Winamp Question – I can not hear you play but CDs? [windows media player] [player cd]

Q: When can I use Winamp to listen to my MP3s etc, but in a CD and it will automatically play using Winamp, but no sound?

When I try using Windows Media Player / CD player etc it is fine?

What gives?

Re:I had this similar problem before. I found the thing that was a problem. You have to go the preference for winamp and for input plugin, select the CD in plugin. It worked for me. Good luck to you all.

go here (http://www.soundblaster.com/drivers/) and get the latest driver – I'm using Win ME not that that should make any difference really for Winamp.

All the cards are basically the same – it's only the software that varies.
My card is the SBLive "Digital Entertainment" – basically no frills with digital output built in

The file is an "auto-update" type – very easy to install (famous last words – hehe) hopefully it will be the same for you.

Q: When I try to play a DVD in Windows Media Player I get an error message saying Windows Media Player can not play the DVD. Try lowering your resolution and color. I tried 800 * 600 16bit, but it doesnt work.

Best Answer: The previously mentioned codecs may help you view DVDs, but nothing will work better than an upgrade to Windows Media Player 10, which plays DVDs just fine.

This is most likely the answer already. If you had any other DVD program installed, you'd use it. You probably saw that WMP can play DVDs, but it does not come with a decoder, because Microsoft would have to license that. Well, they don't, and so you still have to install a decoder.

Re:Under your network buffering setting(performance tab), where it says, 'buffer this amount of media before playback'. Do you have it set to something like 1/2 hour? You could try using automatic buffering, but that never works for me. Quicktime always buffers the right amount though.:|

As someone correctly pointed out above, it goes away if you select a different music/movie store.

Re:I really wish they would make it so there is better id3 tag editing. I want to have every single mp3 i have to not have a genre in the id3 tag and its just too tedious to go into every single directory. Even though I've ripped all my mp3's from my own collection wmp10 still shows a genre?

Re:Did they get rid of ratings? I would rate all my favorites 4 or 5 stars, and then it would auto generate a playlist based on my favorite music. Or it could make one of songs I hadn't listened to for a while, etc.

Edit: Nevermind, they hid it, and I found it.

Edit Again: I found the playlists, but I still don't see how to rate music.

Yes, your ears will tell you that. There are also formats better than wma (but which wmp doesn't support).

I`ve just installed WMP10 and its a lot better then WMP9 IMHO,interface looks nicer,just did a registry defrag since there was lots of old microsoft files left behind after the upgrade,no problems so far .

Q: Mom calls me occasionally – we gave her a Dell for her 80th birthday and I am her technical support, as Dell does not offer tech support (long story) 0.

She called this morning to say that for some time now every time they start, Windows Media Player is there, the entire screen. She closes her and goes, but next time she starts the computer, there it is again.

I walked her through checking the msconfig startup menu, but nothing there.

Any other place that bad guys can set to start?

I could not find any option in WMP autostart.

I suspect that they have a automatic Windows updates, and downloaded it for her, including a version update, and is set to pop up in her face. But there is limits to how much I can get her to walk through with me on the phone, and when I started to try to discover that, she got confused.

Re:As for UltraVNC, I'm also behind a router and guy, so it would get really complicated. And I know she would be almost unable except for a believable death threat, to do what would be needed to get it to work. She's a trouper, but reaches limits of what she can handle.

Re:I tried setting WMP as a Scehduled task on my own laptop here (also XP) and set it to system startup. It started (Task Manager shows it) but without a window. So I doubt that is the thing, but I'm still curious about Norton AV.

Re:Well, here's possibly a clue. I got a suggestion elsewhere that it could be a Scheduled Task – I didn't think of that. And Scheduled Task reminded me that she told me that when this started just recently, she mentioned that at the same time she noticed that the regular weekly Norton Antivirus scan that is scheduled for overnight every Friday night has stopped working. She is used to seeing the popup screen from Norton every Saturday morning and she hasn't seen it since the WMP thing started. I didn't think of connecting the two since they didn't sound related. But maybe there is some way they are. It's too late to call her again tonight. Anyone see any way this could be a clue?

You mean those special Dell keys up at the top, for email or internet or maybe a media player? How could it be stuck, though, if it only happens at boot? Very interesting idea, though. Wouldn't think of that one in a week!

Re:I'll bet a beer the problem is with the keyboard, a special media key that opens the default media player, is either stuck or accidently being pressed (like if the keyboard slides below the desk).

Anyways, is WMP loading any actual media? If so, that might be a hint… and you might want to try Add/Remove.

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

See if there's any reference to WMP files, etc over there. If so, disable them or turn them to manual start.

Some of these services don't show up in msconfig.

See if that solves the problem.

Re:well thats interesting. We have just discovered ultravnc as an alternative to pcAnywhere at work. Maybe it too has a reverse connection. I can look at tightvnc.

But really, Mom is a good egg, but gets flustered with things much simpler than that. To have her download, install, configure, all over the phone, seems almost impossible.

Sigh . . .

It's gotta be something tied into the OS, right? What else can do auto startups at boot? And the registry and Startup Menu are all that I know of.

The name of the target viewer machine and optional display number can be entered in the dialog. Connections created this way are treated as shared. Such so called "reverse connections" can also be initiated from the command line using the -connect option.

So she might be able to open the connecction to you so you can help her.

Re:Dell support was a disaster when we really needed it. We had even bought the in-house contract. Never again.

Her ip is 192.168.1.100, so she's on an internal network at the place she lives, and I can't even consider VNC setup, I'm afraid. I could probably make it work with a tech guy at her end, but no luck there.

msconfig at a command prompt gets you the System Configuration Utility, which has a Startup tab, where it shows registry entries for Current Version\Run and Startup Menu items

She should be calling Dell tech support, or you should have VNC or something similar on her machine so that you could connect to it and fix it yourself.

I did a search in my own XP registry here (I don't want to walk Mom through her registry over the phone – the time I got her to do ipconfig was very interesting) and found lots of instances of wmplayer.exe, and I found a website the gave the clsID for it and found all of those in the registry, but nothing about autostarts yet

Q: Okay, I have this little thing on my front panel laptop that can play CDs and MP3s and stuff like that but I have to assign it to a program.

I used to have with the media player from Toshiba, but this player has problems with some high bitrate files for one reason or another so I try to get it to work with Windows Media Player and the faceplate thing opens it without any problems at all but it is not “auto-start” as the Toshiba player.

So I was wondering if I can just open Windows Media Player and just start playing from my MP3 list automatically. Is this possible?

And if it is not possible with Windows Media Player, you can do with Winamp? Cuz thats my next player to try.

I CAN switch which program is associated with my front little play button, HoWeVeR, some programs, such as WMP, will not automatically play when I press the play button because it doesn't "auto-play" like the Toshiba Media Player does. It doesn't start a song without clicking on a song first. If I can get it to start a song without having to press any secondary button, that would be great. The Toshiba Media Player has trouble with some of my 320 kbps MP3's so I tried WMP and discovered that it doesn't auto-play like I want it to. Is there any way I can get it to auto-play? And if so, how? And if not, does WINAMP have the ability to auto-play? Because surprisingly enough, I don't have WINAMP right now, and don't want to download it if it cannot play after simply double clicking the WINAMP ICON (or pressing the play button on the front of my laptop).

Q: Im already accustomed to using Windows Media Player 6.4, and when I upgrade to WinXP, the new Windows Media Player 7 really bothers me. The slow, even though my system is a P4 2GHz 256 MB of RDRAM. So I downloaded WMP 6.4 and did an install of Windows 95 compatibility mode is selected, and it seems not to install . It always comes up with the error “Error loading W95inf32.dll” . Is there a way I can force the installation of WMP 6.4 system? I know 6.4 works because Ive already installed, and now suddenly there is this error when I tried to do a reinstallation .

Windows Explorer crashes each time video is 'looked' [windows media player] [video file]

Q: Everytime I go to the folder where all the movies that I entered on my PC contains Windows Explorer crashes. To open the files without a crash WE to open it using Windows Media Player (file open). I know the specific files, because I managed to drag the videos to another folder (with my awesome ability to click fast) before the error appears.
Any ideas are appreciated!

Best Answer: Try if following method works.
Disable Windows XP's Media and Video Thumbnail Preview.

Goto, "Start" -> "Run" or press +

In the Run box, type(without quotes) following,

"regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll" and press

To enable it, repeat the above.

Re:Same problem here a while ago. Look in your event viewer, and it might say what file is causing the error. When it happened to me, the file was listed. Traced it back to a ULead DVD program. Uninstalled the program, and all was well.
