Does WinME have problems addressing 1GB ram? [msi kt3] [winme]

Q: I just added another stick of 512MB PC2100 MSI KT3 to my older rig (1GB total now) and it booted to WinXP impeccable. Ran a few apps and everything seems fine. Then I fire on WinME and it freezes. Is it or is it just my WinME system?

Re:Thanx guys for the help, I followed the AT faq and Windows ME is running fine now. Only reason why I have it loaded on this rig is for Starcraft/Broodwar/Warcraft II. These older games seem to have problems joining and hosting games on battle.net with Windows XP, but with Windows ME it works fine, go figure.

Re:Yes it does. According to the Microsoft Knowledge Base about freezing and BSOD's at startup with Windows 98 or ME:

CAUSE
Windows Me and Windows 98 are not designed to handle 1 GB or more of RAM. 1 GB or more of RAM can lead to potential system instability.

RESOLUTION
To work around this problem, reduce the amount of memory that is installed in your computer to 512 megabytes (MB) or less.

Question about Win2k and IRQs . [msconfig] [winme]

Q: Ok guys first off . this is my first time with win2k and IM use to just typing u0026quot; u0026quot; Msconfig pop the window and disabling the programs I want, so they dont start up right away to start . how do I do that in win2k? All utilities there? How to manually IRQs in win2k, WinME, Win98 etc set? Thanks guys!

Re:Actually mine is running with all PCI devices on IRQ-11 right now. I didn't even notice until I read your post.

On previous installs on this system, all devices shared IRQ-9.

I have my system (Win 2k SP1 – MSI KT7 Turbo, Duron 850) all devices on IRQ 11 and everything seems to be working OK. Did you guys read somewhere that it is suppossed to be 9 or is just any of the available IRQs??

While you can copy over MSCONFIG.EXE for limited functionality, StartUp Control Panel (http://mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) from Mike Lin is far more flexible and full featured, and works perfectly under Win2K.

Re:with ACPI enabled, all devices will share IRQ 9, leave it like this if you don't have any problems, that's how win2k works. I use msconfig in win2k, you just need to copy the file from win98 to the winnt/system32 folder. gives a few errors when you start it, but works fine.

Under w2k, are you trying to change some IRQs off of #9?? If so, and you're not actually having any problems then don't!! It is supposed to be like this.

Q: I upgraded from an older Compaq laptop from WinME to Win2K. Now, after tearing my hair out all day, I decided that the POS modem is Win2K compatible. So, I have to “uninstall” and go back to WinME Win2K. How do I do that without losing any boy music, etc. on the hard drive?

The disk is formatted w/FAT32. Can I use a WinMe boot disk and install from DOS to lose his stuff? ——————————————-

Re:Do you have a cd burner? If so then your situation isn't so bleek after all. I am going to assume (ya i know) that pretty much the only thing you need to REALY back up are the programs you have installed right. If that is indeed the case then just start copying all the data in the program files folder to cd's. After this format the drive and reisntall ME. Once ME is installed copy all the program files back into the program files folder in ME just like it was before. Everything should work fine. Then there is the easy way out, just buy a modem that is compatible with 2000. That is the road I would take but thats just me

PS: There are going to be some things that do not need to be copied from the program files folder. Programs that are win2000 specific which should be obvious.

Missed your update post If parition magic is still the same as it was a little over a year ago then DO NOT UNINSTALL IT after having used it to add and remove partitions. It turns your dos partitions into non dos and if you uninstall partition magic windows will no longer be able to boot. Some people say that ME doesn't use dos and there for doesn't need to be installed on a dos partition but this is bull. Agin this used to be a problem with partition magic and the folks that designed it may have fixed this by now. Look into it though to be safe.

Re:Thought I'd report in on the final results.

I deleted as many programs as I could to free up space and then used PartitionMagic to create a second partition. After moving all the files (MP3's, word docs and spreadsheets) to the "D" drive I booted into DOS and formatted the "C" drive. I decided to install Win98SE but the results weren't pretty. Too many drivers weren't available, so, rather than waste more time, I reformatted the partition and installed WinME.

I'm no WinMe fan but I must say it got everything right the first time. At this point I have moved all the files back to the "C" partition and deleted "D" by merging it into "C." I have a few more programs to install and I'll be done.

" if you do a win reinstall . (especially from win2k to Me or 98)

and, i strongly suggest that you do not install Me but win98 SE instead

if yes, just move all ur stuff to the second partition and just format the patition that ur OS is installed.

if u doesn't hav 2 partition……i think u can just delete the C:\windows folder that include all the windows file….and install Win Me again…..this will not affect the other folders.

Q: Anyone else with this problem? I installed WinXP Pro v2600 a while ago [upgraded from WinME] and it is too early end. I would expect this from the HOME version and not PRO.

Re:As far as registration you need to register in 30 days unless you have the corprate edition. But there are also cracks that you can download which I would not try unless it is apsolutely necessary as I heard some are actualy viruses. Another way to find a copy of a file in XP which controls the registration functions. Then you should be able to copy it into place and work normaly. I am not sure of the exact name or were to find it though.

Anybody know how to dissable that password reset function. I believe it basicaly wants to resen the user password every 30 days. It's no big problem as I input the old password anyway but I would like to stop that if possible.

Re:I'm confused, you installed the final version of XP Pro and expect to use it for how long without having to activate it? Microsoft clearly states on their XP website that the grace period for using XP before you must activate it is 30 days.

I'm not a huge fan of the product activation in WinXP, but Microsoft isn't pulling the wool over anyones eyes about it. If you want to run XP, be it Home or Professional, you have to activate your copy within 30 days after installation or it will expire and you will be left with a worthless operating system. If that doesn't suit you then you should go back to ME or find yourself a copy of the corporate version that doesn't require activation.

Q: Folks, I just bought an OEM version of WinXP Home full version from Newegg for a friend in hopes of using it to upgrade his system. Can this be used to upgrade WinME without losing files and / or data, and how can I do? Every time I try to start nothing is shown about upgrading, but loading WinXP. Am I doing something wrong or should I try something that not possible? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks people.;)

Re:I have a version of XP OEM also. It doesn't give me an option to upgrade. I think a fresh install is the better choice because you'll have less problems!

No where does it say anything about upgrading the current system. Did I screw up folks?
