each of my 5 disk partitions, My Documents, My PC, My utilities folder and a shorcut to my DVD-ROM)

Re:you can run virtual desktops, aston.com makes a proggy that does it (alt-desktop) you can have 4. Each can have it's totally own icons and all that jazz. Doesn't sound exactly like what you want, but it does the job. Also nice when you want different programs opened and want each on it's own desktop

Q: I can not find what is wrong with my computer will boot fine, but sometimes it will just freeze and lock up and sometimes the screen will just go blank. I kinda supect the video card, but Im not sure. I would appriciate some knowledge on this point. Thank you.

Re:I think it was a bad stick of ram becase it seems to be working without one of the 3 sticks. Although when I boot the computer and it does the memory test the numbers go from 0 to 512 (which is how much memory i have) and then it goes back to 0 and loops forever unless i have it skip the test. Could that mean that more of the memory could be bad or that there is a problem somewhere?

Bad ram or a bad processor will do these things also, as well as a toasted card. Time to start switching out components one at a time, and hopefully you know someone who has a few spares to help.
I would clear cmos first, and try it.
remove all cards but video and try it.
remove IDE and floppy connections and try it.
then pull video card and put any old PCI or agp vidcard in and try it.
A completely different stick of ram and try it.
Different Power supply and try it.

Those fail, it is either a totally borked BIOS, Mobo, or processor.
If you can find another free processor for testing, try that. No joy, then the board and/or bios is bad.

Can't boot up to BIOS? you have a serious issue … is your video card plugged in? … if not then you won't be able to see anything … leave everything plugged in and do what i told you earlier to get to the BIOS

Re:It's either F1, F2, F8, or Delete to enter the BIOS … seems like your hard drive got corrupted … u need to set the startup in BIOS to boot from CD … then put your Windows XP CD in to reformat and install Windows again …. first i would check all your wireing, including if the Memory is put in corrrectly

Re:Seems like one messed up PC to me … it could be a virus, spyware, driver, bios, hardware, or a combination of any of these … I wouldn't even bother fixing it manually even thou you could … i'll just reformat the whole machine … follow these steps and you should be fine (unless it's hardware incompatibility issue)

1) Backup everything that is important to you
2) Update Your BIOS (check your settings afterwards)
3) Reformat and install your OS
4) Install all drivers especially Chipset and Video
5) Goto Windows Update and install necessary fixes, drivers, and critical updates
6) Install must have software : Antivirus (Norton), Ad-aware and Spybot (both are spyware remover make sure you update them)
7) Defragment your PC monthly

Be very careful updateing your BIOS … these steps are for advance users …

Also when my computer freezes or the video goes it is when i am browsing the internet or somtimes with other prorgrams and games. When it does freeze or lose the video the fans stay on though. Right now I am having a hard time even getting it to boot up (the screen stays blank and there are now beeps from the computer starting up). Hope this helps. Thanks

Re:Welcome and please give the info guy asked for if you want help. Also, is it doing these things during boot up, just idling in Windows, when playing games, etc? It could be any number of things from virus, Windows problems, video card, PSU, etc.

I would bump down the processor to a 3800+ or something
Skip the raptors or just put one in (RAID doesn't seem to get you a whole lot with raptors if I remember correctly)
Tone down the PSU to something more budget-y
Tone down the case
Possibly keep the X-Fi if you have enough money left over to add a sound system that deserves to have one attached.
The rest into the sound system to justify the x-fi.

Q: Windows is not even installed. Every fan works in the shop, including the video card, but I can not get anything to appear on the monitor. There seems to be no signal to the monitor, but visually I see nothing wrong. There is an LED on the motherboard that works fine, including the motherboard works, the fans and everything built into the mobo work, and I built the whole thing with one hand remaining on the ground myself with the inside of the enclosure the computer on a tile floor 0.

Using an Asus A8N-E motherboard with a Sonata II case, and a 1600 Pro video card.

Best Answer: for the sound there should be about 2 wires attached together coming off the power supply. and are you sure the monitor works and has power?

The four-pin section of your main power connector (pic (http://www.mechbgon.com/build/ATX20PWRS.jpg)) is not an ATX12V cable, it's got different voltages and may fry your motherboard if you stick it where it don't belong

So look again at your Sonata II's PSU wiring, the ATX12V plug is there somewhere. It goes in the receptacle at the upper-left corner of the motherboard, above the CPU socket.
