Re:If that doesn't work. do a search for user.da* and system.da*. I made the mistake of tweeking something I shouldn't have in the registry and had to restore. user.dat and system.dat are the two files that your registry is composed of. older versions are marked user.da0, user.da1, …same with system.dat. Rename one of the .da# for both the user.dat and the system.dat. I'm not sure if this will work for 98, but it did for 95.

Q: I have Windows 2000 Pro, I welcome the many PCs from me and every time I boot I get the message that IE cannot go online. It gives me two options and try again Stay Offline. I press try again and I will go online on my homepage. But I do not know why it happens everytime. I am a Lynksis Router 4Port Hub and all my other PCs connected to this hub and have no problems (using Win 1998, XP, ME), but 2000 is much problem.
Anyone know what can cause this? 977 503 (this is set to automatically detect IP, and everything)

Re:Weird proxy settings can make this happen. You might want to disable auto proxy detection, unless you need it for some other reason, and see if that changes things. You might also double-check Tools->Internet Options->Connections->(choose your connection settings) to see if anything's amiss.

It usually has to do with not having a connection the first time i launch the browser…then it seems like every subsequebt time (even with a connection) IE is convinced it needs me to point it to one.

Re:Eh, if he can play all regular DVD's, then he HAS to have a DVD drive. A DVD drive loos exactly the same as a CDROM. It will probably say DVD on the front. Otherwise, if you can put a DVD disk in the drive, and the drive reads it, then it is a DVD drive. Just make sure that you are using a DVD disk and not some divx CD.

Re:It has to be a DVD-cdrom. Probably has DVD on the front. A regular cdrom will not play DVD movies, the technology (laser, and storage) is different. A DVD cdrom can work as a regular cdrom but a regular cdrom cannot work as a DVD player.

now after having run all the spyware stuff and AV stuff IN Safe mode, i can open My Computer and control panel and such.

the issue here is NOT that win98 is buggy. besides, it's NOT my machine. so comments regarding win 98 are not to very helpful.

Re:I forget which virus it was, but last fall there was one that changed file associations. Whatever was associated to start executable files was changed to some .vxd. Because it changed the associations, I couldn't even run regedit, or go into view>file types to change them back. I believe I downloaded Stinger virus cleaner and ran it from a floppy. This removed the virus. I then had to reinstall 98 over the top of itself to fix the associations.

I see all the computers in the workgroup, but when I try to access them I get prompted for a username / PW. the computers are using NTFS, and all are win2000pro. I'm sorry, I was not clear with this. The user of the computer should have a username and password to log into windows networking.
This will allow access to the shared resources on each win2k machine, providing you have put in a user in each machine.

Links posted = active links that are in the posts. I cannot even open the links that I post from that machine. But they work from other machines.
I am using IE5.
I can copy – paste for the links so I can get to them but it is a pain.
Also I made a mistake in my first post I said win 95 and it should be 98 version 1 sorry about that.

Re:I have 4 machines here all networked. All useing 98 ver1 except one machine has 98 se. so 3 machines have the same internet explorer on them, only one machine a ver 1 machine has this problem. Reboot does not have any effect. I suspected that it had something to do with a security setting somewhere but if it is I cannot find it. I have not added any programs or altered any setting on the problem machine it just decided to screw up. This machine has a large hard drive on it and I like to use it as my browsing machine for downloads and such.

Q: Sorry to all difficult, but I am currently running Win 98. I play many games, and use office2k occasionally. I want more stability and performance, as I occasionally get problems with hardware (not the system ones just crash some performance issues). Anyway, it would be worth upgrading to Windows 2000? Win ME Win 98 just seems to call, and I do not know much about winning XP.

Would I still be able to get my games and programs to run? I ask this because 2K is NT5 win cos I do not think I will be to.

Best Answer: To start programming I would suggest using C++, it is the earlier form of C which influenced C#. It is also good to start on because a lot of knowledge can be transferred from your C++ programming to C#.

Many companies, such as game companies use C++ and C# to program with and it is widely accepted as one of the best programs for programming.

It is very easy to learn, i am fluent in Borland Delphi programming and i started learning C++ via an excellent array of youtube videos. I am still learning C languages, both ++ and # using only youtube and some beginner worksheets i got from my college teacher.

As for linux, i am not familiar with the linux operating stsyem so would not be best commenting on it, but i have heard that it is excellent as you can make your own programs and whatnot in it, it is also free to download and is user updated.

Yes, you can network with 9x machines (much like you can network with any machine that speaks the same language). One problem may be (and I do not know the answer) that 9x machines may not be able to read NTFS formatted shares. And the internet connection sharing present in win2k is the same (or an updated version) as the ics in win9x.

I believe you can upgrade, but the best thing to do is format. With a format you make sure you get rid of all the win9x crap that may be left behind after an upgrade. If all you can afford is the upgrade version though it shouldnt be too much of a problem

1. win2k is reportedly MUCH more stable than 9x
2. Most recent games will work with 2k, although some require the download of a patch

EDIT: and for future refrence, NTFS is better than FAT32 in almost every way.

Q: At work, I do not have Fast User Switching, so ctrl-alt-del gives instantly NT 6 options of which one is the task manager. This menu displays immediately, even when the system is loaded with something, like win task manager 98.
Hitting waiting for freight that takes a while if there is a problem or a program that uses 100% CPU load and usually only after the busy schedule working.

I stoppedm looking for a way to load task manager as fast as the main options if possible. Perhaps there is a way to replace what is or give the same priority task manager or whatever makes the options screen tax instantly.

The ccsvchst.exe file is automatically added to your computer upon installing the Norton software, and it is referred to as the Symantec Service Framework. The ccsvchst.exe file works to display the GUI (Graphical User Interface) of Norton products, which usually include the Norton Security Suites.

The ccapp.exe process is a core component of Norton Antivirus. It runs in the background continuously checking your system for viruses and trojans, it also checks any inbound email for similar threats. If this process is stopped Norton antivirus will not be able to protect your computer.

Lastly … regsvr32.exe process is used to register ActiveX (OCX) and Dll files with your operating system.
regsvr32.exe is flagged as a system process and does not appear to be a security risk. However, removing RegSvr32 may adversly impact your system.
The Process Server database currently registers regsvr32.exe to Microsoft.This is part of Microsoft Windows.

Generally this happens when I try deleting a file that is in use or can't browse the network or have some program running at 100% CPU, is there any new way to maybe limit the explorer 100% timeout to maybe only 1 second so if it can't access a file or network it will only wait a second to stop, or is there any way to stop it other then killing it?

Winlogon responds quickly to ctrl-alt-del due to security architecture. Taskmgr isn't essential to system security. If you choose task manager it will launch it like any other app. If your system is bogged down by a misbehaving application it's going to be slow. Fix your system

Some workarounds:

Hit Ctrl-Shift-Esc instead of ctrl-alt-del.
batch/script/run the taskmgr.exe program with the start command, setting an above normal priority.

Re:because I have no manual and am not sure what mother board it is and what chips they are and what videocard it is, oir what model e-machine ( I looked and so far have not found the answers). it is a pentium 4 1.4 Ghz e-machine I bought for 15 bux because the computer was in a fire and was not starting at all I found another power supply and now I have itworking but am not sure if it is fire damaged or corrupted OS or bad hard drive, the cd rom is not working nor is the floppy they report no disk in the drive, and I am entering a win98 OS on the 2nd partition of the hard drive to install win 98, because I cannot install it from a cd for now ( both CD and floppy havd drivers ) I need to boot from i the hard drive and then will do the settupexe win98, in in windows. If it asks me for a cd I am sunk unless I can over ride it.
Now you know the full story LOl. I did back with Norton Ghost in case I cannot be successfull I can re install what I have now in my other cimputer. windows ME does boot up but soon after freezes up any LAN transfers, and browser has errors then all windows freez and I can reboot with a reset only.
A long story full of things to do. and it began by hopes of installing win 98 and stealing the drivers from the old satup backup.

Change your Primary Network Login to 'Windows Login'. If you don't have that, try Microsoft Family Logon. You may have to click OK to use a blank password on the next reboot.

I have a similar powered laptop — 400mhz 96ram, but Windows 2000 performance is acceptable.

ps I tried, XP, 2000, and ME, but performance got hit badly and ME just crashed all the time. 98SE seems to be happy on this laptop, it's a 2100CDT

There's no such thing as a guest account under Windows 98.

If you want anything even remotely resembling security on your system, Win98 will not get you there.
