Q: OK, I installed advanced server, setting up a domain, and after about one week run at the start button once will not open. when I click, it shows the start button as depressed, but it will not pop up the Windows Start menu. I can access all menus through Explorer, I can use the Windows key + R to run programs, but the menus themselves will not appear on the screen!
it is not a virus, I have symantec corporate 8 with the latest update, and the computer is not even connected to the internet yet . It is setup on LAN, and none of the customers have the start menu issues.
thanks for any help in advance!
Re:ah, ok, sweet. i will try that. i may have it set to a roaming profile right now anyways.. i will try switching it to local and see if that works.
Re:so trash the local domain admin profile (not the network profile, just the local profile)
delete:
\documents and settings\administrator.domain\
-Spy
Re:the profile works fine except for the start button, and it is the domain controller administrator account.
Re:so trash the non-functioning profile
Re:i logged in with another account, and the start button worked perfectly. i compared the services running and they are exactly the same for both (both logins are administrator level.) this is extremely strange and i've never before encountered this. thanks for the help!
Re:no more thoughts just questions.
What happened when you logged on with another account?
Re:ok, thanks for the ideas.
Re:so try logging on with another account and see if it has the same problems, if it doesnt (which I'm guessing it wont) than it's a profile specific problem & since it's a server it should be easy enough to delete the profile.
if the problem occurs under another login than my guess would be that there is another process that is interfering with explorer.exe's functioning. you could try the old "launch folder windows in a seperate process" trick, if that doesnt do it than it would be time to start looking to find out what service is causing the problem.
Re:still not sure what the problem even is bump…
Re:hmm.. i do not know, i have not tried logging on to the domain controller with another admin account. what would it mean if it did, and what would it mean if it did not?
