Best Answer:

If you would like a high power one for the price, I would recommend the Toshiba M305D-S4829 from Circuit City this week. I haven't tested Crysis yet, but… I just purchased it on Wednesday, and am typing on it right now. It has a ton of power, like seriously. I was playing BF2142 last night with no problems. It costs $699, but It'll be running strong for a few years before anything begins to become too demanding for it. The sound quality on this laptop is phenominal. It has Harman/Kardon speakers that are Bose quality. It has 4GB of RAM, an ATI Radeon 3100 processor, which is nearly equal to most mid-range dedicated graphics processors. It support 802.11b/g/n networks. It has a standard webcam (not to mention facial recgognition software for extra secured log-ons) and all the other features you need lol. The style on this laptop is phenomenal.

If that is slightly out of your price range though, I would say go to Best Buy and pick up the HP DV5-1002NR. It costs $599, but it is nearly as good as the above laptop with only a few exceptions (it is actually better in some areas as well, lol). The touchpad on it has a glossy feel which is fine for cooler weather, but if its humid out or your fingers are the least bit sweaty, it becomes quite difficult to move the pointer. It has a slightly better video processor – the ATI Radeon 3200 (the main difference is that it has a HDMI output). It has a slightly larger screen at 15.4" WS. Its half a pound heavier, which isn't really a big deal to me at all. It also runs the 32-bit OS of Vista which will only support 3 GB of RAM, which is fine for nearly everything.I hope this helps you in your quest!

If you have any more questions, feel free to contact me!

Xp Repair Pro 4.0 – New Software / Now 75% Commission
Re:I would say that games are working just fine in win2k. The only reason that I keep my 98se box is to play my older games without the NT kernel coding. Most big games are coded and optimized to work in both. If you are playing current games, I would say an upgrade to win2k is fine…

Gems 3d Puzzle Game.
Re:Well, my experince with 2k was EXCELLENT

But i didnt try a whole bunch of different games though

I played Max Payne, quake 3, Unreal Tournament, and several others including demos

With the exception of a few demos(which can be buggy anyway) Win2k is the BEST OS i've used for gaming

I got the EXACT same frame rate in games with 2k that i did in 98se SOMETIMES FASTER

maps loaded faster on some games due to win2k's better memory compiler

Now if you are wanting to play a whole bunch of older different games that may have only been designed for 98 or lower then you should stick with that OS

Right now i'm running XP and its almost as nice as 2k but i've found a few quirks i dont like so i will probably go back

I could run windows 2k for over a week without rebooting and without losing any speed

You can also download a "compatibility mode" application from MS for win2k that u can run any program in a mode compatible for an older OS

this feature is included in XP but you can add it to windows 2000

Go with 2k, you'll be glad you did

I have run 2000Pro on 128meg machines . If you are doing light duty stuff(no multitasking), it will run reasonably well. If it starts swapping to disk, it drags down badly.

Hard drive speed has alot to do with it as well. An older slower hdd will make the boot time intolerably long.

Re:I've installed and ran W2k Pro on 486DX2/66 with 32Mb RAM. Even thought installation took about 24h and boot-up about half an hour, it somewhat run. I had plan to try it run on even lower hardware (like 486SX/25Mhz without "turbo" mode, should give ~10Mhz processor) but never had time for that. I doubt W2k will run well on P166 even if it has enough RAM. I'd suggest Win95 OSR2 for that kind of system (that is if you need MS Windows at all).

-Spy
For me, MS Word still loads too slow on my zippy Athlon XP with 512MB of RAM, but my parents wouldn't know the difference between 2GHz of Athlon XP power and a 166MHz Pentium. An interesting observation I have made about Win2k is that on equivalent hardware, Windows 98 may appear to be slightly faster while single tasking at a few small things, but Windows 2000 will "feel" very "smooth" (it's hard to understand unless you've experienced it), and will keep running reasonably well even under a large multitasking load.

I already lost a Floppy Driver for this new system, what else?

Thanks for the details on the nVidia 2.03 driver. The only reason that I am usint it is that I do not have to update the nVidia Audio Codec Interface with the Realtek driver. I had to do this with the ASUS 1.6 driver because of bad sound distortion in DVD playback with the ASUS 1.6 driver.

Can the nVidea 2.03 driver be updated to the ASUS 1.6 driver, or would it be best up do another fresh install of Windows?
______________________________

I was talking to a friend and he mentioned having the same kind of problem with a CD writer and found that if there was a CD in it, Windows would not recognize it. If he took the CD out it would see it just fine. I have now done 6 Warm Restarts (3 ea. w/ and wo a cd) and 6 Cold Boots (3 ea. w/ and wo a cd), and all 6 times with a CD the drive was not recognised in Windows, while all 6 times without a CD, the drive was recognised in Windows.

I do not have this problem with the SONY CD/DVD writer at all. This must be an issue between the firmware of the drive, the mobo driver, and possibly the BIOS.

Any comments on this?

Yes, in fact it got to the point, on an older install of Windows, that if I would unplug the cable then plug it in again, the drive would be recognised.

I then tried the cable for another drive, but got the same result.

It just seems that this drive is flaky, but I have never had one come in and out like this, they would either work or not work.

Best Answer: You wrote, "We have the licence [sic] certificate with all the licence [sic] numbers on there…"

Any old Windows 2000 CD will not work. If your license is from an OEM version of Windows 2000, you'll need an OEM Win2000 CD.

If your license is from a retail version, then you'll need a retail Win2000 CD.

You did not specify the make of your laptop, but I'm aware that Dell systems have the license code sticker on them. Those are OEM key codes so pretty much any Dell system restore Win2000 CD will work.

Retail key code = Retail CD
OEM key code = OEM CD

Good luck!
For instance, remnants of files can still exist after doing a restore, etc… The bext bet is to get a touch button external hardrive backup system, which can be had pretty reasonably priced. Much better experiences with backups than system restore.

If it is any consolation… I had less problems overall with Win2000 Pro than any other OS including XP!!! It is extremely stable. Good luck with everything!

The idea here is that with the pagefile disabled, two things happen:

1) when the drive gets defragged, it won't have to work around the pagefile
2) one the drive has been defragged, and the page file reenabled, the page file can then be almost guaranteed to be one continuous block of drive, and unfragmented.

here (http://www.windowsdevcenter.com/pub/a/windows/2004/11/23/defrag_pagefile.html) is a good link with a bit more info.

Note that I have personally never, ever used this trick, nor do I see how it would actually help anything speed-wise realistically. IMHO, it's a lot of pain for not much gain. So, I'm just explaining why. My personal view is that it's not worth the trouble.

When you defrag your drive, defragmenter (unless you are using diskeeper ) won't defraf pagefile and MFT. so if you disable virtual memoery and restart the system, windows will delete pagfile. after you defrag it, you can enable virtual memory and windows will make a brand new pagefile with no defragmentation. It works like a charm with Windows XP. apparently not so with windows 2000
