The most efficient method for a 500 ft [cat 5 cable] [lightning damage]

Q: I am looking for two computers on the network several buildings separated by 500 “. I want the cheapest effective method available. Ive been using the wireless” Orinoco “solutions, but Im not sure” line of sight. can be effectively buried? Will I have problems with damage from lightning? Network growth arrestors? Any information you could provide would appreciated.

Thanks.

Re:On a side note, You cannot run Cat5 from one building to another without running into some dangerous grounding issues, since each building has a different grounding point you can fry not only your computer equipment but also yourself!

Re:Thanks for the Link. The longer threads help to diverse up the information pool.

Re:Thanks for the input. The pringles can sounds like a winner. Now if I can find the orinoco cards on the cheap i'm set.

Thanks for the input.

Re:I would say the cheapest way would to get a wireless routers and use the Pringles setup (http://www.oreillynet.com/cs/weblog/view/wlg/448)

Re:Pretty sure you're getting into areas here that might be a little gray in terms of legality. Consider if this was cable TV you wanted to run to your neighbor's house. You couldn't legally do it, and they'd cut your service if they noticed. Same dwelling, you can do anything you want. Past that, you're running lines that need permits, as well as providing service that's only leased to you for that one dwelling.

Re:This "link" will provide high speed internet access to 2 or 3 computers as well as some file sharing.

Re:Would you mind explaining the role this "connection " will play….If it will indure a high load you might want its own switch or server…

Re:Thanks for the heads up. Do you have any equipment recommendations USB VS PCMCIA/PCI solutions?
Are there systems that just connect to the ethernet cable itself wo/the need to connect directly to the computer? It would be more cost effective to run vs coax if the cost of the "device" was the about the same.

Re:>>>I have thought of using the wireless "orinoco" solutions but I do not exactly have line of sight.<<<

It depends on the nature of the obstruction, if it is big buildings in the way it will not work.

Since it is 500? with two directional Antennae in a Window or the roof of your structures, and two good bridges it might work.

However, it will be more expensive then the entry level Gizmos.

Re:In the US at least, it's usually illegal to run wiring from one property to another without a license.

Fiber or wireless are the ONLY choices in this case. Cat5 UTP is only good for 100 meter (a bit over 300 feet) spans if you want a decent connection, and I'm not sure how unreliable it gets past that, but I expect it falls quickly. Depending on where the wiring has to go and how much of the distance is actually outside the buildings, you could put a hub or switch as close to the outside as possible on each side, which could reduce the length between each hub to less than 100 meters.

Re:Your first, best, option (ruling out wireless) is fiber. It's absolutely the method of choice.

UTP is not generally rated for external use. Avaya (formerly Lucent) does make an exterior grade Cat5, and the associated entrance protection (needed at both ends). As far as I've been able to find, Avaya is the only company that is making/selling external-rated cat5 and matched entrance protection for it.

According to the catalog, it is rated for data only (no voice / the entrance protection is not voice-rated, a safety issue).

Since this is a business, you should consult with someone like Anixter or a local cabling contractor that specializes in data cabling. The legal liabilities could be ugly if it's not done properly and to local/state/federal code.

Fiber is the best choice. Wireless would also be a good choice if you could do it. UTP should be an absolute last choice, but there is an option if that's the only way you can do it.

Call a good data cabling company and / or Anixter to get the details.
