Q: I currently have no computer at home. Mine died.
I continue to hear how the Conroe CPU Intel waiting instead of buying something now. Questions:
1.) How much better is this CPU will be the Pentium D 940?
2.) How much difference will there be? How will they start with?
3.) When are they coming out?
If there somethign that I think finally, that he is a much better CPU than the Pentium D 940 (increase in performance, tremendous boost to gaming) then I can probably fight off, and the price is not that big of a difference.
I have some time, not much, my order to cancel. So answers here will weigh heavily on what I do.
I appreciate the help.

Definitely worth the wait even if you don't get it for the price drops on AMD.
Good point…so if anything else, I can just fall back to an AMD gaming system
Might I suggest buying a conroe ready motherboard now (a few are availible or soon to be released) and then buy a pentium D 805. It is a 100 dollar chip that OC's quite well. You could then just replace the 805 with a conroe and get a major performance boost when the conroe is availible. This way you have a decent comp to use now and eventually you can have a badass computer.

The Pentium D and the C2D use the same socket, but not all LGA775 mobos support C2D.
Well, since I really want to build a gaming rig, I decided im going to wait…just have to borrow someones computer…
when is the CPU released?

There are so many threads on this, it's not even funny. Search for conroe or core 2 duo and you will find specifics on price, performance and release date. Long story short – Conroe (Core 2 Duo) will give you much more performance than a P-D 940 at the same price point.
is it a definite that this new CPU will be that much better AND about the same price?
The E6300 will be priced the same as the 940. It'll probably perform much better than the 940, but we've been seeing mostly benches of the versions with 4MB of L2 cache (meaning E6600 and above).
how does this affect motherboard selection? I'm guessing, it is a different socket?
As well as it's affect on memory selection?
