Q: I have my friend brand new laptop to connect to my PC. Both are running Win XP Home laptop SP2.
Her network capable already.
My PC had no network card, so I bought a brand new Ethernet 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet card and the new category 5 RJ45 patch cable.
Installed map worry , XP picked it up and installed drivers etc.
Connected the two together with the icon in systray cable.
Little say: “A network cable is unplugged 0 .
Ummm . I have checked and double checked for proper assembly of Both ends.
Network Connections Local Area Connection 2 shows the same status as above; cable unplugged.
Wossup? Dodgy cable?
Or do I need a laptop, PC or both to configure them to be able to see each other. I was told that this type of network setup was easy as pie, connects the two together and hey presto, XP will do. It appears not.
Best Answer: Use a personal VPN, http://www.surfbouncer.com with static IP address. It will cost you about $20 a month per user, less for longer terms. They can give you a single IP address that you can submit and all your users will have this single IP address.

Re:So you use a crossover cable and plug both ends into the respective ethernet cards, and presto? Is it really that easy?
I am looking to transfer files, not concerned with internet sharing at this point, this is just a temp setup since I had to run data recovery on FAT32 drive in XP NTFS, so I need to port over the data onto a FAT32 drive again, so all will be well.
